Damage reduction is vs physical only
Xenrath
What are the pros and cons about this? I'm pretty sure a -2/-2 shield which I paid a huge ingame sum for (took a lot of time to gather at the time) has now essentially become useless it's only used vs melee opponents. Not too pleased about that, but what do people think about this (from both PvP and PvE perspectives) and what are the advantages and disadvantages? Non-warrior responses would be good too, to get the view from those who are usually on the receiving end of the old damage reduction.

why a new thread?
Xenrath
Just felt there were several different issues being discussed in one or two threads and helpful to seperate some parts out - but mods feel free to close if this isn't a good idea

Personally I think this will increase the value of +armor Vs Elements alot more!..
oddly it will also increase the worth of skills which protect Vs Elements, such as ward against elements.
Additionally, IWAY teams are now much more squishy.. that alone is worthy of note

sowwy, my mistake.

PvP: Elemental strings/pommels/grips > Warriors.
PvE: Uhh, yeah, tank against a mixed group that has several types of damage, while the warriors ignore you and bash up the monk and you take the Ele's damage...
From a farming point of view...the mobs that rely solely on Physical damage and don't have a mesmer/necro/ele near usually get nerfed
So, damage reduction sucks now, Knights and Ascalon sets are more useless than ever and a lot of warriors are pissed...

Every team uses warriors so everyone is effected by this.. monks most of all!

imho it was not needed to nerf ALL shields..
just my 2 cents
just my 2 cents

yeah, basically the warrior now has more to fear from casters, and the occasional frenzying wammo with a firey dragon sword.
Knights now is a bit better protection vs phys than most but if you want real protection you're gonna have to go str tank in sent or stance tank in legion. Or take Platemail/dragon/etc.
shield mods have been made a little more useless. Warriors job got a little more difficult

Hmm, this is definitely going to affect my warrior's tanking abilities in areas with lots of elemental enemies. Not sure how this is going to affect warriors in PvP, since warriors aren't usually targeted till last; besides, I prefer wearing Sentinel's armor in PvP anyway.
I do think PvE is going to be affected the most by this change, as well as the price of shields with these types of mods.
I guess warrior Hydra-farming is gonna be dead

Oohh time to start using Lightining (Armour ignore) spells again lol
Dark Dragon
I think it might have a large affect on pvp now ele's may become more than just "blind bots".
Change is good its stops the game becomeing stale with the builds being used by everyone.

It gives eles the buff that they need. Ele was my first and favourite class and now they have more uses than spamming HP and Blinding Flash in GvG. Warriors are now balanced i think.

I think that warriors were indeed balanced. Although I just started my warrior after a period of not having one, I'm not altogether thrilled about it. Where can one find an elemental shield? Do they drop randomly, or do collectors carry them? If they aren't at collectors, then prices on them are gonna rise, and I will just stick to the collector -5(20%) I got last night.
Raxxman
better off grabbing a +7 vs ele hilt as its generic vs all eles.
I'm a little miffed cause warriors really have no counter vs Hex or conditions other than to rely on Monks (and before you argue its a team game, if you're 100% reliant on something then more often than not you're a burden not an asset).
Rangers with ele bow strings are gonna rip apart warriors now, and Hexes still kill em (On another issue, does anyone actually use the Lt. Helm pre nerf? I've found it useless.)
Watch yourself and Doylak are even more vital for pve sustainability vs mobs

Looks like weapons with + Armor vs. Elemental damage are going to be more in demand now. It also looks like that set of Knight's armor I've been lugging around can finally be sent to the recycle bin (Since scrap metal prices are up now - LOL)

The only thing I don't like is them changing the global damage reduction. I heard someone say that this has been a glitch all along, but then my question is: Why didn't they figure out how to fix it a year ago? Why wait all this time to nerf something so big? That is the only problem I have with the update.
Former Ruling
funny story, a guildie of mine was running through kryta I think it was, past some Mergoyles, and he said in guild chat (without having read the update) - "the mergoyles used to hit for 0 all the time, now they are hitting me for 3-4. whats up?"
And it was ofcourse his -dmg mods not kicking in anymore lol.
I don't know that Ele mods will be better now, except on special farm builds that farm ele enemies.

I think this changes the game.
The warrior is not a magical class. It does seem strange he's able to repel fireballs and such with the same shield that can defend against arrows.
This update forces some more critical thinking into your choice of equipment now. No longer is Gladiator/Weapon helm/knights boots the best (and essentially ONLY) choice.
I might invest in a sentinel chestplate when i get my 15k luxon.
The shields feel a little less useful now, maybe we might get new shield mods out of it though??
-2 vs elemental dmg (while in stance)

I can't believe that the DR change will make THAT big a deal in PvP, unless you're down to wanding that last warrior to death with your monks..
It's a BIG change in PvE. Wars will be much more delicate in mid-game and have a much harder time farming elemental critters. I wonder if single mod +10 vs element shields will be valuable now?

Perhaps we will see more hammer warriors but I doubt it. Shields still give 16AL but I want to know what they give if you dont meet the req now? That was part of the update too but since that mainly affects casters switchin to a shield for extra defense no warriors are complaining.
Ya even more armor against physical damage.
Why do you all think this is such a buff to eles? The shields were only a substantial boost in the incidental damage, wands, aoes, etc. High damage attacks lost at most 5 pts of damage and usually only 2. The shield was the only thing to affect this, not the Rune. It was always physical damage to the best of my knowledge.
Great now I get to hear more people scream about scrimmaging cuz my warrior build totally wtfpwns all other warriors....
Does this really make Eles more powerful in any way? I dont think so. But now your Flare does from 0-5 more damage depending on what shield he is NOT using anymore...
*edit*
It wont make a huge difference to pvp warriors. The shield debuff affects those who dont meet the req more. Im pretty sure that the Knights/Ascalon absorbed only physical and the shields whether -2, -2/-2, or -2/-3 were the global "damage" not just physical damage. ie. in Milias example warriors would have -10 absorbtion vs physical damage if in a stance and hexed and -5 vs all other "damage". Lower that by 1 for a -2/-2 shield. Lower it by another 2 if its a -2/+hp shield.

Well, this changes things a bit, change is good (I hope), I know I will still play my Warrior (though my death count may take a spike >.<)

At least now Rangers have the AL vs ele they deserve in comparison to a Warrior.

well...
-5 20% is still against ALL dmg types isn't it? there is no note about anti physical only.
if that's true, the run for -5 shields will raise.

This definately sucks. Not only is my -2 stance, -2 enchanted shield less effective, we also have this:
Its not global anymore, so now having only piece of damage reducing armor isn't nearly as helpful. That will screw with a lot of people's armor.

Yeah, change is fantastic, but you know, it would have been nice if ANet could send out Gaile to tell us of these changes beforehand so people wouldn't waste thousands upon thousands of gold pieces to get now useless pieces of armor.
Thanks so much Arenanet!

There are no pros..just cons.
Damage Reduction will be non-existant in high end pvp, since most players will now wield elemental based weapons to ignore it.
A really idiotic move by ANet.

Wait.... my superior absorbtion now no longer says anything about stacking or being global (don't really remember if it ever did). So, are these localized now? I wouldn't think so, but with the changes to ascalon/knights, I'm not ready to put any bets on it.

As I posted in the update thread, this will make for some interesting choices for warriors when choosing armor.
With the update, all types of warrior armor have a 100AL versus physical and 80AL versus elemental. So, now you have to analyze the difference (I'm only assuming chest and skirt here)...
Gladiator's +5 Energy
Knight's -3 Dmg vs Physical
Platemail +10 Armor vs Elemental
Berserker's +25 Health
Legionnaire's +10 Armor vs Elemental, +10 Armor vs Physical (if in a stance)
Sentinel's +20 Armor vs Elemental (if Strength is 13)
Very interesting choices there.
