Newbie Mesmer needs help!!!
SuperFuzz
Okay guys, I just bought Guild Wars Factions yesterday, I've never played any MMORPG before, and quite frankly, I'm sucking.
I started my quests to go find the Mesmer instructor, had to go free some guy from a hex that made him hungry and have killed a slew of monsters, but I can not for the life of me, anywhere in the entire world, find the Mesmer trainer.
I've completed some quests to recover a chest, clear some Naga out of the water supply etc etc, and now I have no quests, no objectives, no nothing. Still haven't found the Mesmer trainer and have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing now with no quests and no objectives.
Is there anyone out there willing to help a pwnt newb and direct me where the heck to go, or what to do to get some objectives? All the instructors at Shea Jing tell me is to find my instructor, but they've gone missing!! Help!!!

According to www.guildwiki.org (< bookmoark that site, it's a great resource) you need to talk to Mei Ling (the NPC who gave you the Cleanse the Shrine quest) and she will give you the quest Track Down Lo Sha.
SuperFuzz
Thank you very much! Now if I can just remember where the heck Mei Ling was so I can talk to her. I've tried talking to every NPC on the island I think and can't find her. I'm beginning to question if I'm cut out for MMORPG's. Kind of a steep learning curve. Hell, my entire RPG experience up to this point is the KOTOR titles and Fable The Lost Chapters. Not much of a base for jumping into this complicated world!

^^^That's everything about Mei Ling.
Also, you are right about the learning curve thing. Factions has an extremely steep learning curve, and it isn't newbie-friendly at all. I suggest you leave Factions for a time, and try out the first campaign, Prophecies, first. The curve is much smoother on that campaign, and it's alot better for new players. It's also equally fun

Snograt
Hang on in there buddy - sure, Factions has a steep learning curve but it's well worth the effort.
Prophecies was my first online multiplayer romp too, and it's certainly a world away from KotOR and Fable (great though those games were).
I've been playing for 8 months, my favourite character is the Warrior, and I am now at the stage where I'm not-very-good-at-all
Even though I'm rubbish at the game, I love it to pieces - I have an XBox 360 that's been used for about one hour, gathering dust because THIS is the only game worth playing.
For what it's worth, as stated many times in this forum, Prophecies is a much better place to start - it gives you a very good grasp of the basics before it releases you into the harder areas of the game.
By the way; Mesmer? Brave choice! You've picked one of the hardest classes to play efficiently. Most ignorant groups won't pick a Mesmer as there's no indication that they're actually achieving anything. But a Mesmer in the right hands is an awesome weapon. Just ask my mate Sizerdrix
Good luck and good playing.

Unlike other games Guild Wars is very indept on where to go, follow the compass arrows, Press M to view the map, or read the skill log where to go.

Welcome to GW:F! There's a ton of stuff to learn, so don't be afraid to ask questions. As stated, Guildwiki is a great source for info of all kinds.
I primarily play Mesmer, and it's tons of fun. There's lots of good info on these forums about making a good Mesmer build (and all professions, for that matter).
Off topic: Thanks for killing me tonight, Fiery. I wasn't having much fun being stuck in that bridge! (I should have started dancing, tho)

Thanks for the encouragement too folks. It looks like it could be a very interesting and fun game, if I don't get overly frustrated with not knowing what I'm doing before I can start to enjoy it.

God Apprentice
Sounds like you're enjoying GW

The link to guildwiki in the above post includes a map of where to find Mei Ling.

There are a few quests in the game that have indefinite locations, where the quest locator may be confusing or not present, but they're really rare. Everything on Shing Jea Island should have a clear quest indicator, as long as you select the appropriate quest out of your quest log.

BTW, the secondary trainer is Lo Sha, located in Kinya Province. Although, since you refer in your post that you did the quest with the chest, it sounds like you did this secondary quest as well. In which case, you need to talk with Master Togo. After this, you go back to the Monastery and talk with the Headmasters to do the quests for the secondary profession. You don't have to do all of them, but you have to do the ones for the secondary profession that you are going to choose.
Silent Kitty
Either there is a bug, or you mistakenly already did the quest. There is also a chance that you rejected the folow-up quest, once you talked to the master in Shing Jea. Normally there should have been a follow-up quest after talking to the mesmer master in town.
Personally I think you rejected the Quest of Mei Ling (name?), thus you are now on a dead end. You have to talk to her again.

Like Swinging Fists said, it sounds like you've already completed the two early mesmer training quests. You should have a quest telling you to go see Master Togo. Perhaps you already did that, and didn't take any of the quests he offered you. I'd go see Master Togo and see if he has any quests for you.
I recommend that you do all of the secondary profession quests before choosing a secondary since you're new to GW.

Quests become available depending on what you've already done. So I suspect you got to a point where there are no more available quests until you've chosen a secondary profession. Master Togo is in Linnox (?) Courtyard, which you can get to from Shing Jea Monastery. Look for an exit that leads you there.

Thanks all for your help and suggestions! I finally found Togo, chose my second profession (Monk), which I think was a mistake because now I have to stay alive for 2 minutes while getting the crap knocked out of my by two instructors and, well, in 5 tries the longest I've made it is like 46 seconds and I'm beyond frustrated at this point.
I think I'm going to have to face facts and admit I'm not cut out for the MMORPG scene. This game is just way too complex to jump in blind with no prior experience with this type of game. I thought my time with Fable TLC and KOTOR 1&2 might help me, but this is just so much more complex than those and I just feel like I'm flying blind constantly. Kind of like going into advanced trigonometry mid semester when all you have taken before was Algebra 1.

Dude, don't quit! I just passed those quests today with my mesmer, also failed five times before completing it, and I've been playing GW since last April! Just try a different profession, mesmer is the hardest one to be.
Kook~NBK~
Yeah, hang in there! Don't let things overwhelm you. There's tons of people out there that will answer any questions you may have. (My IGN is Ahndia Beppu, feel free to add me to your friends list)
You don't HAVE to do those training quests right away. Going up against 2 level 10's isn't going to be easy. When you've gotten your level up (say around level 15), go back and try them.
You can also try different professions out, make a ranger & see how that goes. Warriors are also a fairly easy class to start out on. If you've got a few extra bucks around, pick up Prophecies - the learning curve is much easier & the overall game isn't quite as complex. (and the Story-line is better, too)

For some classes, those tests are TOUGH. Sometimes I have an easy time of it, sometimes I've died doing those, and I've been playing GW for a while. The session where you have those two guys pounding on you can be really tough for spellcasters.
Yeah, don't quit over this. It has nothing to do with being suited to MMORPGs or not. Good suggestions already. Wait to do the insignia--you don't have to do it right away. Or try another class (though mesmers rock!). And yes, Prophecies has a much slower learning curve, so if you can afford it, you might want to pick it up and start in Tyria instead.

Thanks very much everyone! I wish I could run into you all when I'm in game. Ask for help in there, and you get some 14 year old porn freak trying to hump your leg, (Maybe I shouldn't have created a female character!
) and trying to get anyone to either join your party or let you into their party when you're a level 8 mesmer is I think, literally impossible. Nobody will even acknowledge you exist or even respond to your queries. Go out in the world up against level 14 spellcasters with a level 3 NPC party and your level 8 self, and you promptly get your arse handed to you on a platter. Couple that with the same on these skills tests, and the entire experience is substantially frustrating.
I'm an old school (and old at 37) gamer, that started with Zelda and moved to Duke Nukem and Quake on the PC. I think I've spent too much time playing FPS, TFPS and Third person action games over the years and ruined myself for serious RPG's. Only recently have I gotten bored with those and started looking for something of a more intellectual challenge. I enjoyed KOTOR 1&2 and Fable TLC immensely, but Guild Wars learning curve is a WHOLE lot steeper than those titles. Due to the games complexity and my limited available gaming time with my work schedule, I may have met my match.
I don't have the first clue what to do with all these chitin fragments, shells, scalps, scarves, capes, fabric pieces, plants, minerals, animals, runes etc. I assume one can purchase some dye's or other materials or items, take them to a tailor or armor manufacturer, combine them and have them turned into apparel or armor or weapons or enhance existing items, but I'll be damned if I can find any NPC's that fit that bill. Hell, I found someone to customize my cane early on, and now I can't even find them again. I've ended up just selling everything as a result, and now I have a mess of gold, but haven't found anywhere to purchase a higher level cane or armor or anything. Maybe I just need to find an actual game guide book and fork out the $$$? Has anyone found that to be helpful?

Assuming you bought the game in its box, you should have gotten something called "The Guild Wars Manuscripts" which is just a manual. There's a lot of basic stuff in there that should help you out.
Here's some tips:
- Hold Alt. It'll show you the names of all the NPC's near you. For the most part, they'll all have different names - the important part is the tag after their name. You don't really have to remember where they are, just pan your view around until you find them.
- Big cities have more NPC's than small outposts/towns. For example, Shing Jea Monestary might have a Weaponsmith, while Tsumei Village might not.
- As soon as you can, upgrade your storage by talking to the Xunlai Representative. From then on, you'll be able to store the materials that you find in your storage box.
- Armor can be bought from anybody with the [Armor] tag after their name. They have a big, confusing menu of armor that can be crafted. Basically, a single armor crafter will have one "look," that is, all the armor that he makes will look the same. However, you'll notice that they have a variety of choices in armor types. For example, one set of armor will give you extra energy, another might give extra health or armor. Armor crafting requires gold and materials. You can buy the materials from a vendor, but it's cheaper to save up the materials yourself.
- Since you're new, I'd suggest talking to any Collectors that you see, and looking at what they offer. If you find one that has a weapon/offhand that you want, remember what item they're asking for, and remember not to merchant those. Once you can make the requirement of a max damage weapon (generally 9), save up and buy a cheap green. Green weapons are always perfect, though they have different mods. Luckily for you, mesmer weapons are some of the cheapest out there.

I do have the manuscripts manual and have been looking through it. In fact I picked Mesmer because of the manuscript, just to find they don't seem to be very welcome as party members. Doh!
My biggest problems right now are:
A. I can't find any of the armor manufacturers even using Alt. I'm probably looking in the wrong area. Are there any at the monastery, or do you have to go to another town to find one? and
B. I made it through most of the Mesmer trials, but I can't make it through the monk ones and I think I need some better armor or to level up to make it through.
C. I can't get anyone to join my party because I'm a mesmer and end up doing everything with NPC party members, which are limited to level 3, and don't fare so hot against level 14 NPC baddies.
I've invested a lot of time and effort in my mesmer character (Kasari Ajunta) and have her at level 8 with about half the points needed to level up to 9. I hate to just dump the character and start fresh, but I'm wondering if a different profession might not resolve most of my current frustrations with the game.

Well, you've got 4 character slots. Most people use 3 for PvE characters and leave the 4th open for making PvP characters. Having a hard time getting into groups with a Mesmer is a mixed blessing. The one's that don't want mesmers in their group are generally poor players & their mission sucess rate isn't very good. Hang onto yours, you'll be glad you did.
A great resource for all things GW is guildwiki.com. TONS of good info there about Armors, missions, quests, collectors, etc. Find out what materials you need for the armor you want, and start saving up for it. OR you find the various collectors that trade armor for items, find out what they collect & save those items - cheapest armor in the game, but works just as well!
NEVER BUY ARMOR FROM ANOTHER PLAYER!!!!! (or anything else that says "customized for...")
I've got a lower level Ele sitting in Tsumei Village collecting dust. PM me ingame if you're having trouble, I'll try to give you a hand.

Hey all, my apologies. I just discovered why you couldn't find me in the game. That would be because my fat fingers hit the wrong key when typing my name in here. It's actually Kasari Ajuntu, not Ajunta. Oops! It's fixed now. Sorry to send you on a wild goose chase.
Oh and if someone can suggest a good way through my trial with Brother Pe Wan without getting spanked (again!), I'd be forever indebted!

Sorry you are having such a hard time with this game. My suggestion would be to try and find a guild to join...u can join/quit as many as u want until u find one that is good and has helpful members. Also mesmers rock :P so stick with it. I know what you are going thru since we have similar backgrounds with games..Quake Duke MDK,etc you ever play MuDS? long way from what MMO used to be isnt it..anyways If u ever get prophecies give me a holler and we can team up since I don't have Factions....

Holy crap I finally beat Brother Pe Wan! Thanks very much to Canadian Bacon for some good suggestions that helped. Using his suggestions and much experimentation with moving points and skills around, I finally got past him. Only took a week and about 30 tries.
Here is the combination that finally beat him in case anyone else wants to create a mesmer.
Level 8 Mesmer
Fast Casting = 2
Domination Magic = 7
Inspiration Magic = 1
Smiting Prayers = 1
Shatter Hex - Bane of Signet - Ether Feast - Empathy - Imagined Burden - Ether Feast - Shatter Hex
I had more skills loaded up but didn't end up using them and found that combination worked very well.
Immediately hit him with the shatter hex and then start your character to attacking him constantly. Then quickly hit him with the bane of signet, which knocks him down and gives you a moment of respite. Then go with ether feast so you are recharging while he's attacking you. Then hit him with the empathy so it's hurting him while he's attacking you. By that time the shatter hex will be worn off on him and your attacks won't do any damage, but shatter hex won't be recharged to use yet, so hit him with imagined burden. Doesn't cause him any damage but slows him down a tad. Then do your ether feast as it should be wearing off and immediately hit him with shatter hex again when it's recharged and continue the regular attacks. With in the next few seconds after doing that, he should concede and give you the win.

Grats on getting pen wan down. I have had similar troubles with that part both on monk/mesmer and a ritualist/mesmer I just started.
Damage is truly the way to go, getting his hp's down seems to be more effective than trying to time or wait out your 25 seconds recharge on the shatter enchantment.
Managed to finish with my lvl 7 ritualist today only took me 4 deaths and buying two more domination skills

As far as not being able to get into a group, that'll change as you progress through the game. I found my mesmer to be in demand, especially if you play an interrupter, as I usually do. Mesmers do pretty well with henchies, too.

Thanks for the tips! I still have one more mesmer trial to go, that being to stay alive for 2 minutes while Wang Cha and Jinzo beat on me. I've had about as much success at that one, as I had originally against Brother Pe Wan.
Now that I've figured out that moving points around makes a big difference, I think I'll fair better. I'll let ya'all know how that one goes when I get to try. Right now, I'm off to work my 60 hour work week.
Laters all and thanks much for the help, tips and encouragement!

Thank you all for your help, ideas and encouagement. Thanks in part to your efforts, I've finally beaten all of the Mesmer trials and was granted my "expert mesmer" status. (Why don't I feel very expert?
)
I still have much to learn about the world, crafting items and weapons, what is needed, where to go etc, and of course what it's like to be in a party since all I've been able to use is NPC party members, but I'm starting slowly to get the hang of things.
It's a beginning and we'll see where it takes me!

Don't forget to experiment....gives you some nice builds time to time (but wait untill you know when you are experienced enough ) ( God, I sound like a mother giving her daughter advice about sex )

I'm afraid you're going to have to ellaborate on that one. What is "the experiment"? An optional Mesmer challenge I will run into later that offers new skills or something?
