And before someone states the obvious I know the game is 'Guild Wars'

Are guilds necessary?

Can there be a mature discussion on this? I don't want the flaming of any guilds or peope, I want just a sensible debate ' can u do guild wars without a guild/real people' Or something like that...

All comments welcomed.

And I have enough goats so therefore trolls are not required. Gold and Ectos are

No, guilds are not needed. Guilds give you people to chat to, people who can help you, and GvGs. The only thing you need a guild for is GvG.

Ok, but can't you chat to people in towns/outposts or whoever whispers you/adds you to friends list?

GVG ok point taken but in terms of the game itself? I appreciate some missions are tough and may take a couple of tries... and henchies can be so silly... but? PUG's can be great...and dire and bad but...?

Just really wondering if the whole 'i've got a guild i'm gonna use it' works? Or do solo'ers complete the games/missions just as well?

if u want to enjoy the PvP part of the game: yes, a guild is required. neither GvG nor Tombs is interesting with PUGs.
if u want to complete the storyline: no there is no guild needed. its nice to be in one for the tough missions but im at a point where i have to say: guildies > henchies > pugs in PvE

so far

Thanks Psycho for your pov. See I have never really done GvG, so I admit that is an aspect I can't comment about having never participated. My Guild we helped each other through the PVE then fell apart...I did try to get us into it but failed

So, when I created this thread GVG wasn't really in my mind, but I appreciate that to do GVG you need a Guild...kinda logical if I had my brain switched on...

I played for a long time without a guild, as a "freelancer" or whatever you want to call it. When I finally decided to join a guild, nothing really changed. A few people to talk to in a different section of chat, the occasional person to help you or give help to.

For PVE no - but as leader of my guild and having enough gold (I like farming go figure) to have a full guild hall - I invite people who I meet that I like and aren't into PVG - that just want to "hang" and enjoy a full guild hall (not everyone enjoys farming )

It also acts as a big "friends" (not local) chat and list to find someone who might be willing to help you out when you need a hand.

So short answer (ha!) is that No - for PVE they aren't really needed - but sure are an added bonus.

Tbh..Guilds are what make the game what it is for me. I've been in many guilds, but i've now found a guild that offers everything I look for- a great community + great interactive events I've been a freelancer for 4 months before, it was ok, but when I joined the guild i'm in now everything enhanced alot

Guilds are needed because you can create a private community with them. Friendly and good players are needed for full experience.

I want to join Talon's group.

Two reasons, one, sound like a genuine person and a nice guild (ok that's two reasons already), two (or three) that guild name is v v special to me...

I agree that to get anything out of PvP you're better off with a (hopefully like-minded) guild. I'm not much into it TBH, so can't really comment further.

PvE on the other hand... I've done pretty much most of both chapters guild-less, and whilst it hasn't posed massive problems, I've at times been envious of my partner - he's been in a guild since the Prophecies betas, and has had what seems a far richer experience than I - made tons of friends, learned from people, got real satisfaction from being part of a team etc.

Adding people to friends list is definitely a valid option, but I find that people on there tend to come and go (or be too committed to their guild to be around for me often), whereas the friends my partner made in betas are still with him.

People say that henchies > PUGs, and whilst this is true in some respects, I think you do lose something of the game by doing it on your own. I've seen the game described as both a 'competitive online RPG', and a 'co-operative online RPG', so whilst you may be perfectly happy to fly solo, in my opinion you do end up lacking in a rather large aspect of the game.

That's my 2-pence, anyway - YMMV

I did the same; in fact, I completed the Prophecies storyline before joining a guild. I've found that there is good and bad about belonging to one. Good: you might be able to find people to help you with a tough mission, or farming, or whatever else you want to do. Bad: the sense of entitlement some people feel when they belong to a guild, as in feeling that people must help them or give them items or whatever. And sometimes people spam for help on the guild channel, which is really annoying.

The ideal guild for me would be a casual PvE guild where nobody expects anything, but if you see that others are online and you're trying to put a party together, you can ask--once--if anyone is interested.

Anyway, I'd say you don't need to belong to a guild for PvE. Building a friends list or learning to use hench is just as effective.

can you guys hear urself talk.... ok let me put it this way....

if you play GW for PvE then guilds are not necessarily needed

but if you PvP or GvG especially because GvG is more fun than HA... then you need a guild.. guilds help... it creates a illusionary kinship between strangers to help each other out and fight as a team... why even think about taking out such a great institution.

Well, they are essential for GvG and AB's, anything else can be done via friends list.
Guilds are great for any kind of pvp as pugs are terrible, also helps a lot in pve when your stuck, theres a lot of bad guilds about, full of people that just want a cape and a tag, but if you get to know a small friendly guild they are great.

I spent some.. Oh, 11 months without a guild. I completed prophecies few times, there were month or two breaks away from the game, been around ever since Factions release again, and after completing the Factions storyline few times I had it.. I either join a guild, or permanently quit the game.

Soo, I looked around more or less actively, tried GWG's looking for guild thread, joined one, the guild died next week, ohwell. Then I was just hanging around in Cavalon, when there was a bit different looking 'guild looking for members'-spam. I made a joke about the guild's name. The recruiter replied in a civil manner, as jokingly. I replied with another joke until I said okay, invite me in.

Been enjoying being in a guild ever since that. Buddies to do AvA and other stuff with, occasional help if I need any, and some helping to do when bored. Some fun peeps to chat with while wading through boring quests/missions etc.

So yes, you can play the game without a guild. Being in a good, nice guild adds much, much more fun to the game, so it's really recommended.
