I dont think there is a difference. But if you want a tank look at the evolution and it should be Heartly. That has the most health and least attack. Good luck

A wolf, but only because the bear has the slowest attack speed of any of the pets. Otherwise the only difference between the various pets is the kind of damage they do (slash/blunt/pierce).

See this series of posts for more.

As said check out the Guide to pets. All pets are the same, exactly the same except for looks. The ONLY difference between them is the type of dmg that some do (irrelevant if you want it to be a tank, when tank is used in the traditional sense). Also, the Bear's attack is slower because of the skill brutal mauling. Other than those things, all pets are the same.

So pick based on skin, then work on which evolution you want (dire, hearty or elder) to serve the role you want.

If I have two tanks which can each take exactly the same amount of damage but one can deal more damage, wouldn't it make sense to take the one that can deal more damage?

This would seem terminally axiomatic, unless one takes 'meat shield' as a literal and expects/wants no damage output from a 'tank'.
