uber low fps, help
Maria stormshield
Hi,
I get incredibly low FPS with my graphic card, which is a BFG 6200OC, which I got for christmas. Now, when standing around, I achieve an average fps of around 20, in battle, i get fps about 10, anywhere else it would be 30. I have updated my drivers to the latest ones on Nvidia's site. i tried -nosound, but that has not been an improvement. If anyone can tell me what is wrong, other than the fact this is not such a great graphic card, tell me.
Thanks in advance

Did it use to be quicker? I am assuming your playing GWF. GWF uses dx9 Rendering, and the 6200 line is the lowest end card that supports dx9 rendering in nVidia, besides the built in 6100.
You could OC, as earlier BFG cards are pretty good for OCing, but it still wont help much, what are the rest of your specs?

4x? are you sure it's 4x? also what settings do you run GW at? That's a decent enough computer. It also shouldnt run so slow, as my friends 9600xt 128mb ddr 1gb ram 2.4ghz runs fine.
It should be 4x/8x, and you should be running at 8x. If you think its at 4x check your BIOS and see what your AGP is set at.

Honestly it sounds about right for that card. AGP 4X does not impede performance at all.
I suggest you just pick up a new video card and sell the old one on eBay.
You gotta spend $100 at the min for a decent card, couple ideas:

If you're not afraid to give open box stuff a try, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16814102002R this X800GTO would be extremely fast for you. Something like 4x faster probably. Newegg has a return policy on open stuff.

Everything increases with a faster transfer rate, it will most likely help your fps a lot..
You should be able to change it from 4x to 8x in your BIOS.
If not, then 4x to 2x, then the only way to speed up your card is change of board, which would only be around 60$.
a 4x/2x slot should not even fit a 6200oc, because a 6200 was not ever manufactured to fit a 4x/2x slot.
Your set up is fine to run GW factions..
If you have onboard sound, it sometimes helps to disable nvidia Surround sound lol..
Also, AGP cards run around 6x, and PCI-Express x16 cards run around 8x. That's why newer SLI boards with both slots at 16x, do not bring about a significant increase in performance.
Although your card is a bit weak, it should still run faster at 8x..

I'm experiencing with similiar issue. I already contacted support, but they didn't told me anything (well, they did - they said I am having lags, that aren't cause on their side - and btw. checked it with their script and ping to their eu servers is ~80ms...-is it really lag?). I have a GF6600, AMD 2600+, 1024MB DDR, AGP 8x. When I log in to GW, everything seems fine, FPS are around 30-40fps'sin town, but, once I minimize guildwars ad open a web-browser, it's getting, worse, much worse. I am talking about drops to around 8fps... That caused that I have to browse on my laptop...Anything have any idea what's wrong with it? I don't think 1gB is bad for GW, since when I look to taskbar, my computer has around 500MB free... I am not having any such experiences with other (online) games at all - just guildwars...

Guild Wars is extremely low demanding. I ran it on an old AMD 2000, with 4x AGP, DIRECT X 8.1 (!) and with all lower specs I see passing here above. That comp had an old NVidia 4200 card (ok I know its fast... but old...)
My frames went trough the roof... So now problem at all
In general try to lower game settings, measure FPS with a suitable program. And see when it rises fast. enable/disable details options/shadows that kind of stuff
Check running background programs (in general running msn and GW is not a good idea if you want to be competative...)
What is your internet connection? for me that proofed the main reason for frame drops...when I run severe internet programs (like downloads, msn, voice over ip progs etc...) you will gradually decrease your fps.
80 ms is high, but not a problem for lag. You will not notice a response time of 0.08 secs... In general first issues arise above 150, while above 300 a game slowly become not-playable... Lag is a bit a general statement, it can have issues on both sides, but in general its not on the server side (if that was the case... we all would experience this... ) It can be your inet provider, your own connection, your computer...or your brother downloading dirty movies...

Probably sound related, try -nosound and see if your fps increases anot.
Check for a post regarding sound, its somewhere here. If not check out the technical section on gwonline.net.
Theres a huge thread about sound causing major fps loss to owners of high end gfx cards 6800 and so on.

I have 4mbit ADSL. By the way, I have 4gb swap partition. No spyware, no viruses, clean windows (it's almost a year, so it doesn't anything to do with OS appereantly, because I reinstalled windows countless since then). I have newest nvidia drivers.

AGP 4X, 8X. Makes NO difference, no video game developer is going to be using the AGP bus to transfer textures from system memory to video card memory unless they have to. 256 MB is plenty of texture memory for guild wars and this is loaded at the start rather than swapped in the middle of game play.
Look to reducing your resolution to 800x600 and lowering the level of details and shadow / special effects. If this still doesn't do it you can pick up great deals for $100-150.

You have WinXP? Hit, Control+Shift+Escape, and see how much CPU and memory are using the running process. Maybe you are using a software that eat resources, or is incompatible with GW. (Test that with and without GW running.)

Thing is, I cant get new hardware till x-mas or something like that. I set the graphics to medium, reflection is on default, and Texture are on high, because I like my armor to look good. I tried setting all of it to low, but that did nothing. I have verizon internet 768k, but i dont trust the numbers they give me.
EDIT:I tried setting down the sound quality of windows and GW, didnt do much, just brought it up to 37 average.

I guess this is not directed to you but rather this issue. I put together a rather large email will full details on problems with FPS and blue screens. I included all the details and information.
It has been a week and no response from Anet yet.

(sorry only know the dutch one... lol) and do you share your connection with other comps? all these factors determine your fps... and I am sure its your connection for it drops when you launch a browser...
|
about sharing, yes, I am sharing my connection with other people (2 more computers) but they aren't doing lot of bandwith. And anyway, even if hose comuters are off, I am still getting those fps...
Please can you explain me, why it's cause my internet connection, since my browser is idle and has only loaded one static page...?
Thank you!

this doesn't sound like a hardware problem at all. Your system is pretty decend and there shouldn't be any problem running GW. My old card is a GeForce 4 and it runs GW at 1/4 setting pretty smooth.

I know this is something alot of ppl do, and as a result the IP provider throttles the connection.
For speed tests I use speedguide.net lot's of options.
levortex
i didn't read all the posts, because i don't have much time, but you could also lower the sound quality. Start GW>options> turn the slider of the lowest bar to the left.
I hope you get higher fps
