How do pets evolve?

I dont understand how pets evolve do they have to be a certain lvl? do I have to do somthing to make them evolve? can someone help

do a search for this in forums, there is atleast one forum already that gives you an indepth, and i mean indepth path and how to lvl ur pet... extremely informative..... i would link it but im getten alot of lag on guru and dont want to hunt for it right now.....
