Guide to buying low/selling high?
monty123
Since that seems to be all the fow wearing peoples techniques, and the rich peoples, I want to learn how to do it(people in post the most money you have ever had thread in screenshots). I have no experience in buying stuff, just pretty much go with whats posted here and just take what ever I can get. So what's your techniques?

The key to buy low sell high is knowing the prices. I like to sit in LA and droks for 30min or so to see what the prices are (the high & low) before i buy or sell anything. Also know where to look (Asc. is low Droks is mid & LA is high price range) so most of the time i buy in Asc then resell in Droks or LA for a little profit. And it does help to know what ppl are into at the moment(what skin ,weapon and so on. hope this helps

Information is money

I would imagine to get into this sort of thing, you would need funds to start buying with. Can anyone suggest an good amount of gold to start with if you plan on getting into power-selling?

You use what you got and when you only got a small amount of gold you buy cheaper things. there is no real differance from high power selling to low power selling just the price.

Horde. No; I'm not talking about minions. Certain items hold value with only small fluctuations in price. Buy them when they are on the downward spiral and sellt hem when they peak in the upper ranges. 2 do this well, you will need 1, probably 2 storage toons; characters created just for the extra bags.
Items like craft, rare craft, perfect mods or Black dye are excellent money makers over the long term. these items are ALWYS in demand, to some extent, and someone is always desperate to get them for less than the merchant is offering. Know Trader prices first and formost when you do this, so you can squeeze as much profit as possible from the materials. No1 will buy from you at straight up trader prices, but you might be surprised how many folks will buy from you for just a little bit less.
Try to buy them from people who have been spamming for a while (sadly, many people go to Ascalon and newb areas to take advantage of inexperienced players. it works, but leaves little room for scruples); they may be willing to take a loss to get back to farming. Mods and rare skins keep their prices better than greens, which become overfarmed quickly and lose value. If you can get a green on the cheap, don't horde it for this very reason. Over time, it depreciates as the people who want it, get it.
Best advice I can give if you want to buy low, sell high: never get imaptient. Thats how other people--the rich folks who "buy low/sell high"--make money. Off YOU.

Personally if you want to be rich. You always got to be the first. The first few days of Factions, Amber was selling for 10k each! I made nearly 250,000 just by faction farming the duel and trading Amber to the impatient players. Jade Wind Orbs were another great deal. Trust me, be the first and you can set the price. Now that you have the knowledge of being first, you need to understand that its very unprofitable to buy something right when it comes out. Wait a week, it'll go down in price.

I usually buy in Droks and sell in LA or Kaenig. Droks has a bunch of airheads

Rare materials is a great way to "buy low/sell high." You can get parchment crafted for 20g + 5 wood (= 60g or so) and sell it for 85 - 100g. There are other materials you can get made on the cheap, too. The trick is to know which ones they are.
lemming
I'm pretty sure that parchment no longer sells for anywhere near 100 to other players.

I stood in Drok's for about half an hour while I did some work.. I bought 3 Totem axes in that time: 5k, 5k, 5.5k. - Sold them for 7k, 7.5k, & 8k.
Instant 7k.

Thanks for the help, Guess all I can do is try and learn from mistakes, as its hard to explain.

Buying low and selling high eh? I didn't really see a point in doing that in GW unless it was some major thing (ectos, shards, etc.). It is easy enough to go out and kill some mobs solo and sell the junk that drops to make a decent amount of money fairly fast. If you must do this, just avoid LA with a fiery passion :P LA = bot paradise, scammer paradise, and over all "U BAI NOW FOR 1000 ectos!!!!1" place

Unless in an extreme case (newbie with a crystalline for 50g?), the money you make goes as far as what you start with. You're better off farming something for 20k/hour than earning 10k profit in an hour than trading with your 20k. I suggest to start with farming (see Ractoh's Spider farming guide in Riverside Province section) to get your initial, then play with your money from there.
Blind Rage
yep yep, at some times you have to risk things, at times i have only made 10k of items which i spammed to sell for 2 hours or more
other times i have made 117k in a very short timespan, sometimes i feel guilty. but i guess thts a trade off.

After release of Factions alot of prophecies green's prices dropped down, the advantage of having 2 chapters is that you can farm or buy SF/Tombs greens in Tyria and sell it in cantha. the idea is buy green cheap out of reach of factions players and sell it to them. (i.e. victo's blade you can get it 2.5-5 K in tyria and you can sell it in cantha for 10-20 K).
P.S. you owe me 10 ectos coz tips like this damaging my profit.

need to know the ins and out of every item need to know the min/max it will sell for need to know is the item in demand/will it sell fast will it be a slow burner
nxt u need an intial outlay of couple hundred k then you play the waiting game..watching out for ppl selling well below average price/NEVER bother buying something if the profit margin will be low ie. bought 100k sold 150k <<pointless u will never make money that way
have a set price in mind and stick to that price when buying/when selling always consider a decent offer even if its below your asking price
never buy if unsure/never trust just 1 persons opinion if looking for a PC
always have a few ppl on your buddylist that are knowledgable with prices ect
few basic tips for you
PS. guru prices do not reflect in-game prices
enjoy

go to granite citadel and spam that you want to buy unwanted green swords shield and axes for 1.5k
I did this for 1 1/2 hours and was sold a victos axe (20/20) for 5k, and Malinon's Shield for 1.5k . Then i sold the victos for 40k and the shield for 20k
60k - 6.5k = 53.5k PROFIT

I bought a sword from Ventari's Sell with +30hp on it for 10k.
Salvaged it, went to Kaineng: "WTS: Sword Pommel +30hp 55k"
Easy 45k in my pocket.

Bought 6500(26 stacks) orbs for ~3500g a stack.
Sold later for ~8000g a stack.
8000g-3500g=4500g*26=117k profit!

Know the prices of things as if you dont or unsure you will lose gold.
Buy popular items which are quick / easy to sell. No point buying an item which is very specialist or has an unpopular skin.
Dont buy stuff for low profit margins i.e. 10k profit. I like to buy items for say 10k and resell for 100k. The 100k I get is usually a quick sale price.
I really dont like to try and squeeze every last gold coin out of an item. If I can sell it for xx k less and get a quick sale ill do it.
Spend alot of time viewing ventaris sale to get an idea of prices
Dont wear 15k / fow armor as people say stuff like, "you are rich you can pay more"
Maybe if you cannot learn all the prices to begin with try specialising in say melee weapons.
Have a couple of hundred k available to begin with is nice so you can buy most stuff. I started with 15k and that small amount has turned into many many hundreds of ecto. If you cannot get several hundred k together I am sure 100k ish would be fine. Farming 100k is relatively easy these days.
When people say offer lowball them.
There is nothing wrong with power trading. It happens in real life too and is totally legal.

I don't typically resell items, but mostly do effective farming. Buying and reselling is a risk if you don't know all the prices, but heres a tip, don't try and resell greens because they often drop rapidly unless you know 100% what the current price tag of that green is.
My biggest profit started off when the update months ago(the one that stablized all trader prices) made major absorptions and major vigors at a still 150-250g per rune. So I took a quick thought and bought dozens of the runes that filled up most of my slots and later sold each of them for 4k each =D ( now thats a huge profit heh)
