After finishing a chest run, a couple of us were still in the party and this guy zoned back to the nearest town. He told me to lead the party, and then try to zone. I did so, and he somehow he canceled the timer (or so he says he did). How exactly was he doing this, or was he doing anything at all? He wouldn't say.

The guy was hitting M then clicking on what zone he wanted. I would say the same zone you guys were in and that cancles it.
