What is the reason why it takes so long to get into a game? The waiting time to enter a game can be horrible. Not enough players? Not enough servers?

Not enough players. Not many play AB, so it can lead to pretty huge wait times.

Correct. However, I play AB often and i havent had a problem getting into matches. It could be what time you are playing as well. If it is late or early people might not be on depending on your time zone.

If we play late at night Pacific time (west coast US) we often go to the international districts to find players. I'm not sure but it seems American and International teams are paired differently.

I dont exactly agree with the 'not enough players' idea. I've seen many groups of 4 when there is more than one international district. I still get 'No opposing party' or whatever.

Maybe Alex or Gaile can enlighten us? And Alliance Battles in Observer Mode would be awesome.

Wrong. There's only a limited number of battles run at one time, and the more people playing AB's, the longer the line to get into an area.
