I haven't played a mesmer or necromancer yet, so I may be very wrong in how a good build for them works. But here are my builds:
Class: Mesmer / Necromancer
Attributes: (cost)
Fast Casting: 1 (1)
Domination Magic: 10 (61)
Inspiration Magic: 10 (61)
Curses: 11 (77)
Total attribute points used: 200/200
Skills:
1) Empathy (availability) - (10,2,20) For 16 seconds, whenever target foe attacks, that foe takes 21 damage.
2) Mind Wrack (availability) - (5,1,5) For 20 seconds, if target foe's energy is zero, that foe takes 82 damage and Mind Wrack ends.
3) Wastrel's Worry (availability) - (5,1,1) After 3 seconds, target foe takes 46 damage. Wastrel's Worry ends prematurely if that foe uses a skill.
4) Spirit of Failure (availability) - (10,3,10) For 30 seconds, target foe has a 25% chance to miss with attacks. You gain 3 energy for each miss.
5) Ether Feast (availability) - (5,2,8) Target foe loses 5 energy. You are healed 21 for each point of energy lost.
6) Energy Drain (availability) (elite) - (5,2,20) Steal 16 energy from target foe. This is an elite skill.
7) Faintheartedness (availability) - (10,2,5) For the next 35 seconds, target foe's attack speed is reduced and that foe suffers health degeneration of 3.
8) Soul Barbs (availability) - (10,2,20) For 30 seconds, target foe takes 23 damage when an enchantment or hex is cast on that target.
This is the anti-warrior version. Mostly it relies on Soul Barbs and Wastrel's Worry to deal damage. Heavy hex build to get best out of Soul Barbs and stopping those warriors.
Class: Mesmer / Necromancer
Attributes: (cost)
Fast Casting: 10 (61)
Domination Magic: 10 (61)
Inspiration Magic: 10 (61)
Curses: 5 (15)
Total attribute points used: 198/200
Skills:
1) Backfire (availability) - (15,3,20) For 10 seconds, whenever target foe casts a spell, that foe takes 100 damage.
2) Mind Wrack (availability) - (5,1,5) For 20 seconds, if target foe's energy is zero, that foe takes 82 damage and Mind Wrack ends.
3) Energy Burn (availability) - (10,2,20) Target foe loses 8 energy and takes 8 damage for each point of energy lost.
4) Power Drain (availability) - (5,1,25) If target foe is casting a spell, the spell is interrupted and you gain 21 energy.
5) Ether Feast (availability) - (5,2,8) Target foe loses 5 energy. You are healed 21 for each point of energy lost.
6) Energy Tap (availability) - (5,3,20) Steal 12 energy from target foe.
7) Mantra of Recovery (availability) (elite) - (15,0,20) For 70 seconds, spells you cast recharge 50% faster. Whenever you cast a spell, you lose 4 energy or Mantra of Recovery ends. This is an elite skill.
8) Malaise (availability) - (5,2,2) For 15 seconds, target foe suffers energy degeneration of 2 and you suffer health degeneration of 2.
This is the anti-caster build. I can focus on using Backfire to cause problems for one caster while I use Mind Wrack and the drains to shut down another. Can always just focus on one at a time, too. I don't know if there are any other good skills from the Necromancer line that will work with this build though.
I'm not big on builds that are like "Do A, then B, then C, then D, etc". I like builds that are like "Do A, then B, then/or do C, then D". Just more of my style to be able to mix things up if I feel like it or need to. What do you guys think? I'm usually the Ranger/Warrior/Druid guy in games. These classes/professions are new to me.

I prefer the second build, since its alot more versatile. Casters rarely attack, so you would only be able to target warriors.
In the second build you seem to have the theme of stealing plenty of energy then punishing them with Mind Wrack. In that case you should get rid of backfire, since you want your opponent to be casting spells, not waiting for backfire to end and have their energy recharge. Ether feast is usually suffieicent enough for healing, it should heal you for around 80-90 and it has a good recharge and cast cost. I would think about replacing Power Drain with Power Leak. To replace backfire I would recommend using Ether Lord, it pays for itself (assuming you cast it when your energy pool is low). And since you're not using any necro skills, move the points from curses into your other mesmer skills since you don't need it.

It'd help if you wrote your points as 9+1, 10+2, etc. It's hard to validate that someone is correctly doing the points if they actually write this as 10,12 and don't specify what runes they are assuming. X+R is far more clear (where you get +2 for a mask+rune).
Oh lordy... let the Mind Wrack / Ether Lord flame wars begin. Do you really find those skills useful, or are you proposing this so that the rest of us can get a good laugh when he/she uses those skills in PvP or GvG... *winks*

Thx for the feedback. I didn't count for runes in the build cause I tend not to. Once I actually play the build I like to figure what I feel will need the runes the most.
Concerning Backfire, do casters really wait for it to end before they start casting? I know it can cause serious damage, but if there is no one in the team that can get rid of it, do they really just wait for it to end? I heard people saying they cast through it if necessary, so I thought it is good to throw into the build.
And I'm not a big fan of Ether Lord, but I may just give it a chance

Kha I would recommend running a search on this forum for Ether Lord before you "give it a try"
It has been proven to be effective in only a very limited number of circumstances. I am not qualified to say more, run the search and read up on want the people who do the math say.

summary of ether lord:
you lose all your mana when you use it. you get more mana from just letting your mana regenerate. it takes very little mana from your opponent. it can easily be removed from your opponent. there are much better mana stealing spells that steal more, for less mana and in less time.
Ether Lord is B A D and unless they change it soon it will still be B A D.
the only use for it is to use it on someone so they say "hey he used ether lord he is a noobie im going to kill him" and attack you, li8ke a taunt. other than that (and o doubt that would work, they would just laugh at you) it is not worth the 10 mana it costs, let alone any extra it demolishes.
there that a good ether lord flame?

Yep, I know how bad it is. I tried it out with my E/Me a few betas back. I didn't like it then and dont plan on using it until they improve it. Maybe it will be changed for this beta. If it is, then I'll give it a chance for real, if I remember to...
Too many builds to try out, so little time.
