Incoming: Another Broken Profession
JohnnyV045
PLEASE READ ME BEFORE POSTING: I have not said, and will not say, that Assassins are a broken class. The title of this thread is a reference to the belief of some people (READ: not me) that Assassins are "broken". I do not share that view, I was simply making a half SARCASTIC statement towards that end. However, even if I did say Assassins were broken (WHICH I'M NOT), does that somehow make me less knowledgeable about the game and/or game balance? It's an OPINION...
Anyways, I was reading the newest Scribe, and I read something that brought up a strong sense of deja vu...
"Assassins wear only lightweight armor and prefer to avoid damage by not being there when the enemy's strike lands." (source: Guild Wars-Factions Instruction Manual)
"While [Dervishes] have exceptional melee abilities, they do not wear heavy armor like that of a Warrior, but rather rely on their wit and reflexes to defend themselves." (source: The Scribe, July 27, 2006)
Anyone else see where I'm going with this?
EDIT: Strongly edited, to point out the point of the original post. It could be argued forever whether or not assassins are broken or not, and I will not do it here.

I think it's far to early to say- we know nothing other than the class and attribute descriptions.
See how they perform this weekend first (and even then, since skills are in a beta state, it might be too early to say for sure).

No, I think you know nothing of game balance and should remove yourself from any discussions.

I dont thin that sins are broken, like you say, but more dangerously, people are not really sure how to play them. They are not warriors, eve though they are a melee profession. If people really got down and studied (ok just played and experimented a bit more) them, thy really could flourish. Once Saturday (GMT) roles around we'll have a better understanding of the devishers, and what's this I hear about selected genders for the PvP, can you only play female/male?!
JohnnyV045
Oh, I'm not saying it's for sure. My point (kind of) in this post is, don't those descriptions sound very similar to you?

If you consider assassins a 'broken profession'... you've already disqualified yourself as one with knowledge of the game.
Thom
The word "broken" implies a question about game balance.
Assassin durablility issues come from the lack of solid defensive skills as much as armor. Dervishes will not lack this flaw.
Finally assassin were not designed to take damage, where Dervishes seem to be designed as solid self reliant characters.

I don't get what sorta role Dervishes will serve though... If I want to tank I'd get a warrior and if I want massive damage a ele is probably going to be better at it.

when I heard about broken professions I auto-assumed he meant ritualists. and then i thought he might be talking about mysticism being broken or something...so...

that scythe is probably gonna have an attack swing speed 1/2 sec longer then a hammer

i see where Arena Net is going....I think...
I think they are trying to create "front-line" characters (by front-line, i mean warrior, assinssin, and now this) but get us out of the "front-line fighters should only be tanks, otherwise they suck" sort of thought.
Anyone else seem to think this is what Arena Net is trying to do?

Assasin is the best support damage dealer in FoW.
Nevin
Its too early to say.

I wouldn't call the assassin class "broken", just misused. Otherwise, I see where you're going: The Dervishes could be misunderstood, meaning that like the assassins, they'll be used as frontline warriors, taking damage and dying.
But of course, it's still too early to say. Just wait til midnight!

Dervishes are going to be able to use AoE attacks and normal attacks. Its a pressure style class. Combine this with smite is going to be interesting to see.

Melee class + Noob = frustration for the rest of us.
Happened with Warriors, then Assassins, and soon to be Derverish.
Paperfly
After several hours of Dervish play in RA - and two Gladiator points - I'm willing to go on record as saying the Dervishes can continue to operate under some severe hate. And I'm talking both Spiteful Spirit and Soul Barbs on my enchantment-spammer levels of hate.
Will they be susceptible to builds that specifically hate on them? Of course - rock, meet paper; and that's true of every class in the game.
I'm also a lot more confident than I was of their ability to survive frontline PVE play.

The dervish sounds to me what i've always wanted to do with my smiter, but i'll just have to wait for a pve event to see if its all the hype says it will be
