if you're looking for free, i can recommend AVG Antivirus (http://www.grisoft.com)

if you don't mind paying a little bit, Bitdefender (http://www.bitdefender.com) has a better virus engine IMO, and the Pro version comes with a robust suite of tools like antispam and firewall.

hope that helps.

I use Avast, it is free and updates itself 2-3x per week.

you can schedule boot scan also, very helpful for the peskiest viruses.

it's free but you have to register it once a year through e-mail, which isn't bad at all
I've been using it for quite a while now

i traded in my paid etrust antivirus for AVG free when both pc magazine and maximum pc gave it higher ratings.

as for free firewalls it is hard to go wrong with either of these

this is a pc magazine top choice and free as well

AVG Free is great. It works, and you can't beat the price.

This is a newer one that seems to be getting some good reviews:

Me and my friend used several antivirus programs on his computer after he downloaded a bunch of crap off limewire. The free online norton scan found 3, windows defender found 2, and avg found....0, so i'm not so sure how great it is.

Oh, don't bother with windows defender, here I am setting some options on windows defener on when to scan my computer for crap, and 3 pop us come up. Also it can't remove a strange adware for some reason.

I'll have a look on those software you guys suggested, thanks! Should keep me safe for quite a while

If it's adware you should be able to remove it yourself. Just go to add/remove programs and look for anything suspicious like viewpoint media.

for adware, i use Ad-Aware and Spybot. however, i've noticed some new malware and trojans that can interfere with their scans, so you might want to experiment with other less-popular programs.
