Wow Or Guild

Hi all just want to know what you guys think of WOW over Guild and Guild over WOW im thinking of buying either one i like the looks of this game just wondering about the feed back on wich one you would take im a ex UO player PVP let me know what you think thanks for any input

If you're in for PvP content, Guild Wars is definitely the better of the two. It's mostly PvP focused, and there's no need to grind your arse off to get uberomgwtfpwn loot like in WoW just to be halfway competitive. You can roll a pre-made and get right to the good, juicy, PvP core instead of spending 1,000 hours or more grinding to level 60 so that you don't get One-Hit KO'd by some crazy Rogue (as is common in WoW).

Definitely Guild Wars.

well, you ARE asking this question in a guild wars forum, so what do you think people are going to tell you?
i actually think that WoW is a better game, but it also comes with a monthly fee.


i think that the PvE aspect of WoW is MUCH better than the GW's PvE; in WoW, you can't really "beat" the game like you can in GW because WoW keeps coming out with new end-game raid instances. in WoW you can reach up to level 60, and with WoW's new expansion coming out soon, the cap will be raised to level 70. meanwhile GW's level cap is probably always going to stay at 20.

to me, the PvP parts of the 2 games are similar, although in GW i've noticed that success is PvP is basically just running the right build (iway, anyone?). although i havent pvp'd that much, i've done HoH, GvG some, but not too much; maybe someone can help me comparing them PvP-wise.

one part about WoW that i like better than GW is the ability to create different races, and race/class combo's. seeing humans everywhere in GW gets a bit dull.


the reason i quit WoW was because i got tired of spending both my weekend nights raiding the whole night. it was also a nice relief not have to pay $15 a month for WoW.


so basically, i'd say if you just absolutely LOVE PvE and strive to get the best gear, i'd say go with WoW.
but if you would rather have a quick trip up to level 20 and then just PvP the rest of your days, then i'd go with GW.

brian, WoW is muchhh better, GW you WILL get bored of at some point, but with WoW you wont since they keep coming out with new stuff, thats why they want you to pay monthly because they make more updates that guild wars. Also, in WoW, the fighting is better, you can meet other people that arent in your party when you go outside, but with GW, you can only see the monsters, yourself, and the people in your party, thats what makes GW really junk!

i suggest you watch some wow and gw videos on youtube or sumtin

also, with WoW, you can ride pets like flying griffons or bone horses and you can jump off high places without dieing. In wow, there are hardly any barriers and so much easter eggs and hidden places. And as leech said, you can have many different looking chracters! The graphics arent too bad too, i would say they are the same as guild wars, but a different style, their's is more fantasy than guild wars realistic style. The monsters there are awesome too, they have humoungous monsters, and very small monsters, its very fun! They have way more fantasy type places than guild wars like floating islands and such. The best thing to me is the flying on pets!

90% of them are dance videos.

People get bored of everything at some point... Just because Blizzard pumps new stuff into WoW every now and then, it doesn't mean someone won't get bored of the game. ArenaNet adds new things to Guild Wars too.

I'm not bored of GW yet, but I'm completely sick of WoW. Go figure?

Guild Wars has Map Travel, which does away with the need for mounts. Here's another point:

Map Travel is always available in Guild Wars. Mounts require grind to obtain.

You're going into so much lavish detail about WoW PvE, but not saying anything about PvP. As I see in the original post, this user is a UO PvP player. What's to say he's interested at all in the PvE content? Comparing apples to oranges never works, and you are saying WoW, a PvE oriented game, is better than GW, a PvP oriented game, just because of PvE content.

You shouldn't have any problems with your connection, unless heavy storm clouds pass in the way of the signal (which you're used to anyway ). Even someone on 56k Dial-Up can play Guild Wars without any real problems. That's another thing that sets it apart from other online games.

Played both. I was bored out of my mind by wow. I didn't really prefer the graphics it had, and to get good gear it requires hours of intense raiding/farming...no thanks, not for me. Sure, you may like it yourself, but I got bored of it fairly fast.

Guild Wars ftw. I like the team-work thingy they got going on, but it does get boring at times.

My roommate playes teh WoW and he loves it. But he says he gets bored of WoW at times...

I personally find WoW a lot more boring in the long run.

The 'dangerous' thing about WoW is that even though you're not really having fun playing it's still addicting anyway, I guess that's why many people have problems quitting.

Overall I like GW better because it's not about items and grinding (sure some people chose to do that anyway, but you don't have to since it won't really get you anything significant).

WoW is great when you start to play it. I think I was more impressed with WoW compared to guild wars for sure. I always started off as a night elf, and let me tell you, the music and imagination of that place is incredible... which sets up a lot of disappointment later because many of the boards are crap (like the barren orange places, where there is a lot of). That's not to say all the places suck. There is a lush world there to explore, and you won't get sick of it for a really long time. I would say as far as graphics go, WoW is superior.

But WoW has many, many inconviences that will make your head snap. And at some point, you'll explode and not want to play anymore, no matter how much you have invested in the game.

1) It takes a lot of work to get a mount. Lots of instance dungeons to get items, then you have auction and repeat for a very long time to get the gold to buy a mount. And once you get it, you can't help but feel disappointed since it's really not that much faster than your running speed. It only makes dodging fights easier... since without a mount, you basically HAVE to fight most of the time.

2) Battles with low-level enemies will annoy you. Escaping from battles is rather clumbsy for many characters. Sometimes once your aggro'd into a battle, you just know you're going to die and there's nothing you can do about it.

3) The difference between your character and equivalent level monster is rather small. You basically can only go head to head with 1 foe with most classes, maybe 2 max. The only exceptions are classes like the shaman, which can solo 2-3 at the same time (when I played anyway) almost right from the beginning of the game. It's actually unfair.

4) Long-distance travel stinks. You may spend 5 or 10 minutes just getting from one place to the next, even using the griphons. It is purely focused at wasting the player's time. Why not just transport you there via portals? Why use a bird and actually physically move you across all the maps and load all the characters and graphics for?

5) Non-instanced worlds can become a problem when questing. Trying to kill 15 creatures of a rare type or trying to collect 15 pelts of something when 20 people are competing for them is really stupid. Doing it in a party takes forever. Also people doing quests that take time to reset will annoy you to no end. You may even have to kill a creature 5 times to get it to drop once, so expect killing hundreds of creatures of the same type to get 15 pelts. It's dumb and boring.

6) Getting drops in a group always caused me a lot of frustration since morons would roll on items that they couldn't use nor trade but you really needed it. In WoW, if multiple people in the same group want an item, they have to roll for it. You can let the leader deside, but most groups don't run that way, and many times you can't even trust the leader.

7) Grinding is basically necessary. It's still faster to grind than to do the quests, even if it is boring.

8) They still have you doing those kill X creature quests at high levels. Couldn't they come up with something more interesting? The quests in WoW will become dreadfully borring.

9) Dying at later regions in the game will annoy you. The common answer is, "Just don't die" - but when you do, the ressurection points are in such far corners on the map... and the maps become so huge... that it might take you several minutes to get back to your corpse. And when you die again after a 4 minute walk... you have to take another 4 minute walk. This only amplify's being in a party full of people that can't play the game. It's not so bad early in the game, but it gets so much worse later on.

I think guild wars might have this problem too, since I'm so new to the game... but this is my experience with WoW.

10) Losing XP in WoW can reset hours of play. Yes, you don't have to use the spirit healer. But guess what? You probably will use it when the mobs around your corpse get huge. What makes things worse, is that many times people will cause your death, or it'll just be an unfortunate run in that you had no idea it was going to come. Sure, it might be realistic, but when an idiot runs in my direction with 5 guys following him... and they decide to attack me instead... I'm not the happiest person in the world at that point. That player has just wasted a lot of my time.

11) Mining/Farming is rediculous. You will spend hours getting materials and doing run after run just to make 1 armor. The best stuff in the game is rediculously hard to make.

12) Not all classes are balanced. Some barely scrap by, and have no chance if 2 monsters attack it, while others coast through the entire game.

There are many other things I didn't like... but I haven't played the game in a very long time... and quite frankly... I'm surprised I remember that much.

good grief what a long post from egervari. to sum it all up WoW=PVE and GW=PVP. I started out with GW and loved it. Prophecies PVE was good and kept me playing for close to a year. Did not really touch PVP except when i ran my monk to Droks and got the end game armor at lvl 6 and went back to Ascalon to bully the newbies. haha that was fun. Now i'm playing WoW and yes the good stuff looks very far from where i'm standing but i'm slowly getting there. I love the journey. Instant action (PvP) is not really my style. I would like to think that for all the 100+ hours i put in i am at least better than somebody who just created a character and got himself to lvl 20 in 4 hours.

I play both games couple hours in a day.

Guild Wars is the nr.1 for me considering I have all my best friends there & PvP side is best that I've ever experienced in an online game & the fact that you don't have to grind 24/7 to get a chance to hold the most expensive items in the game - those all make me want to go back online day after day without getting so much bored. I've managed to achieve so much in GW (getting notable rank in PvP & explore the most dangerous high-end areas) and shared some of the best game experiences there with my friends, and still, I didn't have to play the game 24/7 to witness all this.

On the other hand, WoW is very nice game as well, but I'd play it only for the PvE side. PvP in that game is really hollow and painful. You might get a feeling that you have to play many hours to get some value for the monthly fee that has to be paid, but I play WoW only 10 hours a week or so due to my work and I don't have any bad feelings about that. But, if you want to be the best of the best in that game - get ready to clear up your calendar and sink in to the world of Azeroth.

Things what shines in WoW: The rich lore behind that world. I've spent so many hours reading about history and stories about Azeroth and Warcraft universe. Other is the feel of exploration. Propably 90% of my gametime in WoW has been running around finding new places , but still I've been able to level up pretty good.

Conclusion:

Guild Wars succeeds to give fantastic experiences (equally in PvE & PvP) without forcing the player to sweat for all that. WoW is wonderful game as well, but PvP side isn't anything compared to GW, and WoW is a rewarding game for especially those that are willing to play more.

If you care *at all* about graphics, then you'll get GW. If you like PvP you'll get GW. If you like level playingfields, you'll get GW. If you don't want to pay a monthly fee, you'll get GW.
If you want a persistent world, where there's other players apart from those in your team around when you're adventuring, you'll get WoW. If you feel that someone who's been playing a long time should have unassailable advantages over someone who's not been playing a long time, you should get WoW.

You should be aware, though, that GW isn't in any way "FPS-like", as is often stated. The only similarity is that GW, like First Person Shooters, have a level playingfield - but so does Bridge, Scrabble and Tennis.

jackie, sure there's a lot of lore in the Warcraft universe BUT basically there is no storyline feel whatsoever when you play the game.

If you want to get stronger by spending huge amount of time to grind your stuff and experience, you will get WoW.

If you want to get stronger by improving yourself rather than your virtual character, you will get GW.

The downside of GW is PvE experience when talking about what you can do there. The combat system is in my opinion a lot creative in GW but the amount of things you can do is a lot more limited in GW than in WoW.

Oh, I forgot to mention this one.

13) The quest log can hold only so many quests... which means that you'll have to erase some. The quests come blarring at you so fast in some areas, and you won't be high enough level to solve most of them when you get them, that you're only option is to erase them and "remember" where you got the quest at so you can go back and get it later. This is frustrating since I'm a software engineer, and I know the computer can hold more than 10 or 15 quests or whatever the limit is. They could have had no such limit at all. It's all designed to... you guessed it... waste the player's time.

Example. You delete quest X (which you can't do right now) to add quest Y (which you can do right now) because the quest log is full. Quest X was given at the most south eastern part of the world. Quest Y, your current location, is on the most north western part of the world. So if you want to do that quest at a later point... you have to travel back to quest X again... which means you might spend 20-30 minutes travelling to get a quest in your log book. Oh... and then after you get the quest... you realize to solve it, you have to head back to the south western part of the world again... and then travel all the way back to get your reward. It's really hard to make excuses to do that much travelling.

The cycle is vicious. Most quests aren't like that, but there are a few that will make your head snap. Guarenteed. It just makes me wonder what the hell the games designers were thinking. "Fun" was not part of the design. This was a very frustrating point, which caused me to grind rather than quest after awhile, which I also hated. Then I just stopped playing.

I had a character at level 47 or 49, so I was fairly far into the game, with lots of gold and a mount. I worked for it all, but it took an entire month to do it, and I spent too much time doing it. I can't say guild wars is better (I'm still getting into it), but WoW will definately leave a sour taste in your mouth when you get that high in levels. But maybe it's me or a certain personality type.

For pvp I'd much prefer Guild wars, although I haven't played wow for 2 months and they have put another patch thru, maybe this will change.

I transferred my main (rogue) to a pvp server and hated it within a week, worste part is the kiddie mentality on pvp servers and of course the bugs/possible exploits players will pursue over normal types of pvp.

I still miss D2 to an extent kinda liked the pvp aspect of that game.

Now that wow has introduced the character payed transfers I'll be shipping my rogue back to my old server, re-install the game and play it again.

So far after 2 months in GW's, wow has been more fun. A plus is the centralized gameplay. Running with a guild that always has vent going and will be grouping constantly. Where as in GW's I haven't found that yet.

PvP seems good in guild wars although (AB shits me to no end now) but alot of the higher pvp doesn't seem so accessible as what wow's alternative is. IDK I will still play GW's maybe I'll get into the endgame pvp someday and I'll then prefer it to wow's pvp.

But nevertheless, despite the fact that WoW doesn't have a story that drives players forward, the lore itself gives depth to the world & places out there.
