what do I have to savage to get special materials

It's salvage...
For common crafting materials, pretty much anything, can be gained. Use a regular Salvage Kit on early items.
Later on in the game some items may have the Rare materials. At this point start using an Expert or Superior Kit. But it's still down to luck.
Buy kits from the Merchant (as well as Identification kits... you'll need them)
and double-click them to bring up the salvage pointer, then click on the item you wish to salvage.
The reason I suggested getting an ID kit is because some items (weaps and armour) may be labelled "Unidentified". Use an ID kit to see what it has. Precious weaps should go straight to the merchant, Highly Salvageable weaps... use an Expert Salvage Kit.
