ok so i've finally gotten the opportunity to make a mesmer, but i have no idea what secondary profession goes well with them. i know mesmer makes a great secondary for lots of other classes, but what makes a good secondary for mesmers?
and i know there is no "best" anything, i'm just wondering what people's thoughts were on what has worked out well for them.
Need some help on secondary prof.

Well im sure someone will give you a much detailed explanation, but here's a general pathway when considering your second profession:
/N - Good for combining the Curses line with Illusion magic
/R - umm, not as favourable, but use Wilderness Survival more than any other line. Supposedly good for Serpent's Quickness, but I dunno. For IW, Beast Mastery is an automatic must.
/W - IW and flurry For PvP instances this is a good choice. Also harnessing the tactics line is more favourable than any other line.
/Mo - Earn yourself the title of "Resmer" and bring rebirth. I don't use healing spells, a monk can do a more effective job.
/A - Shadow arts plays a decent defensive role for mesmers
/Rt - Generous Was Tsungrai + Fast Casting makes a better heal than ether feast. Keep that in mind. Flesh of My Flesh is also good in this area as well.
/E - FC Nuker. I don't care what anyone else says, an Elementalist may have more base energy, but once that energy is used up, its the Mesmer who recovers much quicker.

Me / N - best sinergy, you can do countless things with this combo
Me / R - worst combination, little to no skill sinergy
Me / W - mostly in IW, but Heal Sig is a great heal that can fit in just about any build and greatly outperforms most alternatives
Me / Mo - mostly in large teams. general uses would be condition removal of fast res.
Me / A - mostly in large teams. shadow arts support. either defensive or stuff like shadow shroud.
Me / Rt - 2nd worse after R. very little sinergy.
Me / E - mostly in a specific 8 person team build known as FC Spike. air based.

If this is for PvE:
/R - condition spreader
/W - tactics for defense and movability; IW build
/Mo - fast rezing; fast healing (not as good as monk though);
/E - fast nuking (doesn't have as big energy pool as E/x); great defenses
/Rt - fast spirit spamming; fast healer; fast rezer; fast chaneller
/A - okay defenses
/N - hex master; condition spreader; combat manipulator; etc.
Good luck with your new character.

IMO?
Me/A: Dark Escape, perhaps for an IW combo (albeit one that will be smashed to bits in PvP ^_^")
Me/E: FC Airspike, Gale Domination, Glyph of Renewal in case you don't want to dump too much into FC for MoR.
Me/Mo: Remember to bring a hard rez. Purge Signet is nice.
Me/N: Hex spreader, mostly. Why else...? Oh fine, there ARE some things else. Warrior hate, etc. Many things. I don't like being a condition spreader.
Me/R: Used mostly for Serpent's Quickness. For Dom, I'd rather go Me/Mo and use MoR.
Me/Rt: (Pick Me, I don't think Rit spirits are spells.) Flesh of my Flesh, and maybe some Channeling/Restoration.
Me/W: Healsig, or IW. If you're just bringing for Healsig, although it's a great skill, I rather stick to Me/Mo for the hard rez. Your choice.
Any questions, ask. I'm quite rusty, though.

Rangers and Mesmers are just too oddly similar and different at the same time to really work well together.
/A has a bunch of fun quirky things you can do with it, but most of it has to do with PvP.

here is my 2 bits:
for one thing, I have found pretty decent synergy between all classes (proph anyway, don't have factions)
Me/E - Glyphs, wards, extra armor, FC nuker (nuker is not my fav, but works pretty well)
Me/Mo - Resmer, monk support (condition removal, heal party spam, vigorous spirit, other non-divine favor based monk stuff, succor on monks - especially a bonder), Martyr/purger
Me/N - Condition/hex spreading, Grenth's Balancing
Me/R - Distracting Shot FTW (it doesn't do any dmg, but it doesn't with a R primary either), beast mastery (I love my dire warthog), Troll's Unguet, Serpent's Quickness, spirit support
Me/W - IW with a FFS cyclone axe and flurry, tactics buffs (least fun secondary for me...I also really hate healsig in most instances)
No idea on Sin and Rit, don't have factions
@Snipious
I don't think you gave the Me/R enough of a chance (you started on a R right?). Probably too used to the awesomeness of a R/ to think it works well as /R
