use a vengeful build:
16 restoration, 9 inspiration, 9 illusion
I run VwK, arcane echo, vengeful weapon, soothing memories, ancestral and soothing visage (I've only ever used one though, but sometimes a backup is good in case it gets interrupted), physical resistance and weapon of warding as a backup. in case your VwK chain gets interrupted. Getting to the onis is harder than taking them out, but still not difficult once you get the hang of it.

melee with not significant self heals onis are especially perfect when they hit twice as often so they die well. All of the outcasts are particularly weak as well to this build (minus the bosses with the possible exception of aurius). Presumeable carp groups should present no problems as well. Troublesome PVE opponents would be casters who actually like casting spells instead of wanding, anything with significant healing ability, anything with ranged interrupts (mesmers/rangers).
There are quite a few threads on how to use the build and good targets for it as well though so I won't presume to be the expert, seek and ye shall find.

yes, I've found that its times like that when weapon of warding is good since you take less damage. I've had to wean myself from the touch ranger mentality of 'too much energy? burn some more' and cast less as well. VwK is an efficient killer and will only use vengeful weapon when down to the last one or when I'm out of VwK. Soothing is very cheap while holding and still I am a miser on it. My current technique is to 1 preload the physical resistance and arcane echo 10 secs out or so, 2 aggro, 3 VwK, and 4 (hopefully it doesnt get interrupted but I try to cast as they close still) throw up ancestral or sympathetic visage). I wait until the VwK drops and recast, follow it up usually with a soothing and sometimes another visage. On the 3rd VwK I'll generally start the vengeful spamming.
One possible solution which I have also used though is swapping out one of the visages for channeling, this allows more spammage, but as an enchantment its useless against the outcast deathhands.

Dont use weapon of warding... you want them to hit you... Resilient weapon is way better...

Order of casting
- Resistance
- Wait for energy
- Cast Resilient
- Cast Visage
- Cast Echo
- Run in
- Cast Vengeful - recast whenever it wears off
- Wait a while
- Shadow Shroud wears off so does visage
- Cast other visage
Should be dead by now...

I think you missed my point or I didnt explain well enough why warding is in there:
for when you are out of VwK to protect yourself until it recharges, clear enough?
regardless, my build works, so does Rebel Hero's w/e
