Secondary ranger .... but...

I am a secondary ranger so i have access to the pets. I want to get a phoenix as a pet,but some ppl tell me to stop using pet because they are useless with my level of atrributes to it, 5 rank. Are they right?

Also, if i do get a pet, what would anyone suggest for it to become, i wanted elder at first, but no i am thinking towards aggresive (how would i get that). I am unsure of the pets stats. are they the same as yours (max 480)?

Finally I want to know the Armor Level of the pets.

There is a great pet guide somewhere floating around. Check the other pages of this forum, you'll find it. It tells you all about pets and their evolution (how get get it to what you want).

Bears attack slower, but all other aspects of pets are the same with each other.

Level 5 beastmastery is low, but it depends on what you want to use the pet for.

Pet evolution again depends on what you want it for, main attack, tank, loving companion for long trips, casual distration, etc.

The other main characteristic pets have is that they are either slashing or piercing type damage.

They evolve at levels 11 and 15 so you might wanna resist naming it until after you've trained it up.

I made a couple of video's the other week where you can train them up in prophecies Stage 1 and Stage 2, hope they're useful to you.

At level 20 with the equivalent to infused armour a pet is still useful at your attributes, ask any Warrior Beastmaster.

^ agreed, this guide is amazing.

Now, should you take a pet with 5 BM? The damage dealt by the pet increase with your level in beast mastery. However, its armor and hp remain unchanged. So it really depends on what you wanna do with it. Most of the rangers going with a pet have a low level of beastmastery. 3/4 of the B/P don't have more than 5 BM. With a low level, your pet will add a few damages but you can probably deal way more if you replace charm and comfort by 2 offensive skills. However; even with low BM you can use your pet as an extra tank. A few mages I know even bring a bear with them so the mobs will try inerupt its bestial mauling instead of thei spells.

So it's up to you...

I think its just to tell if its dire, aggresive elder, hearty or playful ....

BTW i don't see anything that guide had on any of the factions pets type of damage and speed of damage. I have a melendru's stalker...but i am waiting to see if i can get a pet phoenix. I am hoping to see if anything special happens, just like the bear thing where it attacks slower, maybe a factions pet has an advantage :-)...or not.

One last thing... what would be a good consider for a pet type(i.e. aggresive dire.....etc.) for me a primary warrior

Personally when i charm a new pet i take it straight out for training and level it up to 15 before i even think of taking it in a mission or farm with me. It makes no sense to name it before for me. When i play monk i always heal pets too, unless its below lvl 15, as a monk i refuse to waste my mana on a low level pet just because its owner can't be bothered to train it properly. Not only that but everytime it dies it wipes out the rangers skills and renders him defenceless which makes them a near useless member of the team as well as wasting skill slots. Hopefully the new DP rules for pets will force people to train them properly.

One last thing... what would be a good consider for a pet type(i.e. aggresive dire.....etc.) for me a primary warrior For the characteristics of factions pets, for once, guilcwiki is not your friend -
http://guild.gamewikis.org/wiki/Pet ; check this page, and the discussion about pets damage (link at the bottom of the page).

Now what kind of pet for your warrior. I think it actually depends on your build. Many will probably disagree, I let them post their pint of view, but I'd say Hearty would be nice in most of the cases for a PvE warrior. If you are a tank, a pet with more hp will help you tank a bit longer; if you go as a damage dealer, the few damage points a dire pet may have won't make a difference, and if you're in trouble, you can step back behind your pet a few seconds to receive some healing - more hp for your pet = more chances to survive longer. And as anyway I don't expect you to have a high level of beastmastery (well.. unless you wanna bring Tigers Furry), your pet won't deal a lot of damages, so the dire bonus wil not be noticeabe.

ok cool i will try hearty. I like to hack and slash a lot so its fun if my pet can stall the enemies while i use healing singet to recover, although, if my pet is in a group would it be easier to just have the monks help it heal whil it can easily hunt down the enemies if its in a dire type?....i dunno....i rly enjoy soloin though...guess its a hard choice lol.

Well according to guildwiki (that may be wrong...) their health and AL are based on their level, and not on your level of BM.

It's based on level. I take a level 20 pet with 0 in beast mastery and it can take more damage than the warrior. In my opinion it's not worth putting points in beast mastery unless you are being a beast master and your pet is the damage dealer. Otherwise it's a damage taker.

Yup I've just tested it in the Isles of the Nameless to make sure:

The first health bar shows the health left of my lvl 20 pet after 1 obelisk strike with 0 BM; the second bar shows the health left with 16BM. Thet're identical. So yeah, the health and armor of your pet are based on its level and not on your level of beast mastery. Your level of beast mastery only enhances the damage dealt by the pet and its chance of making critical strikes..

According to the guide, a L20 pet is a 17-28 damage weapon that attacks every 2.14 seconds. You would need 12 Beastmastery for it to do the full 100% damage, just like a sword or a bow.

It gets a +15% damage bonus / -60 health penalty if it is Dire.
It gets no bonuses or penalties if it is Elder.
It gets a -15% damage penalty / + 60 health bonus if it is Hearty.

It has 80AL like a warrior or paragon. (you can get a large global damage reduction using Call of Protection as well and buff it with Watch Yourself! etc too)

Awesome!...ive been thinking of giving up some points off of my sword mastery to give it to my beastmastery..since my sword mastery is 15 and my own sword req. is 8...i can give up 7 points to beastmastery and double PWN my enemies XD

...actually....NVM the 12 beastmastery... i dun wanna give up too much in swordsmanship.....my question now is i want to have 10 beastmastery .... would that be worth it at all? I would really enjoy having a companion...but im really worried that it dosen't stop attacking..is there a "call back" spell that they have? What attack power would it have?

I would like to know about the phoenixes and a few of the factions pets type of damage....i would like to get a pet with anything other than slashing damage!!! Can anyone tell me how the bird attacks...my bet is that its a peircing attack :-)...but i haven't seen it attack...ALSo...this may just be a rumor...but ppl have been saying the the phoenix has a special ability to ressurect people!!!! That would be nice! :-)

A pet rezzing, that could seriously hurt balance, so my bet is it will not rez.

Black Widows do piercing damage ans do Dune Lizards, other Prophecies pets do slashing. Damage type of Factions pets is not known yet.

I think you could use a pet at 10 BM. just give it whirl in PvE, take henchies, explore a bit and find a setup that you feel comfortable with.

There is a lot of information in this thread, "A guide to pets, by Jenosavel and Epinephrine". The relevant damage table take from there is:

At BM 10 a Lvl 20 Hearty/Playfull pet would do about 16 HP of damage per attack.
