That "bar" was lowered by the best in the business, the members of the Guild Wars Team, of which none take games and game art so seriously that they can't enjoy a good laugh, too.
I suggest you consider them a role model and not take things so seriously.
If someone entered and did not win, I'm sorry. If somone didn't enter, but think we need to aim for a certain look and feel, I'm sorry, but in any judged event, there will no doubt be things with which one can disagree. I've never seen a diving competition, or a skating meet, or anything in the Olympics, ever, with which I couldn't take some issue. Any judged event by its very nature means that you're going with the judgment of others. In this case, the members of the Development Team for Guild Wars chose an image that someone love, some hate, and some find baffling for its selection.
End of the day, the judges spoke, and I feel the judges were fully and completely entitled to speak. I have no regrets for inviting them to judge the contest connected with the game that they developed. And as I said, I highly doubt that one smile-inducing image has set the pattern for the downfall or the degradation of future contests. Or the downfall of the Western World, either, come to think of it.
