Sailing and boat building

Sounds like a complicated (though neat) concept that would be interesting for an expansion. I have a feeling something like this would take its toll on my graphics card, though...all that water!
Though sea travel always intrigued me, I'm not sure this is something I'd want Guild Wars to do. Not sure it would add too much to the gameplay to just put it all on water. For now I'm content with my jade sea, which is close enough for me!

Funnyman I feel like slapping you hard sometimes...DO you ever thing past the point of the basic idea?
1.take a lot of Programming time
2. complicated
3. can you imagine the lag?
4. this idea is already here somewhere
5. Sea travel would destroy the linear plotline
6. how about we fix the current game before we change this one in a MAJOR way
Ill just stick to my map thank you....

Eh...I don't like the idea, it's perfectly fine how it is...we aren't pirates you know...we're knights and stuff

LOL, thanks for introducing me AJ, and yes I already did post an expansive idea for a sea farring addition.
It is nice to see that other people can imagine the same, I will post a link for anyone who wants to see how the discussion developed and my thoughts on Sea Farring.

You can always expect a ranting fool like Mr.G to show up and give completely pointless dissapprovals, but none of them are true.
Proper visualization of water is already in the game, go to Melandrus Hope in the Kuzick territory and head south east to see the rapid rivers, these things are already capable in the game.
Linear gameplay is one of the weaker parts of an RPG, most advanced RPGs feature some good exploration and non-linear gameplay, non-linear gameplay is what has sold GTA since it came out. Being able to cruise around (in a ship instead of a car) and search for activities or locations of your interest instead of following a train track path is a very.... very valuable game experience which WILL sell games.
As well there are plenty of people who have expressed their dislike of the blocked paths and linear gameplay in Factions, there are people who want exploration. But most of all, doing the same thing over and over is a sure path to failure. Anet will come up with new experiences in each chapter, otherwise they are nothing more than expansions of the same gameplay with new visuals. It can be done, and there is hardly a more enriching experience they can add than obtainable ships and sea exploration.
In my idea I suggested Guild owned ships and free reign to explore where you wish, I think it would be a turning point in the available activities a Guild can experience together, with Guild owned ships (like Guild owned Guild Halls) Guilds would have a new PvP option to explore, but more importantly, they would have a new form of PvE to experience.
P.S. You may be a Knight, but I'm an Assassin, and obviously they could add a new class which fits a sea farring theme with a sea farring chapter. New Warrior armor?, Marine, new Ranger armor?, Corsair.

Well first I would love the abillity to jump with typing /jump in chat.
Mr. G is coming off as the ranting lunatic yes, but some of his points are actually good. This whole concept is depending on the type of sea travel a large open field would kill many peoples graphics cards but taht would not fit in the current gameplay of seperate servers for each area. Also there is already a form of travel. Although it would be interesting if you could do missions and stop at outposts and sail on little sea regions. How would you be able to sail said ship? WASD doesnt seem like it would be very interesting, meaning we'd have to implement new movement systems. Also the battling would be a tricky one.
Overall the idea is very interesting and I would love to see it ingame just many things would have to be done. Just my 2 cents.

What kind of game is GW? I am pretty sure it is the kind of game that is "designed" to grow into new forms of gameplay and additions, which is why we should have stand alone expansions and featured content in each chapter.
Leaving control of your ship in one persons hands is no different than leaving your healing on one, maybe 2 peoples hands, if they decide to neglect their responsibilities then your screwed. Taking out team oriented gameplay because of irresponsible people will make this a solo game, and that shouldn't be done (sept maybe for one chapter). To make it a little more advanced, you could require that certain people man the sails, some have to look out and direct the boat, and another has to steer. But likely you should have some NPC units on your boat handling the upkeep, and it is simple enough for one person to steer the ship.
Sure one person can ruin the experience, just like one person can ruin a mission by picking up a neccessary item and going AFK with it...... or a healer decides he isn't going to heal the party, or your attackers don't attack and you can't kill the 3 monks continually restoring eachother, those are natural pitfalls of team gameplay, and team gameplay is an intregal part of this game. Just because everyone on the boat can't steer it doesn't mean nobody should, it makes it less interesting for everyone and greatly reduces the value of such an addition.
P.S. anyone who thinks GW is ment to stay the way it is, don't buy new chapters, they will all have a new experience in it, hopefully something this spectacular.

yay im a ranting lunatic, i dont have a problem with the idea (after seeing BK's well thought out thread) its Funnyman teands 2 drop these 2 liners all the time....Its my latest pet peeve
Also on the point of linear gameplay, I didnt mean no travel I just meant say traveling striaght from shing jea to Kaining without any sort of plot in between, I like non-linear play but within reason, the main reson Guildwars is so great is it has more of a plot instead of a random series of quests strung together
and you carnt say it was all bad BK one of these points was about you
"4. this idea is already here somewhere"

Well there could be part of the story in a new expantion that an island kingdom could be under attack by uuum... lets say nagas (like ascalon) and u have to do missions to try and save the island country but (like in ascalon) u are over-powered and nead to make a ship and sail to a new country away from the nagas?
