What's the deal with critical hits?
stillarook
Yes, I'm a newbie, but I don't see what's the point in critical hits. Sure it helps you a lot in some skills that helps you evade, but your chances of critical hits are so low it's not even funny!
Horible
Hidden, dont be like that, he already sadi he was new to the game, simply explain it
Critical hit chances increase with every point you put in critical strikes. Im not on Guild Wars atm, so i cant give you the exact amount.

Well, two answers.
1. If you get Critical Hits up to about 14 in PvP, you see a lot of them against players and they charge your batteries too! Ummm, yes, level 14 critical hits and Critical Eye up, and daggers become impressive!
2. Unfortunately, in PvE, your chance of a critical hit drops as the target's level goes above 20. By level 24 to 28, crits don't do much in PvE.

Also each time you hit a critical hit you can gain energy. The amount of energy you get is based on how high your critical hits are, last time I checked I think 8 critical hits give 2 energy each time you hit a critical.

Hidden in the Mist is kind of right...
The OP speaks with an uninformed arrogance that deserves some slapping and sarcasm...
What's the point in critical hits? Their chances of happening is so low it ain't even funny!
You go gal W00T...
The point? Well, you swing at me with no critical hit attribute at all, and I'll swing with my Warrior Primary default at 16 Axe Mastery... I'm pretty sure that I'll kill you outright before you get a chance to hit your escape skill key...
Critical hits help you kill people faster. And Hidden's right, if you're not going to at least ask an informed question, then you're going to get flamed to high heavens... :
13 Critical hits is all I think one needs with 12 Dagger Mastery as a backup... Lots of energy to be had with Critical Eye and Siphon Strength {E}...
Sadly, sins die in 3 seconds or less so you won't get much out of it...

Average dagger damage is 12 vs 60 AL at 12 dagger. Its (17*1.41= ~24) damage on a crit. Yeah, not a huge improvement in raw damage but crits give you a couple things:
A) that tiny extra bit of spike damage should it trigger
B) energy over time
C) triggering crit specific skills
D) use on another weapon type (hammers in particular hurt on a crit)
Crit chance is effected by:
A) relative level
B) weapon mastery
C) critical hits
D) the critical eye skill

Every single primary class has a unique attribute. As a general rule, If you are not using that attribute there is no purpose in playing that class as you are not utilizing the one thing that makes that class unique. Many of a classes skill set are inherently dependent on the utilization of that attribute and for many others an argument could be made for their implied relationship.
If you want to play an assasin but dont see the need for criticals, why not make a warrior and get yourself some better armor so you'll die only once or twice a mission and be less of a heal sponge who dies 4-8x a mish and can never get in a party ? You don't have to use the strength either from the warrior. Afterall there's always tactics... Does a mesmer need fast casting, an elementalist energy storage, is divine favor over rated, is expertise stupid ? =D
That's just my opinion of course. Every situation and build for that situation can vary, but it's rare that I'd be ignoring any classes unique attribute.

Well, I have 14 on critical stries, but even if you put points on critical eye, it's gonna gonna increase by 6 or 7 percent chances. Then it'll only be 20% chance. And that's not a lot.

2 days ago you posted this with a build with 16 in criticals and now there is this post. I strongly suggest that you post less and read more. Everyone likes to help and discuss things but if you are posting builds that you don't know anything about and asking questions about simple obvious concepts of the game, I'm more inclined to lean toward the flame here.
In my opinion, you need to learn more about the game so that you have a grasp of what you are talking about and asking questions about. If nothing else it's a simple courtesy. Seriously, there is a volume of information at your disposal- use it.

No, I like the build. It's just that I don't see critical hits often at all for my assassin.
But is there a way to increase more critical chances besides critical hits and critical eye?

But is there a way to increase more critical chances besides critical hits and critical eye? dagger mastery increase crit chance on dagger weapon as well, same as any other weapon attribute, like Warrior and Ranger as well as the 2 new profession from Nightfall.
You need to know the game more in order to post a build.

The instruction booklet didn't tell me that.

when is the last time i read an instruction booklet? hmm very very very long ago. To know a game, you need to play it. The instruction booklet wont tell you everything, you need to find it yourself, its even on the attribute description.

um, there are resources that can help you out...i believe that there are articles on this very forum that talk about a lot of the things you have and will probably encounter. also, i know that there is a damage and critical hit calculator/equation here. all you have to do is look for it!

Oh yeah, I've seen that. Very useful. So now that this question is solved, I need help with more.
I understand that some people have ngihtstalkers on their chests and leg, but I don't really know why. Can someone give me a basic tip why?

12 Weapon Mastery is 17.4% Critical Strikes. Add 13% from 13 Critical Strikes and you got 30% chance to Crit Strike. On my Yanssassin that would be a total of : 21.6% + 14 % = 35.6 % ( 15 dagger 14 crit strikes )
Looks alot better doesn't it?

if i'm not mistaken, when an enemy swings at you [say it's a warrior for purposes of an example], the game calculates where the damage will land/how damage is distributed. the chest area has the greatest percentage of damage hitting it [~37% i think] while the feet is ~12%. so when you have a nighstalkers guise and are attacking, you get base 70 + 15=85 armor to soak up the damage that hits your chest area ~37% of the time.
i think that your question is discussed here in the forums as well. the infor is out there, you just have to be a bit more patient and look for it!

About the critical hit thing, I was told by someone that you always get a 20% base chance to crit against someone of the same level. This is completely speculative and he offered no reason or evidence, so take it with a grain of salt.
And also, yes the game calculates a percentage of you getting hit in a certain area. The chest and legs are the highest, at 37.5% and 25% respectively. However, non-projectile offensive spells will ALWAYS hit your chest, for instance Deathly Swarm. So that's why you see Nightstalker's on Chest and Feet, as you have a 62.5% chance of getting hit in one of those two areas.

Wow, you guys are very informative. So if you have a critical while using a skill, does it add up to the attack skill that you are using?
JGaff
Don't forget that when chasing someone, blows to the back seem to always result in critical hits for damage. Remember that too when you are gaining back energy and beating the hell out of a target at the same time

stillarook
Where did you learn that? I know you can't find that in regular faq.
Sinborn
I don't rely on hitting period. I consider all landed hits to be a grace period before the inevitable blind or guardian. Criticals? What are these criticals you speak of?

IMO Critical strikes are a good thing.
With 15 Critical and 14 dagger, you have 37% to hit a Critical hit, correct? Well That doesnt seem like much.
To put it into fractions though, its more like 2/5 attacks will land a critical hit. So, you see those attack skills you should be chaining? The ones with mega damage input? Yeh, imagine them doing a critical hit? Your HotO is now doing 120 per hit, not 60. So thats around 240 from 1 HotO.
Sinborn, that's why you gank people, to stop them even getting a guardian out. Its a 1 second cast, easily interuptable, and if you have something like the yanssassin build they wont be able to get ANY spells out before your out of there.
