What skills are immediately useful for assassins at the beginning of the game in factions?
mega_jamie
Your healing skill is a good one, you also wanna buy yourself a decent combo set of skills, maybe a teleport skill recall or return would be good, and then maybe a couple of skills from your secondary.
So close to the start of the game, aim for the combo which ends with the enemy bleeding and deepwounded for a nice kill. That tactic is good, but wont, on its own, get you too far past Shing Jea

The ones they give you at the start.
Until you are ready to take on the first mission you should not need to Buy any skills. But after that you need to get the skills that would allow you to perform as an assassin should, aka HIT AND RUN. I don't remember exactly whats available, dash and Vipers defense are and should work for you until you get to kaineng center. The key is to realize that an assassin is a hit and run expert and work your skill set around that.
And don't always listen to everybody else! There are way to many people in this game who think that if you don't have the same cookie cutter build as everyone else you don't know what your doing. Don't listen to those people, experiment and learn from your mistakes and you will be a better player for it!

Its mostly the former that is present in PvE nowadays which is part of the reason I dont join complete PUGs anymore.
Personally, If your skill set is bad in a PUG pve mission or something I'll just suggest something better to you and go along my way. There are two "Rage" moments for me: 1) Even though I dont care so much about your skills in the normal play, I WILL get really angry with you if you advertised as something specific needed in a farming group or something, and bring complete trash..FARRR too many times In PvE Tombs for example I've advertised for "Healing monks" and the first thing the monk in the mission does is cast Reversal of Fortune or Gaurdian...or advertised for a MM and the first thing I see the necro do is stick SS on an enemy.. 2) If you do something stupid like Leeroy and get yourself killed, I go on a 1 Strike basis. I'll rez you, slap your hand and tell you you are wrong, and continue on, second chance...if you do it again or act like a tard about it..Your chance is over...Rage.

Please don't use Viper's Defense in a PUG, sure it poisons the enemy, but it teleports you to a random location, and everytime I've used it it puts me in another group of enemies :/

I'm not sure I'm going to like hit and run tactics. Not my style. Is this how this class is going to play out for me?
Dawgboy
Yup, that's how it plays out. Ever try a warrior? They are a lot easier to learn and you won't have to hench the entire game like you would with an assasin. 90% of the 'sins I've seen in pick-up groups are suicidal.

As an Assassin, the only thing you should be doing is
Warp In
Pull of your combo
Warp back into the back lines.
Heal if needed/Regen
^Repeat

^ This only presents a problem with a pure Henchie group as they will follow you mindlessly for now. So there's nobody at the back waiting do dump healing/purges on you if thngs went badly.
That said, Hit & Run is the best for small to solo play. In a 4+ group of real people, (or at least 4 real people in a biggger hench group), You can move around and pick off the targets of choice: healers, interrupters, rezers, MM's. Pop in, lay into them and withdraw while your friends draw aggro.
My A/R... not the best combo :/ I'm still fiddling with the skills. A/W with AoE Axe and focusing on Crits... Yeah, I'll see.
Best of luck 'Sin.

I played with A/W
Jagged Strike or Disturbing Stab
Fox Fangs
Watch Yourself! +20 armor
Death Blossom (AoE damage, use it well)
Wild Blow, stance denial, cheap for assassins
Shadow Refuge
Twisting Fangs
Res or something
Assassins use mostly spike damage skills so pick your own *soft* target like some caster. Look your surroundings. If enemies are coming for you, RUN! After you have broke your aggro, look mainly for soft targets and spike them to the mists! Don't let them rape you. Avoid damage.
