Interrupting Question
Insert Cool Name Here
I have recently found the Mesmer is my new favorite class. I started one about 2 weeks ago and have been playing it exclusively, foresaking all my other characters. I have tried all the different builds and I find interrupts the most interesting and confusing. When I interupt, I sometimes hit the wrong interrupt. ie-someone used a signet and hit a spell interupt. I know that this is something that I will get better with in time. Can someone please explain the differences between skill , spell, and action for me?
The three catagories are:
SKILL
Cry of Frustration - Spell
If target foe is using a skill, that foe and nearby foes are interrupted and suffer 10-37 damage
Psychic Distraction {Elite} - Spell
All of your other skills are disabled for 8 seconds. If target foe is using a skill, that skill is interrupted and disabled for 5-11 seconds.
ACTION
Leech Signet - Signet
Interrupt target foe's action. If that action was a spell, you gain 3-13 Energy.
Complicate - Spell
Interrupt target foe's action. If that action was to use a Signet, it and all other Signets are disabled for 1-13 second.
SPELL
Power Leak - Spell
If target foe is casting a spell, the spell is interrupted and your target loses 10-22 Energy.
Power Block {Elite} - Spell
If target foe is casting a spell, that spell is interrupted. The interrupted spell and all spells of that attribute are disabled for 3-13 seconds for that foe.
Power Leak - Spell
If target foe is casting a spell, the spell is interrupted and your target loses 10-22 Energy.
Power Spike - Spell
If target foe is casting a spell, the spell is interrupted and target foe takes 20-86 damage.
Signet of Disruption - Signet
If target foe is casting a Spell, the Spell is interrupted and that foe suffers 10-43 damage. If that foe is Hexed, Signet of Disruption can interrupt any non-Spell skills.
Power Return - Spell
If target foe is casting a Spell, that Spell is interrupted and target foe gains 10-6 Energy.
Power Drain - Spell
If target foe is casting a spell, the spell is interrupted and you gain 1-25 Energy.
Power Leech {Elite} - Hex Spell
If target foe is casting a Spell, that Spell is interrupted and for 10 seconds whenever that foe casts a Spell, you steal up to 1-6 Energy from that foe.

Pick Me
I'll try to help you on this.
Skill - any true skill or signet or spell used
Spell - any spell used; does not work against signets or true skills
My definition of a true skill is any non-spell or signet skill used; such as Sprint, Spirit Ritual summoning, stances, etc.
Action - attacking, casting a spell, using a skill, using a signet. I don't know if moving is considered an action or not.
Vampiric Touch/Bite is classified as a true skill.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Pick Me that does clear it up a little. What about Ritualist Spells? like:
Weapon of Warding - Weapon Spell
For 5-10 seconds, target ally has a Weapon of Warding that grants target ally +2-4 Health regeneration and a 50% chance to "block."
I can't seem to block these with "Spell" block skills. I seem to have trouble in this class in particular. I can eat eles or necros for breakfast!

Just a little nitpick, but 'Sprint' is a Stance which means impossible to interupt. (as are all stances)

Hmmm... good question.
They may be classified as a "skill". From my understanding, Binding Rituals are "skills", and Weapon spells are not enchantments. I've never been interupted when I use Weapon of Warding, so, try casting Cry of Frustration.

By any chance are you trying to interrupt Jade Brotherhood Ritualists? I'm almost certain that any spell based interrupt works on Weapon spells, the difference is they use 'Tranquil was wotsit' which makes them un-interruptable.
As for defintions. Spells are anything with the word 'spell' in them.
Skills is anything in the game that can be put on a skillbar, just because it has no cast time (ie Sprint) doesn't mean its not a skill, you just can't interrupt it.
Actions i think would include attacking, in the same way that Wailing Weapon interrupts attacking actions. It would also include skills (and therefore spells).

Now that I think about it I think you are right they did have a spell on that made them uninterruptable, but if they had a spell like that on wouldn't it give a warning like spellblock says"This spell can not be used because of spell blocker"? EvilSod-So by your definition I should be able to interrupt anything(except spirits, stances, and if caster has uniterruptable spell on) with one of these 3 spells:
SKILL
Cry of Frustration - Spell
If target foe is using a skill, that foe and nearby foes are interrupted and suffer 10-37 damage
ACTION
Leech Signet - Signet
Interrupt target foe's action. If that action was a spell, you gain 3-13 Energy.
Complicate - Spell

Sound right?

Only spellbreaker and obsidian flesh put up those warnings, and that's because the spell cast itself is failing. An interrupt blocked by Mantra or Tranquil fails silently.
Cry and Leech Signet will interrupt binding rituals, bow attacks, and anything else with a cast time. I won't speak of Complicate because I haven't used it enough to be sure.

It's fairly simple:
Actions = Skills + Attacks, movement is not considered an action
Skills = Well... your skills, every single one of them. Spells, signets, stances, etc. Anything that goes on your skill bar is a skill.
Spell = A kind of skill. Spells include: (plain) spells, hexes, enchantments, item spells, weapon spells, wards, well spells.
Interrupts that interrupt:
-spells can only be used to interrupt this special kind of skills
-skills can be used to interrupt any skill with cast time
-actions can interrupt any skill with cast time or any attack

Complicate interrupts actions just as it states, that little bonus about signets is what happens if you just happen to interrupt a signet.
Mesmer Interrupts that can interrupt actions (any skill with an activation time, and attacking) are:
Leech Signet
Complicate
The only interrupt that can 'specifically' interrupt attacks is Clumsiness.
Interrupts that can interrupt skills are:
Signet of Disruption (conditional)
Cry of Frustration
Psychic Distration {E} (+ Blackout effect)
Interrupts that can interrupt spells are:
Power Block {E}
Power Leak
Power Spike
Power Return
Power Drain
Power Leech
Also, to easily know which interrupts can interrupt particular skills, every skill has a classification that is stated at the beginning. That is what you use when interrupting, example - Hex Spell, Bow Attack, Weapon Spell,

I made this little video so you can see how complicate and leech signet can interrupt normal attack (without using a skill). Irresistible blow (attack skill) was interrupted too but it wasn't the primary goal.

Don't bother with the build, it's just not one (hopefully) !

If you're fast, you can interrupt attack skills (especially rangers and hammer warriors), though about halfway through the bar charging up your interrupt will silently fail even though you got it in fast enough. The attack has already hit, so interrupting it does nothing.
