Nightfall Bonus Pack, Preorder or not?
Draxanoth
Has anyone else noticed the status of the nightfall bonus pack has changed from a free preorder bonus item to at least an extra 5 bucks? Originally it said it was a preorder bonus for dropping a down payment for the actual game, now they've changed it so it's an extra expense. Kinda sneaky if you've already preordered the normal version online.... Might as well spend 10 bucks for a char slot online and save the extra 10 it'll cost in gas.

Actually, it never claimed to be a preorder package, that's just what EB labelled it as. ANet has simply classified it as a nightfall prerelease (as in before release) package It's status with regard to whether or not it is consider a preorder is still a little bit cloudy. If someone from ANet could clear this up, it would be greatly appreciated. I fully intend to buy it myself, but I'm sure there's more than a few people who want to know if the amount they've paid for it will be deducted from their cost of the final release.
gamecube187
Well, from seeing those two pages, it sure seems like the preorder will cost more and not be deducted, and I will buy the preorder either way, but it would be nice if some Arena Net employee like gaile or someone could clear this up.
Also, anyone notice how it says "Pre-Release Ships 10/26/06" right next to the price and "add to cart" button? Is that basically confirmation that nightfall releases late october/early november? I sorta hope it is, but then I also want it to come out like a half-a-month to a month later, enspecially if there is going to be a one or two day event thing for the pre-release! (isn't that how long the tengu one was?) It would be about the middle to endish of the marching season and during the marching season, I have almost no free time! Then again they could also just make the event a week long, or longer....but I doubt they would do something like that just for one person...

Is this only available across the pond? I can't seem to find Nightfall anywhere on-line for over here, let alone that pre-order pack.

Maybe it's just a typo, but the blurb for the starter kit one says:
I thought the pre-(whatever) came with both?
Quote:
Purchase Guild Wars: NightFall with the Nightfall Starter Kit and receive: a Guild Wars "Play Now" key for a 10-hour/14-day trial of Guild Wars and Guild Wars Factions; Guild Wars Nightfall Bonus Key, providing one additional character slot for a Guild Wars Nightfall account, as well as your choice of one of two exclusive items for the new professions—a Firey Sunspear of Shelter for the Paragon and an Icy Soulbreaker of Enchanting for the Dervish; Mini strategy guide, concept art, screenshots, in-game renders of characters and items, preview trailer, wallpapers, lore, quick reference card, music, and more! |

the GW site still has both and i will believe the GW site before a proven wrong many times game site
Draxanoth
It's probably correct either way you look at it. You can probably get both items, but only one per character. Didn't they do it that way with the original release of GW?
CK0
I knew it was fishy when they don't have a pre-order, but now instead a pre-release. And people thought they were getting a "bonus" slot for free.
Ha!
Ha!
Trunce
If I have the money (Hahahah) I'll defiantley pre-order it. I need factions, first. -_-''

also there are conflicts between what the Anet site says and the non Anet store information.
i will wait until they both say the same thing before making any conclusions on it.
EternalTempest
Best Buy charged $9.99 for both the GW and GWF pre-order kits and didn't tell you to bring them back in or the reciet to get $10 off retail >< when you buy it.
I would hold of on judgement on if Anet started charging for the kit or if it's the retailers based on how other outlets are handling it.
It may be true but not enough evidence or any responses yet from Gaile/Alex/Patrick to know this early.
If it is ture, your paying for a slot upgrade that comes with some cool promo stuff as well as some special weapons in game.

My first post ever
Anyway, I was over at gwonline.net reading through a Gaile chat log dated Aug 9 and I found this:
-notice she says set of items, so you should get both the spear and the scythe.

Not entirely on-topic, but in case anyone is confused about the slots:
Note* if you get the pre-release package; you get the third slot when you activate your nightfall retail key

But do we get any bonus items if we only get the ordinary preorder? I'm not interested in more slots.
Mordakai
I believe the pre-release replaces the pre-order.
Although that Gaile quote just confused me more...
Stores will choose:
?!?
Hmmm, last time Gaile said that Anet made no money off of the "pre-order." I wonder if that policy changed.
Still, even if Anet is making money, it seems strange that the store gets so much control over Anet's product. All in all, seems like a bad situation for Joe Consumer. We have to shop around and find the best deal, and hope we don't get screwed in the end.

as noted at the gamestop store the Nightfall for 49.99 you can preorder has no bonus items at all (including slot)
all you are doing is reserving a copy of the game.

Its funny how everyone jumped into conclusions that the pre release bonus pack was the same as pre orders. And blind leading the blind when several other forums members echoed that it was the same as the pre-order.
Pre-release Bonus packs sell you an extra slot and its own bonus items and preview of the game. You will still need to Preorder Nightfall SE/CE if you want the full game. The only down side to this is that if you bought the Pre-release bonus pack and feel that you dont like it, its unlikely you will be able to do anything else with the pre-release pack (Nightfall content for pre-release bonus will cease after release and Nightfall characters will be locked possibly) This Anet fails to tell everyone.
There will also likely also to be another set of events catered specially for those who buy the pre-release bonus pack and a seperate one for the pre-order to encourage players to get both.
Now the problem lies in it that there no harm done if Nightfall was the best thing since sliced bread, but if you didnt like Nightfall for whatever reasons after buying and playing the pre-release pack and choose not to pre-order/buy Nightfall, i wonder about the fate of your created characters in Nightfall and the support you will likely get for it from Anet....

example gamestop has it for 54.99 plus tax/s&h
i have found no store so far offering a preorder with the bonus items at 10 dollars or any other price.
i have found a non bonus item preorder for 49.99 however

You can bet Best Buy will sell the Pre-release bonus pack for $10. They sold the Factions pre-order disc for $10, and left it up to the customer to fend for themselves in getting a copy of the release. It wasn't a "reservation" in any sense of the word. This is perfect for them (and might have been implemented especially for big box stores like Wal-mart and Best Buy).
I'm hoping I can find a dealer who will offer a discount for buying the pre-release, although I'm not optimistic. If someone does find such a place, I'd hope they'd post it here!
gene terrodon
My conclusion is that with the pre-release pack you get items AND a half price extra character slot.
Thats a deal to me, being a character slot is $10.

Mordakai to answer your first part of your question, its simply reading and comprehension. I wont say more being a non native english speaker myself.
Making that extra "5 bucks" is not the focus at all, the main objective will always be to convince you to buy the main game.
As for comparing fates of toons in the pre-order of factions and pre-release bonus pack, the pre-release bonus pack is sold as a seperate retail package and non-refundable while if you pre-ordered factions in the past, you can still get your money back if you didnt like the game and cancel the pre-order.
That is the main difference.
Edit for spelling

If that's not what you meant to say, I apologize. (It's still a crazy idea, though! )
Out of curiosity, I checked the Best Buy site. Nightfall isn't even listed, so who knows how they'll treat it? Maybe they'll charge a higher price up front, but then discount it from the retail release. I don't want to give Best Buy a bad name based on my assumptions.
There used to be a guy who worked at Best Buy on this site, I wonder if he knows anything about this?

i actually went back to the official GW announcement and it looks as though (for now) retailers are bundling two separate retail products.
the prerelease retail product
the full game product.
the prelelease makes no mention of playing the game with it but states the prerelease pack is a first look at the game with some nice extras.
when Anet releases the retail prerelease product i would not be at all surprized to see it being sold separately at 10 dollars as it is being sold now for only 5 dollars extra with the game

Horseman Of War
well hey you all can do what you want, but Ive always gotten all preorder packages and this time im getting the CE no matter how long i have to wait...
and the preorder items will be added to the list of preorder items you already recieve... so getting the pre-items, and going into ANY character, new or old- you type /preorder and boom: there is your War Pick, your Censors Icon, you Canthan Targe, your Poisonous Dragon Fangs of Mastery, your Spitbinder, and soon, your sunspear and icy scythe.
like i said your existing characters will be able to get them once you have the code added to your account.

There will be in-game weapons and one (1) bonus slots with the Prerelease Bonus Pack of Nightfall due for release in September.
It's been confirmed by Anet that if you buy the Prerelease Bonus Pack, and Nightfall, you will get a total of 3 slots if merging, or 5 slots if a new account. (You won't be able to use the bonus slot in the prerelease without buying a full version of Nightfall).
The following is conjecture:
I don't think we'll be getting any additional slots with the CE (that is, additional beyond the slots we'd get anyway from the regular edition). The reason is, becuase they're already offering a bonus slot with the pre-release.
I, too, hope the Nightfall CE comes with a unique mini-pet. I missed out on the mini-Dragon, so I hope Anet makes the bonus pet a consistent thing.
(I don't see why they wouldn't, it's a good way for them to sell more CEs).
I'm guessing (repeat, guessing) the CE will have:
- art book
- Nightfall music CD (Jeremy Soule, of course)
- mousepad (or some other gimick)
- Special Dance emote(for Paragon and Dervish only?)
- Mini-pet (please, please, please!)
/ends speculation. Not responsible for rumors started from said speculation.
poozle
Well, so far we've had a headset and a mouse mat in CEs, the trouble is I can't think of anything else in the sort of price range which would be suitable for a package, I agree on the rest though, and hopefull some more cool reusable stickers I think a minipet would be cool though.
