Why Are There Gold Items?

green weapons are a "shortcut" to perfect modded items with a decent requirement.
While they are widely available, usually at affordable prices, they cannot be modded, not salvaged, and always have the same weaponskin. Gold weapons however can come in any skin, can be modded just the way you want it, and can come in any requirement (for max dmg it ranges from 7 to 13 though).

Now think of the definition of the word "rare". As long as there are greens and golds, golds will always be rarer. Greens aren't always the way you want them to be because each different green has its own mods and cannot be changed. Golds will always be superior to greens and their prices will always be higher. Imagine if there weren't any "rare items".
Gold items can be the most versatile but a chance for wanted modifiers is very rare. They also have skins which don't exist as greens. Couple examples:
Gold eternal shield
16 armor, req 8 strength or tactics
-2 physical while in a stance
-2 physical while enchanted
Gold artifacts
+12, req 8 death magic
+1 death magic (chance: 20%)
Halves skill recharge of death magic spells (chance: 20%)
+12, req 8 curse magic
+15 energy, -1 energy regeneration
Halves skill recharge of curse magic spells (chance: 20%)
Gold wand
11-22 dmg, req 8
+5 energy while above 50% health
+15 energy, -1 energy regeneration
As far as I know, these can only exist as rare gold drops.
