I've been trying to play the whole day and all I've got is a "Connecting..." message and a big Moby Dick swimming in the background
First I thought Anet servers were down or something but I can't find anyone with the same problem.
I'm desperate because I don't know what to do!

If you're running PeerGuardian2, shut it off.

Same here.
After logging out 13 hours ago because of the in game message spamming "new build available", restarting, updating, automatic restart and telling my firewall (ZoneAlarm) to allow execution of the new gw.exe... all i get is the green screen "Connecting" that changes into a error code 53 after several minutes.
Mailed support and all i got was the automated reply.
I ran the netinfotool and guess what?

hah, busted!!
So i attached the complete outputfile of the tool to my support question, and all i got was another macro reply asking me again to tell them my ISP, connection, if i have a firewall or router, what model, if its configured correctly etc.
Yesterday i went to bed, figuring any problem a big company as anet has should be resolved by the morning, i was wrong...
So what i did next is check here, to see if i am the only one with this problem... And i'm not.

And I bet our ISPs has nothing to do between them because I'm in Spain and you're in Holland so it's not a problem of us
I haven't been able to log since Friday 1pm (CMT) and I can't log yet today
I'm missing a cool weekend of chest runs because this RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing error.
Since I logged out I haven't installed any program and I don't have any firewall or even anti-virus so my computer is exactly the same than when I was able to log.
Tell me if you get a decent support answer or if you figure out a solution

Proof that my ports 80 and 6112 are open, but those ports of Anet's ip 222.231.12.41 are "down". I wouldnt be able to connect to _any_ server using those ports if one of those ports were blocked on my side.
As he's having the same problem.

Actually the reason because I don't have any of those is because I just formatted my hard drive 4 days ago and I haven't got time to install almost anything and since my freetime is so short that I don't browse the web or download any program I don't feel like I need any protection. The only thing I've done in the past 4 days is to play GuildWars
I usually have installed NOD32 as my antivirus and Comodo as my firewall

My neighbour is able to log into the game, but he is with a differant provider so there is no way to say for sure that his path to and from the Anet servers are the same. He's a bit of a weirdo, so he wont let me check with the tool.
btw, i install a virusscanner (NOD32 before i even put the networkcable into the back of my system if i need to reinstall everything. Then i update NOD. And only then will i start windows update.

this is getting very annoying, I'm gonna sleep at a friend's home and will play gw there as he can log w/o probs
I think this shit may be fault of the last patch and I've put my hopes on solving the problem after they get it back to normal

Think i got it to work. Reinstalled from CD and managed to log in. Proofs there was nothing wrong with my connection. (20 minutes ago before i reinstalled i could not log in.)
Somehow Fridays update, corrupted my install.
Started with -image switch now so i dont have to wait for shit to dowload whenever i enter some "new" area. That looks noobish, even with my Protector of Tyria Tittle ^_^

It worked Xanatas, thanks a lot
I didn't even have to download shit because I went to my friend's pc and copied his Gw.DAT file and used it myself
It works perfectly so my Friday's update was corrupted as well as your was
The weird thing is that I unistalled and reinstalled Guild Wars Saturday morning thinking this could solve the problem but it didn't, so I never thought a corrupted update could have happened twice but shit it happened!
Thanks a lot for your help!

There were 2 updates on Friday/Saturday. The first one corrupted my install. You probably reinstalled between update 1 and 2.
2 fixed it, if you didnt install 1 yet.
Thats my guess.

I had a new internet system installed some weeks ago by the telephone company (in order to enable internet TV) and this required a new protocol, and this meant that my old router, which served as my firewall, could not be used. Being impatient, I just continued for the time being without this router, that is, without a firewall. Fortunately my antivirus was active. Within a half hour my antivirus reported two attempts to place backdoor trojans on my computer.
At the very least you need a daily updated anti-virus and a simple simple firewall that blocks all attempts to make a connection to your computer from the outside (only connections that should be allowed are the ones that are initiated from your computer). This simple firewall will not allow you to fileshare with others, if that is what you want, but will suffice for playing GW and just about all other purposes.
I am using an anti-virus that is free and found on the internet (Antivir). Can't say how good it is, use it at your own risk. But except for it's nightly database updates (which tend to minimize GW) I never notice it is present.

My router is a firewall itself as it has all ports closed but the ones I've been opening manually
I know viruz can be very tricky and might use some ports I've enabled but it's very rare to find with those random scans
