Utilizing Your Money To The Fullest.

Money is often hard to come by in Guild Wars. There's a handful of lucky people, a handful of farmers, and a handful of Night Hawks who find it relatively simple to make money. But it takes money to make money, I've noticed, and there's almost never enough. You see people prancing around in Obsidian armor and you think they're rich, but in all honestly 70% of them probably used 1500k on the armor and are now running around with collector's swords modded with imperfect mods.
I've never had more than 200k in all my GW life. I've played since the release of Prophecies, only to always stay poor. My gameplay experience has always been fun, I've been able to prove myself a useful player and make many friends. My list actually has people I remember adding. I however, have always been strapped for cash. I always attempt playing the market, but when I think I'm getting a good deal, it ends up the price has lowered, and I find myself lost in the abyss.
Money-making is so woeful. It really shouldn't be so influential, but in an MMO it's more or less impossible for it to not be.
I'll cut to the chase. How can I use my money to the fullest? How can I make more? I'm currently dragging myself along with 118k, attempting to farm golds with chest runs this weekend, and sell unidentified golds for 500 extra gold off my key prices. It won't be enough, though, and I only have so long. What can I do in the long run?

Paradox.
I suggest sticking with Chest runs but, instead of selling the unidentified gold items. Have people pay you to identifiy them. That way you get money, and the item back.

Ahh, like in real life, money burns a hole in my pocket. Everytime I work up to a good amount of gold, I go shopping. Now at times, I can set my sights on something particular I want, like say a certain 15k set I want. I will save up for a piece or two, and get it, then save up for another piece, get it. FoW armor is just way out of my reach. I know I probably could save up for it, even if it would take many months, I just don't want to.
Other than FoW, I see no real reason to horde plat, though. There is no uber-expensive items I would want, I'm not into pissing contests. Yeah, I want my characters to look good, so I do like the occasional rare skin, or sweet-looking green, or some 15k armor, but not for bragging rights, just because I want my character to look the way I want them to look. 14^50 is just as good and effective as 15^50, remember that.
Being smart with money is as simple as knowing what exactly you're wanting to buy with that money and just saving up for it. There are a few slow, but surefire ways to make money, definately. Farming, "power-selling", and various services all reap decent rewards, but honestly simply 'being lucky' is the best way to make money. I know that seems like a cop-out, but really, you could spend days, sometimes weeks making the same amount of plat with proven methods as you could with one damn good drop. I hate to say it, but that one drop could happen while you're actually having fun, too.
Noting that, just know the market. Know the prices things go for and you should be good. You don't necessarily need a huge chunk of money to make money, either. Just go kill things, do what the game is designed to do, and you will find that in time, you will be making more than enough dough.
P.S. Chest farming this weekend is definately something I would suggest doing.

Well, I'd have to respectfully disagree with the above poster. I've gone thru 200 Kurzick keys thus far this weekend chest hunting, and I've found nothing yet that will recoup me the gold i've invested in those keys. For me, that's ok, as I do have some gold accumulated and am just trying to beef up my Treasure Hunter title.
I would agree, however, that luck has to be on your side. I've been playing GW since day 1 and just a few months ago I was hobbling along at somewhere under 100k always, scratching for gold to be able to get things I needed. The way to get gold for me was to ruthlessly hunt down those greens that people are dying to have. They don't cost money to hunt down like those golds, and you can usually sell the more coveted ones in the main cities within just a few minutes.
I got no argument when I fairly recently sold the Vera for 90k, or the Kaolin Domination staff for 100k+, the people that wanted those items just wanted them right then and there, and those kind of infusions of gold help alot obviously.
Good luck!

imperial sanctum is way better for chest runs. I've already got a req 8 air wand 10/10 with armor +5 and perfect enchanting mod, and a 20/20 dagger tang.
everything up to that point in the chests is guaranteed crap.

everything up to that point in the chests is guaranteed crap. So a req. 10 Platinum Bow, 15^50, +30 health is crap? Chest outside Cavalon on my way to Aspenwood. Pulled a req. 8 Amber bow, similiar stats, heading to Amatz Basin. Then there's the 15/-10 Oni Blade that popped from a chest during the defenders of the forest quest. Yeah, real crap.

We're not gonna talk about the 15^50 req 9 Gothic Sword I found during a chest run in Melandru's Hope..

The best way to save money is..To never have more than 2k on each character.Everytime you have more than 2k dump your money in your storage. And NEVER take any money from storage unless you're buying something that you are sure you can sell for higher.
That's what I did to get my fissure armor =)
Oh and a tip..always identify any white item that sells for more than 50g at merchant.Their value increases by up to double original price!

I find it easy to get money, its really not so hard, farm FoW, UW, Elona, Oro.
Invest like 50k into a Necro or a Ranger, and you will find it will repay itselt wery quickly.

Farm hard when a new green comes out. Don't save any for yourself. Sell them all. In a few weeks you can buy one for at least half of what you sold them for.

If there was a trader npc it wouldn't be so hard to make money. I can't stand sittin there spamming WTS>> god it's so annoying I feel like a robot. So I sell my gold items to the merchant for the 300g and move on. I don't find money a big problem as anything expensive is just for looks. Eventually your gonna want to look good though and I wish there was a trader npc..

my lame tip:
i never had money.. EVER! But then i started to put money into storage, every time i got 250g, i put it into storage. It sounds lame and i dont know how it helped but now ive got my second set of 15k and im on the way up.
example - You go and do a quest you come back to town sell up and hey you've got 805g wow! you go straight to storage and deposit 750g ... and boom! Your on the way to mega bucks.. well not quite but you catch my drift.
i worked for me.
hope it helps

I am not rich, currently I have about 40plat (saving up for my rits 15k armor)....I do the quests with ALL of my characters...along the way I kill things....I get either an item or gold.....when I get to the next town I sell the items.
I put everything over 1plat in storage (unless I am skill capping and need another sig).....so far my characters have the armor they want (my rit and mes are still working for their end game armors).
I have saved every collectable item and traded for new weapons.....(still have 70 plague idols burning a hole in my rits storage).....I check the websites for the collectors so I can get the new weapons....
I have a few green items, I traded them for ones I got along the way (still keep getting daggers even though I dont have any assassin characters primary or secondary)....when I have the weapons and armor I like I see no need to have loads of cash.
I use keys when I get them and get keys from the kurzick equipment things or luxon totems.....( I am still doing quests with my characters......)..
I see no need to amass a fortune in game....I have saved materials all along the way so I have them for new armors/weapons.....what else do you need money for?????????? but thats just me, content with what I have.

hm, i never held more than 1k on any char. So that stops you spending really, except to get armor that you need. Then with the money i got keys to chest run, sold the items, millionnaire. I think chests are really the way to go nowadays. Also being the first to farm anything, when nightfall is out, find something fast! and farm till you cant farm any more.
Loki Seiguro
well believe it or not you dont have to farm or do chest runs.
money isnt as hard to come by as you think. just go through the game pick up every drop and sell them to merch later and also remeber to collect crafting materials as well becuase it would save tyou a whole lot of money later instead of having to buy mats from mech or other people. and try not to buy any and everything you see that you like. dont be afraid to use max dmg collector items or non golds (its not like antyone knows what color weapon yoyu are using uinless its a green)
set goals for you self i.e fow armor, 15k armor or some weapon and most likly by the time you have saved up enough money the prioce of that green might have dropped
you never know

Chest running is no way to earn cash. Say you run Nephui. A Canthan key costs 450. 100 keys is 45,000. For that price how many sellable items (or mods) can you except to drop?
A lot of the stuff you get will be Koi sceptres and offhands and other worthless stuff. Even when you do get a rare weap, what are the chances of getting a perfect or perfect mod? You will come out losing money or just breaking even unless you are really really lucky.
The only real way to earn money is to farm the hell out of known farming areas. Unfortunately, farming isn't as lucrative or easy as it use to be a year ago or even 8 months ago. Ah...the glory days of -1 energy/hit Protective Bond, no scatter AOE, and uber Ether Renewal. No nasty scarabs in Prophets Path, and no fall off in the quality of drops even after you farmed an area a thousand times.

Anyone have tips on stuff to try and buy? Like weapon mods, globs of ecto, shards etc. Like prices to buy then to sell for?
Mo Joe Joe Joe
I strongly recommend bringing keys EVERYWHERE that the keys cost 400 or more. Some say that you will not recoup that cost. But I have far exceeded benefitted beyond my key investment. The main difference may be that I do not chest run or overly farm any area. But as I progressed each of my characters I always pack some keys.
Vermilion Okeanos
Buying keys and using them is like going into a casino gambling.
You never know if you are going to win, and when you do win, you might have spend more money than what you have won.
Better question would be... Are you feeling lucky?
In my opinion, making money and pick out the good price items are the best way to obtain what you desire.
And of course, to not feel poor at all is to not be one bit greedy.

Don't waste money on low end keys. Only buy keys for chests that qualify for high end chests for the title.
Know your prices and watch your chat window, many times I've picked up something and quickly flipped it for an easy and quick profit. Keep a list of things you're selling in a text file, whenever in a town etc. post a couple things even if only there a minute or two. If your prices match the market you just need to find a buyer, easier to do so making the odd post in various areas rather than standing in one place trying to flog things for sale all day long.
Pick up and sell everything, don't bother with salvaging or identifying materials etc until you get to lvl 20 areas, then salvage and identify everything. I always make more money than spent on kits.
SOLO, SOLO, SOLO as much as you can. Especially in seldom visited areas of the map. Today I probably made about 60-80k which included 2 black dye drops and not a single green.
Been playing this game 6 months and have my 6 characters outfitted very well with about 2 million in storage counting cash, ectos, etc. I find making money pretty easy and I rarely "farm" and never make chest runs (although I always have keys for high-end chests).

meh.. its not easy anymore... i use to do runs bak before factions destroyed my dreams...
my advice to you is when nightfall comes out learn it quick find some leet skins or new greens and sell them overpriced while they are fresh... sometimes you feel bad that you are selling a awsome weapon you could be holding instead of selling it.. but trust me sell it first it only gets cheaper and cheaper later on...
it worked for factions and the deep weapons... it got to the point where i was selling zodiac weapons for 100k + 45e that were imperfect.... made 1000k in 5 hours one night doing that ^_^... it takes some luck and bit of determination..

wow..i use a build for nolani at the gate where the charr are and i open it and use my build 3-5minutes later you get 150-200g after you kill all the char do that for an hour and thats like 2k-2.5k in an hour.

There is at best a slim chance that you will come out ahead in the chest game. At best....
I won't spell it out for you, but what happens when Nightfall comes out ? What is the one thing(s) that everyone will be needing/(wanting) ?
Create a mule and stock up. Factions was very, very good to me this way.
As another poster suggested - get to the greens first and sell fast.
Also running still can be good, just as soloing certain missions is.
This way you'll have enough money to waste on keys....

ya after playing for over a year, Id say i have pretty much everything i need as far as having good max weaons, and max armor for all my characters...
I even have a half dozen max bows that I will use (when i get that pre-order slot with nightfall)
Ironically- my original character is still using a Garboks Cane (mesmer) and that really isnt a good domination wand... its ok... but there are better...
I dont 'farm' like crazy - but I do have 15k armor set on my Warrior, a 15k pimp-coat for my mes, and 15k gloves, legs, and chest on my necro.
I have a real hard time saving anything - i have no patience for TradeWars... and ive ended up selling to merchants or giving away for free a LOT of good items (non-perfects, but still quite good IMO)
I also help my guild buy merchants- bought the weapon merchant myself (doh, pointless!) and I mustve dropped 25k on the skill trainer (meh... is there a real use for this thing lol?)
But even tho I have 15k armor, I really think that I live humbly within the game- I got my armor for a 15^50 axe that someone bought for 100k (i wouldnt ever pay more than 10k for a modless perfect... lol)
My point, (i think), is that for the first few months of playing- even if you are playing 12 hours a day - you really wont get ahead much... especially if you have multiple characters, managing each's "allowance" really cuts into that nice chunk of platinum you have...
My best advice is to NOT sell collector items; save them ALL and get a list online for where to trade them... this way you can get your perfect weapons/etc while you save up for some max armor for all your characters.
ALSO-> Ive had to smack around my guildies a bit on this one: DONT DO DROKS RUN UNLESS YOU DONT HAVE FACTIONS!!!!!! I cannot stress this enough!!! Getting to lions arch is MUCH easier, and you can take the boat directly to KC, where there is max armor (granted, there are some pieces here and there that you might want to be from tyria... such as the brute's helmet) But seriously, even if you are like lvl 5, its going to be much better to pay (if they make you pay) for a run to Lions Arch, then to spend 3k on droks run which equates to 2 pieces of max armor that you have to re-budget.
Now, if i was only this thrifty in real life lol

Here it goes. My way to solve money problems. Farm lots, buy nothing.
My way to get over 100k slowly! lol But honestly if you dont need it dont buy it. Just save all your money, try to sell any high end items you have, find what you need, dont but it unless you have too. (EX: id kits and salvage kits)

My guild was talking about this just last night-> we have decided to save EVERY decent shield, that requires tactics of 10 or less.
I dont know-> considering a LOT of paragons will be p/w and use tactics... they will want some hawt shields, right?
basically, aside from the perpetual sword and axe prices (too much, i use a hammer lol- best hammer is like 25k, best axe is like 100k+++) I really think that a LOT of people will be hunting for the offhand weapon to their spear.
Focus Items and Tactics Shields. Thats what im putting my money on, at least. There gonna be a lot of spear-wielding characters, whihc means a LOT of characters need a perfect offhand... I bet you wroths icon will go back up in price a little (lol)
Anyone object??
EDIT->> Yo, save your spare sigil stones too... maybe even go as far as to buy out the trader@!!!! There will be a lot of new guilds popping up, and unless ANet gives away sigils for free again (pvp weekend: flame of balthazar, for eszmple) then the price at the trader will jump up for quite some time after NFs release... What, a sigil is worth no more than 10k right now, right? sell for 20-25k and make a really good prophet.

What, a sigil is worth no more than 10k right now, right? sell for 20-25k and make a really good prophet.

The paragon has 2 shields tied to their attributes. The only paragons who'd use tactics shields would be those that don't want to spec in those.
Anyway, back to the topic. I'm a R5 treasure hunter and I can vouch that chest farming is profitable. I buy keys in bulk from people in alliances that own towns so I can get them at a discounted price (bulk = 1000+). Then I go out and chest farm. You won't usually find a perfect gold but perfect mods aren't uncommon. A +30 sword pommel sells for about 50k so that pays off for 100 keys already. The double gold weekend increased my wealth by about 800k and that's after spending a couple 100k on unid golds (working on wisdom too).

I find that having one dedicated farming character (in my case my Mesmer), and putting other characters through the game, currently, makes a fair stack of money...
Putting other characters through the game, noth only makes money but accumulates Imperial Commendations/Equipment Requisitions/Luxon Totems, so Salvage Kits are all free for the farmer to use... I have just discovered a good solo farming build for my Mesmer...so Jade Brotherhood Knights are now my best friends! I don't do chest runs myself since a) i'm NOT lucky and b) unless something drops a key for me keys are such a waste of money....considering my luck!
Another good use of money is to not spend it. Collectors Armor & Weapons FTW! (at least until I can afford the armor I want).

god i wish i invested in ectos... or atleast i wish i didn't liquidate them...they were down to 4k each and i sold em all off a few weeks later they are up to 8k a pop i was like NOOOOOOOO!... life sucks when ur investments go wrong...
which brings me to my next point... lineage 2 has a lottery system which i think sucks... i know its ripping off of something lame as neopets but a in game stock market would own.. i'd invest and manage my portfolio day and night... w00t w00t to striking it rich the lucky way ... nothing better than legal gambling..

Buy low sell high the "dummy" way man.
Normally I have one account in Kaineng Center, another in Lion's Arch or Droknar's Forge. If I had an extra account, I'd use them to patrol all 3 towns, but sadly I don't
However it doesn't require 2 accounts, you can warp back and forth from one of those towns and look for people wanting to buy something and another dude selling the same thing.
Also never buy those high end gold items, stick with cheap greens that are cheap and have decent stats, or Collector's, crafters for those rare situations, like +5 energy swords etc.

With the release of a new chapter, certain predicatable events occur which shift the economy into a state of flux for a period of time. Certain items become much more valuable for a limited amount of time. Even with the availability of a tab to stock them, most will still find that they need them.
Afterall, who doesn't rush out and get new _________ as soon as they can ?
And of course the flip side of all this flux is the temporary reduction in the value of certain items. As referenced by another poster; ectos, shards, rubys, saphires all reached ridiculously low prices. You'd think that they had a tanker full of oil run aground in Alaska....
Which brings me to my point and what I find is the easiest way to make money in game.
speculate in quantity
upgrade - 2 piles + 2 stacks = 1 stack/pile of higher value
buy low and sell high
farm greens that others have yet to figure and flood
I do believe that chest running can be profitable, but the total time investment (run, salvage or get rare item, sell) and cash outlay for keys is too much for my tastes. I can make a profit without ever having to sell to anyone but NPCs if I want. Much more by selling directly. And even more when a new chapter is released.

I say Jacklicious sums it up pretty well, that is what I do for the most part
also, get yourself a Monk and a Warrior setup and learn to solo as many
things as possible, you will want to change things up from time to time.
The warrior probably has more solo opportunity's than the monk, just
look at the farming thread here and the solo list, alot there to keep yourself
busy with.
I find going to FoW spider cave with my warrior the fastest way to
consisently gather $$, I have not gotten to UW with my monk yet to try
monk/necro farming for ectos, but I think it is also a good $$ maker.
I been just doing desert and troll cave/tundra giants runs, the tundra giants
drop gold armor, got a sup. vigor last week, sold for 30k.
good luck in making $$
SirShadowrunner
p.s. sell all 20/20 sundering mods.....sold bowstring for 25k last week also....

I farm all materials for my armors, and it pays for the armor and then some. Not once have I bought 15k or obsidian armor, still thinking about whether or not to get the fow but I already have all the materials. HECK! collectors armor works great until you get the cash and materials, dont waste money on buying steel and iron for armor... just get collectors and wait till you got everything
Like many other posters I've sold green items and stuff from the deep, made lots of money that way. I use a 14^50 purple bow... and when I touch farm I use collector gear, its better than that easy to farm green blood staff too. Rit farming is great for cash also

As Lenny said, I farm all materials for my armor. I don't like to farm a lot, I like to enjoy the game; however, I have learned to farm for cash when needed (having a rit have helped a lot). Always check collectors weapons, which are very good. Also, pick up everything that drops for you and sell to merchant. Save all collectors items and watch for people who needs them and sell for a fair price.
Taeron
I tried several farming builds, with several classes and although it can bring up lots of ca$h, it's time consuming...chest running is fun but also somewhat boring when you have no luck like me and open 200 chests with nothing valuable inside...(noooo, no more purple sticks and wands...)
So I decided not to chase the plats but just trying to enjoy the game for what it is. This night I opened a chest with a team a friends. result : gold crappy wand for me and superior vigor ruen for a friend. Guess that's the way it goes !
If I need money to satisfy a sudden need I'll farm with my R. Otherwise, I'll just try to put the plats in my stockage instead of buying a perfect mod that seems attractive...

And here I was thinking having 200k was rich.
I guess it all depends on your perspective.
For those of you who have millions in gold, I gotta ask, what is there to spend money on? FoW armor for all your characters?
