The Last Windseeker
A few sketches of characters that I drew.
I have just recently have taken up drawing, so I'm not the best, but tell me what you think.

Pretty good sketches for starters, and I can understand some of the pencil smears too.
Draxus
I rly like em, wish i could draw nearly as well as that. If you think about doing commisions let me know.
The Last Windseeker
Well, if you want to post some pictures of one of your characters I'm willing to draw it.
Ulivious The Reaper
Only thing i see thats even remotely close to wrong in those is the arm of the warrior, they're a tad bit skinny, but aside from that i think they're nice for first times 8) better than anything i can do
Draxus
Thx man here are my main chars. Thx again and gl

Not bad...

It's rather impressive to see someone just starting to draw and already getting into using shadows and such. Your hands look a bit small to me, and for that matter so do your heads.. though Im not sure if thats just a personal style. What might help in that is thinking about hands being relativly the same size as a face when opened out.. and heads are about half the width of the shoulder-span. (Or atleast on me! That sorta stuff varies on the subject of course) Good job! keep it up
Ristaron
That's very impressive for someone who has just started drawing. The only thing you need to work on that draws my attention (as in, isn't trivial detail) is the face... You've got the basics but you just need a little more practice to get them properly the first time (I can see the smudging from your pencil eraser a fair bit in that area).

Draw from the top left to the bottom right if you are left handed, and the top right to the bottom left if you are left handed, ^^
or at least move in that direction.
Some hints:
Get better paper. Youd be amazed how much better things look on nice smooth bristol...
Get better pencils. I myself never use anything user than a H or an F.
Get better eraser.
Find a nice comfortable place to draw and let the creativity come out ^_^

Find a nice comfortable place to draw and let the creativity come out ^_^ Better paper, hmm. I guess a 5 dollar sketch book isn't good enough. Better paper would help. The paper I use right now doesn't handle erasing that well.
Better pencils would probably help me too. Right now I just have a mechanical pencil I found in my house.
And on that mechanical pencil is one of the worst erasers ever. Better eraser is another thing I could use.
Guess its time for me to go drawing supplies shopping.

Same problem, I have no clue what H or F pencils are. Types of lead? Quality?
Thanks for the comments. They help. I started drawing the ranger. This is what I got so far. Not sure how I'm going to deal with the turtle shells. Drawing the details on them looks like its going to be troublesome. Seban Anu
Hey, youre faces are already showing improvement Good job.

H pencils use harder graphite leads and are lighter than the softer B pencils. F I have no clue. My favorite erasers are kneading, they don't leave residue and cleanly remove graphite traces. To prevent smearing, keep a piece of paper over the drawing under your hand.
Draxus
Dang that looks real nice, Thx a lot. Now i can draw nothing more then a stick figure so im rly amazed now rly nice job on the face and a lot of those extra details in the armor. Looks rly in proportion. Thx again

cool stuff you have going on

They're not too bad ^^
A few tips on shading, since you attempted it, and this is information that's helped me a lot over time: Remember no not shade *only* around the lines. Learn how to imply form using shading instead of lines. For example: Shade in the kneecap, don't outline it. Or, similarly, shade in the abs of a character to add depth, for only shading near your lines made characters appear flat. PS: Remember in real life, there's backlighting almost everywhere, and shading near a line, but not quite on it, can give the illusion of backlighting ^_^ lyra_song
F is a lead hardness, it stands for "fine", its for very fine lines.
H is also a lead hardness stands for "hard" Harder pencils leave much much lighter lines, which is very good if your style requires a lot of erasing, because you will have very light lines to erase. Later on you can go back and retrace some lines with a 2B-3B pencil. I use bristol pad exclusively when im drawing something i want to keep. Its very very hard and thick paper, almost more like cardboard. It takes pencil and inks REALLY well. Its also more expensive per page but definitely worth it. When im just mucking around or making ideas, i use cheap cheap composition notebooks from the 99 cent store (you know...cheap notebooks with lines). TGgold
I useually draw in my Academie Sketch Portfolios if it's an honest sketch, or just computer paper if it's a doodle. If I plan on doing a truly serious piece, I'll useually sketch a draft first, then use *good* paper for the final.
Mostly, though, I find I just CG most of my work, so traditional media gets the back seat : ) *hugs his tablet* The Last Windseeker
Heres the pic shaded.
Hopefully I can pick up some better drawing supplies soon. I think it would help me out a lot. I'm thinking about getting some colored pencils also, so I can add some color to my drawings. Is there a certain type of colored pencils I should get? Draxus
That is so nice thx again.

You are doing a really nice job! I can see a touch of anime-style in your drawings. As far as the shading goes, I'm thoroughly impressed that you've included it, but try to pay attention to how the shading actually is in the picture, or on real-life subjects. If you're going for a sense of realism, practice drawing some still-life or even real photos. Work on getting every shade just right, and you will get it engraved in your mind how shadows and light play with one another.
Geesh, listen to me. I'm sounding like my old art teacher! TGgold
First off, I'm glad to see some more shading. A few things: Don't be afraid of dark values. Yuo should never really have *white* on your paper, but you can make the lights more light by making the darks actually dark. A see a lot of timid shading and flat coloring. Adding more extreme values helps make a picture more interesting.
A few tips: Remember to apply backlighting: This gives something it's 3-D shape. If you don't understand, I can show you an example or two ^^; When drawing faces, the eyes are at the midpoint of the head. The ears start around the bridge of the nose, and end around the bottom of it (on most people). There's more space between the eye and the eyebrow than you may think, remember to kep that space available so you can accentuate the eye-lid. In general: Some basic facial anatomy...sorry, did it really fast >_> There are better references out there, but you get the point. A basic example of shading on a face, since faces are pretty mch encmopass a lot of rules. Note that highlights exist from reflections off of whatever the backgruodn would be, and by adding these *such as on the jaw* it gives the shape a more 3-D aspect. Hope that helps in the future ^^ Martian
*cries*
I've been drawing for ten years, and you are already better than me, and you just started! /suicide The Last Windseeker
Thanks for the tips on shading. I'll work on that some. I'm taking a college art class soon, so I'm hoping that will help me with my drawing too.
TGgold
Which class are you taking?
Ulivious The Reaper
Lol i'm in art 2 in highschool, i'm gonna take art 3 then ap studio, i hear that'll be fun, as for that college class, good luck!
TGgold
AP Art Portfolio at my school is freaking insane in terms of workload. Everyone told me to take it...but I can't due to schedualing and the fact I've never taken an art class in my life
I'd recommend just observing how people look, and interact, and how things look in general. Get a little sketchpad and draw anythign that interests you. Try reading Narcissus and Goldmund (by Hesse), and that may help with how you view art too ^^ actionjack
Art class teach you nothing... (the one in HS and none-art-insitut college that is). They just give you oppertunity to pratice, but not teach you the techniques... (or maybe I just have bad teacher)
I got 3 in my AP art protolios too.... aww...that was so long ago.... I feel so old now.... Well, hope to see more. One very important part in partice in art/drawing that many people forget is the audience. You need to find people who will encourage you and appreciate you stuff, which prompt you to do more and do them better. This fourm is good with that (for most part), so don't be shy in posting more. TGgold
See, the teacher at our school actually teaches us stuff o.o I know in public school over here, the teacher is just like 'draw a tree' and then waits for people to do the assignment, instead of actually helping any.
As I said, art is about observation and emotion IMHO (and practice). Being an active observer will teach you more than any class ever will. Ulivious The Reaper

*snip* well, my art teacher (and my friends around me) have taught me so many techniques in drawing, i've came from drawing stick figures (and that was on a good day) to getting the basic figure, and sometimes even the detail in on objects and starting to get into humans, of course just experimenting on my side, OMFGimCUTE can you make a skecht of my guy too? Chilly Ress
The bodies of the sketches are very good, I would work on the detail and believability of the faces.
HaloGrunt
i like it, i dont care about smudges, it's way better than i could ever do..
no really. you dont want to see the monsters i create. azn deathfire
looks good, keep it up
