in faction, getting to lvl 20 is fairly easy, if its your first character, then yes it will be slow as you dont know where to go next, or what to expect.

once you make another character, you will know what to do, what to expect from quests, and how to do them fast.

my mesmer took her 16 to 18 hours of gameplay to reach lvl 20 , around 3 days with breaks and other characters to play, , she is the fifth canthan born character i have made, and i know what quests i can do in the same area, if i need or i dont need the henchies.

I LOVE the clothes and intend to keep playing just on that aspect alone! LOL. .I will love throwing up screenshots on the Everquest forum going "SEE? SEE? See what I wear in GW" and everyone drool

well when Factions came out, it just made it very clear that they wont be raising the level cap.

The way I see it, the game also has a great end game PvE enviorment. Let me explain.



Normal MMORPGs like EQ and WoW and so on, yes do have end game PvE. Like Raids where entire bands of guilds can go together and kill in a very high end area.


There are does sort of end game areas in GW. And they are incredible challanging, and I think Anet will continue to make incredible challanging dungeons. The difference is just that your fighting in 8 man groups here instead of 40 man groups. This is good or bad depending on your preference, but I personally like it, because it gets very intense and so much harder and challanging than wow or eq. There is not room for mistakes in the Underworld. There is not room for mistakes in the cantha elite missions.

And the game keeps expending.


You don't just retire after lvl 20 mate. You keep going. You keep collecting skills, you keep collecting armor, you keep redefing your strategies and builds. you start making your own builds and your own concepts. you start incorporating it into your guilds strategies. you start helping new enemies reach the top. you start trying to get all your titles and see the entire world, and before your even half done with this new expansions will come up and the cycle will go on.


Its not a game that is fixated by lvling and gear finding, but it can last for a lifetime.


And many people enjoy it for different reasons... in my guild the people play alot every single day but always only pvp and they have done that for the last 15 months. others run. others hang out with the community. others like to take characters through the storyline. others like to pvp. others like to start businneses like running.

GW is a game that is as fun and longlasting as your willing to get good at it.



Actually oblivion is just not that different... oblivion was not made for you to quit it once you beat the main storyline. the hole point of that game was really to wander off on your own with no sense of direction and complete quests and make a name for yourself


enjoy it at your own pace. there is no monthly fee. this amazing game will always be with you. there is no preasure. and you can always leave and come back when you want. so no need to ever retire from guild wars. remember that.

GW PvP =/= Any other PvP, this PvP takes skill, and a little work. I normally hate PvP, but when they introduced Alliance Battles via Factions, I got hooked...I would suggest trying it a few times, whether you liked PvP in other games, just for the sole fact that it is skill based, and not based on who has the best armor.

Casual, in this sense, is determined more by time spent per week rather than how long you've been gaming in total...

A non-casual gamer, in this context, is the type that plays an average of 6 hours per day and gets to level 20 in under two days. Being a casual gamer isn't an insult, it's just a nod that you don't spend all your time in the game. Personally, I'd consider it more of a compliment than being 'hardcore' - there are other things in life, after all .

As people have said: the system in GW is largely intended to be friendly to casual gamers: Reaching the maximum level, and thus being close to a level playing field statistics-wise with the people who have been playing hardcore since forever, is a fairly simple accomplishment. After that, it's mostly eye candy and gathering the skills to try different builds.

Personally, due to the latter, I'd say GW actually has more endgame than many traditional MMORPGs, in that many MMORPGs require a character to stick to a particular build which often may be built up from level 1 to reach its optimal potential (although I don't know if this is the case for EQ), while GW gives you the option to almost completely rebuild your character towards a different style, allowing for a high degree of experimentation.

I will only give one sugestion.
If the game is telling u to take a break, take it=P
this is not a good endless, or forever something game.
even for its pvp=P ppl get all fire up if they do it too long and release their steam on other ppl.
and lv 20 is realy nothing, u will be lv 14~17 when u left the island in faction. 20 only mean ppl will let you in the mission party in the main land=P

As with any game. . this game has it's ups and downs I'm sure. Different games have different things to offer and it is not upp to us to tell someone that a particular game is not right for someone else. . .unless you really know said person.
You will play whatever game for whatever reason it intrigued you in the first place.
I am finding this game to be a challenge in the respect that you are limited to a total of 8 spells. That in itself give me a whole new game experience because in EQ I can run with EVERY one of my spells up. Not that my 1st level spells are going to do me any good against a 42 level mob. . .but I can have them all up. Here. . .I have to decide which 8 are going to benifit me and my group most for a given mission. However there are certain spells that I will always run with. . .

The main thing in gaming is to have fun and when you start not having fun. . THEN it is time to quit.

I PvP and PvE with all my characters quite a bit. The game is set up for level 20 characters only really. If you aren't level 20 you're just waiting until you are level 20. The real progression in this game is your own personal skill. There is a very clear and noticable difference in skilled level 20 players and unskilled level 20 players. Think about it like a FPS. Your avatar never shows any progression of any kind, yet you continually get better. It's about YOU not arbitrary numbers on a screen

If you're looking for a way to "show off", I'd shoot for titles and fancy armor. Those alone can keep you busy for a long, long time. Seeing as you like fancy clothes, getting a big pile of 15k armor may be your thing .

As for PvP, I never enjoyed any PvP in other RPGs like Diablo 2, it always degenerated into a "who can smack the other person for longer" fest whith no real skill. It's fun to outfox your opponents and get mental pictures of them cursing in front of their keyboards.

As for people like Tarun who want a higher level cap, I propose an optional mod that adds a zero to every number in the game every month or so. "I'm level 2,000, haha! Guild Wars is so awesome because the level cap is a higher number than WoW! I do 20,000 damage to mighty level 2400 enemies! I'm godlike!". Heck, you wouldn't even need programming. Just paste a zero to your screen so you can enjoy the game.

There's LOTS to do in GW! In Factions, there's elite missions that'll challenge even the best players. Going for FoW armor is quiet the grind, but once you've gotten it, you'll feel like you've accomplished something. (BTW - Mesmer FoW armor looks awesome! I would say that IMHO it's the best looking armor in the game, but that's flame-bait )

Visit the Fissure of Woe & the Underworld - two more places that'll challenge most anyone, especially those new to those places.

Try the PvP, there's several flavors in GW & Mesmers have a much easier time of getting into groups. If you don't want to deal with bad gamesmansip, I'd avoid the Random Arenas. AB's are a good place to test the waters, as there isn't the pressure of GvG or HA battles and if you make a mistake, it's not that critical of a deal.

But the most fun you can have is getting all of the skills for your character & playing around with them until you find a build that rips through baddies like a sharp knife through soft butter!

The one nice feature that you should take advantage of is the 4 character slots! Try different professions out and see how they work. That'll give you a better understanding of how they all work together.

In other words, the main portion of the game starts at level 20. Your first character might take a while to get there, and maybe second, but in factions it takes a lot less time to reach 20 than prophecies. Not that it's terribly slow there. I won't put it in days, but in hours: It'll take you about 10 hours to get a character from 1 to 20 in factions without excessivly rushing and assistance from others. From there you can:

1. Finish the rest of the campaign (you won't even have a third of it covered when you hit 20)
2. Scrub clean every courier job in Kaineng City... er, I mean "do the quests"
3. Titles, such as cartographer, skill hunter and seeker of wisdom
4. Re-do the campaign with "master's" groups to get Protector of Cantha title
5. Fissure, Underworld, The Deep, Urgoz Warren - the most difficult and time consuming areas in the game. Especially the first two.
6. Farm. Get nice-looking things or just stockpile a ton of platinum in your storage.
7. Alliance Battles, Fort Aspenwood, Jade Quarry, Random Arenas
8. Heroes' Ascent and GvG (you're basically required to buy prophecies for these two, despite what anet tells you)

You should give all of the above at least a try, chances are something is just right for you, even though this game is nothing like EQ. Personally, I don't see how you can play GW for over a year and not get bored with anything but HA and GvG. Other people can't stand high-end PvP at all and do just alliance battles (which are lots of fun, not bashing AvA here) I spent 2 hours playing them tonight, but they lack a greater goal and so don't keep my attention for long. Yet some others play PvE exclusively and spend most of the time farming... or something. I'm not really sure what hardcore PvErs do other than farming :P

how about collect all of your professions elites or get all the greens you could ever want?

Don't listen to people, MOST of the gameplay IS actually level 20, level 20 isn't a goal in itself.

ignore people that say GW is only about PVP -- its not

(with the exception of Aspenwood, but I mainly kill NPCs there )


PVE Life at 20 in GW consists of
- doing quests that earn you more experience for more skill points
- capturing elite skills from nameds in certain areas
- farming items (but I dont do this)

Hard minded people shouldn’t even try to discuss GW for a start, since it is hands down the ONLY Flexible online RPG (won’t even get in that OLD matter of MMORPG or not) we have.

Let me explain myself, I am not ALL ABOUT PVP or PVE, I actually like both! Playing with or against my friends is ALWAYS a blast and I gather a lot of fun doing both. And there’s were GW shines, you can go from one place to the other in a click of a button.

I am playing this for over a year now and already been in 4 - 5 different guilds, some of them doing GvG on daily bases with narrow minded strategies and forum and map plans and everything you would wish from a hardcore guild, others that I would just gather with some friends to go do some crazy missions, help newcomers and talk while I was trading in outposts or farming some monsters or whatever. Being able to change from one to the other without having to go trough a whole process of annoyances is INCREDIBLE.

The other thing that GW does a magnificent job at is chaining both aspects of the game...when you are on the PVE, it throws occasionally some PVP content for you to mess with, and the other way around goes as well. SO you can enjoy both of them at the same time without having to worry about classifications.

And finally, the best aspect of the game, and the one that will be making me buy every single new expansion Anet releases, NO MONTHLY FEES. Don’t take me wrong, that isn’t an excuse for me not wanting to pay for WOW or whatever (50US$ every 6 months is almost the same as paying fees anyway ^^) BUT this method doesn’t bind you to the game, I mean, IT IS A GAME, and every now and then I will get tired of it. On my game time this already happened twice, I would simple uninstall GW from my machine and stopped playing for 3 months or so w/ out having to worry. When I felt like it, I would simply download again the 100kb client and start playing right away without feeling any remorse for my down time.

Also its nice to point out that GW makes an awesome job of dealing with "time consuming farmers", I mean, people that play 24/7 or people that go from 1 to lvl 20 in 2 days or so, by just making this kind of grinding not so profitable as it is on other games. I mean, even after that 3 months brake I took from the game, when I came back I STILL had the better armor, the maxed out items and all.

Overall idea, GW is appealing for ANYONE that likes RPG games, it is SO FLEXIBLE and have SO MANY different goals and aspects that blend PVE with PVP so GOOD that even if you don’t like one or another, the chances are that in the end you will be playing both. For all the ones that flamed the post and/or the poster itself, if you don’t like the game just go play something else, I BET that in 6 months or so when you fell homesick, you will be back to GW ^^

AND regarding the thread title, the life in GW happens before and after the lvl cap is reached, the game is built in a manner that being lvl 20 or lvl 2000 would not make anything different, the choose about it being 20 is because they realized that making it any bigger would not make any changes to the game play, so they locked it there. Just don’t bother looking at the lvl window and you will see that in a short time you won’t miss it.
