Runes, when to salvage, when to sell?

Okay, old timers no doubt know this, but I was amazed how many in game didn't. A guildy found this out when we all started and I wanted to pass it on after seeing how many in game didn't know it (said in "all" and many were surprised).

Okay, when you loot a rune (usually reffered to as a part of armor or clothing etc..) Your first thought is to Identify it. Ok, fine. After you do, check the shown value BEFORE you salvage it (unless you want to use it of course). Now if you want to sell it to the trader or a player, check the rune trader for that type and value of rune. And see what it sells for. If it retails for say 100 gold, and has an unsalvaged value of 180 gold, you will get more selling it to a merchant than using your expert salvage kit and making it a rune. Make sense? Take your time and be smart

It's easy.. if it's purple, identify it and sell it to merchant. If it's blue, identify, then check with rune trader price.

Prices.. if you can buy the rune for 100g, you get 30g for selling it to the trader, so check on the value of the armor before salvaging.

Superior runes. Definatly check with rune trader, unless it's a mesmer rune, in which case, 99% of the time, it's more efficient to sell it to the merchant unsalvaged.

Unless, of course, it is a Major Vigor rune... unless you like throwing away money.

The only purple worth salvaging it the major vigor rune. (Unless it's one you want for YOUR armor.) Some blues and golds are good to salvage, many aren't.

Here's a nearly foolproof process for dealing with runes:
1. ID the item, note it's value.
2. Check rune trader's SELL price.
3. If the sell price is significantly (roughly 250g or more) higher than the unsalvaged armor, then Expert salvage it and net a bit of profit.
4. If the sell prices is NOT significantly higher, then just sell it to the merchant & avoid the loss.

This really amazed you. I am more amazed of how many people still don't know how to call a target or target a called one

A fundamental part of the game and yet so rarely used

Good post however hopefully some newer players will read your post and reap the rewards.

generally these are the only ones worth salvaging and selling to rune trader:

-any warrior minor rune
-any monk superior
-sup absorb, sup vigor, major vigor (can sell the sup absorb and vigs to ppl for a little more)
-necro sup curses and death
-might be some minor/sup rit/assn runes worth salvaging but not sure

edit: a couple other sups: marksmanship, fire magic, energy storage

Oh yeah, and don't forget MINOR vigors, too! They can usually fetch somewhere between 200-300g, although I think they're on the decline, at least until Nightfall comes out.

Keep this in mind, folks. When a new game is released, just about all runes (or rather the runes for classes most played) will increase as people make new characters galore and go buying. This also holds true for materials and dyes as well. Just a reminder.

I've actually taken to selling all runes to the trader on the grounds that I like keeping the prices low. The profit difference isn't all that high, after all.

Sup salvage everything first, and sell to people who need unlocks or the wisdom title.

I always do this, even though there's not a huge profit to be made. Look after the gold and the platinum will look after itself ay?

When Factions came out and everybody created new characters the prices for minor vigors skyrocketed (in general the value of all minor runes increased significantly). I expect the same to happen with Nightfall, so I'm storing most of my minor rune drops (the popular ones) and wait with selling them 'til Nightfall comes out.

All those people not realizing this is the very reason that the runes are cheaper then the rags they are salvaged from. I am not complaining, I really like it that most major runes are only 100g.

If you want to stock up, I'd suggest dyes. People will use dyes on their new armors. And dyes stack
