I've been toying with the idea of a "monk school" for the past couple of weeks, and let me state up front I in no way wish to champion this idea personally (basically due to work schedule), but I thought it worth throwing out there for others on the board.

Firstly, I feel it is worth noting that there are far too many crappy monks out there with way too many misconceptions of general ingame strategies an theories. Some recent things that I have read on the boards in the last couple of weeks:

*all quotes simply paraphrased

"All you do to monk is stare at the health bars -- and click"
"a monk should always have rez sig in TA"
"My monk build has Orison and Healing breeze, and that is basically all i use"
"I have Heal party/ Aegis, and no E management but i do just fine"
"I run a heal monk build in PvP, and I do just fine" (mmmk)
etc.

Then there are those monks that seem to truly want to improve and learn but are simply out of the loop sort of speak. And of course we come here to discuss stuff which helps, but here's what I was thinking:

Someone of experience create a guild (perhaps called: Monk--if name not taken) accept members that are in earnest attempting to improve their monking game. Perhaps charge a memebership due? Right off the bat you now have access to a good pool of monks, and in particular monks attempting to learn and exchange ideas. From PvE to PvP. From smiter to infuser. For example I respect from what I read of their posts Sno and JR, it would be nice to play side by side with someone of that caliber. In the end it would be a farm system (sport terminology) for monks, which top guilds might even recruit from.

Of course it was simply an idea, one that i wish i could spearhead, but like I said rl keeps me quite busy. So what do you guys think?

I don`t think monking is hard enough to have a school about it. Sure there are very complicated topics, like what weapons to bring, focus swapping etc, but alot of it just comes with practice.

Maybe u could make a Forum and advertise it in GW.

I agree with Dodo The Extinct.

To make a guild like that it would be fairly hard in ways. It would require to much work. You'd have to get alot of guys in it and then you'd have to help them all.

But the forum. Thats a really good idea. You could post monk builds, weapons, etc. on that and allow people to ask for help. That would probably help improve peoples monking more than a guild.

I don't know about a Guild but a school why not it would certianly help those out who need it.When you think about a Guild like this it would be like the Ladies of Blue Steal Runners Academy and they want like 8 ectos before enrolement.I don't like that idea and we do have other Char. not just Monks an Acedemy yes a guild no.You left out remmeh,Tsunami Rain and jelly samdwich.

The thing about monking is that it's about 80% experience and 20% build. Theres really nothing that can necessarily be "taught" about monking, that can't just as easily be learned on your own by practicing. Once you have a good build (use the forum, or the PvP premades) then you can practice, and eventually become good.

Sure there are pointers you can give people, about watching for spike targets, prekiting, not overhealing, but all of that is really just stuff you should learn on your own. Also people have different ideas and styles when monking, so a school is pretty impractical.

Bottom line: the more you play, the better you'll be. It's not like farming, which is the same no matter how many times you do it (and thus can be taught) PvP requires awareness and adaption that only comes with experience and confidence.

And about a forum... um, what do you think this section of guru is for?...

I agree with Sno. But the most important things a new monk needs to know are:

1. It doesnt matter if you are healing or protection, max your divine favor.
2. Know the enemies you are up against and bring Condition/Hex removal as needed.
3. The single most important thing a monk needs to remeber is that its not always your fault if people start dying.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

Don't ask for feedback if you've won a battle, people will say you did a good job even if it meant that you had to run around keeping yourself alive to get a flawless.

Your job as a monk is not to keep people living, but to keep em from dying.

So basically dont waste energy by healing someone to their max health all the time -.-.

If you wanna learn to monk in gvg, make a premade and go do alot of RA or TA, most common are boon prot, blessed light, boon works best in ra/ta.

If you wanna learn to monk in ha, look in the pvp sections and find the monk build you would like to try/learn: the most common are woh, rc, sb/infuse, then go join a pug in ha or try get a guild/friend group together.

^I couldn't have said it any better. Most of the "bad" monks you see out there are simply those that have been rushed and power leveled through the game rather than playing through the game (as should ALL people who play monks for the first time). Playing through the game brings experience which is needed for such things as monking the deep, fow, sf, and other places.

As for your idea of a monking school, unless you (or whoever would instruct a monk academy) plan to run them through missions over and over again (which is, again, pointless) I wouldn't suggest making one.
