Armour: Wear & Tear
Nexus Icon
So I was stood in LA yesterday looking at my character's shiny metal carapace thinking "Wouldn't it be cool if his armour changed in appearance as the character got more experience?".
Now I know this would be hard to implement, but I think it could look really cool; you could spot grizzled old veterans easily by the dents and scratches in their armour. And n00bs would stick out like a sore thumb, even in their ebayed FoW, due to being all shiny and new.
The same idea could be applied to weapons and shields too.
Would be very hard to implement on the other classes, but the GW artists are so talented, I'm sure that they could come up with something
Of course, some people would want their armour to stay eternally shiny, so make it a tickbox option like the titles, so it can be turned on and off.

Sounds like a good idea I want my war's armor to show a little bit of battle scars instead of looking like it has never been used before.

Yeah, but what about all the people with FoW armor who don't want it all dinged up. They'd be pretty ticked to see thier armor change over time agaisnt their will.

They have better things to do like new types of Armour I personally would like to see an improvements on Censor's armour as it looks drappy.
Terra Xin
you would have to think twice about buying new armour.
lyra_song
i actually like this idea
^^;;
imo:
Every scratch is a story and a personality.

I can't imagine how much tar would be caked on my warrior's 15k luxon from taking friends up into dragon's gullet>_<

Depending how this was done; it could either look cool or really really bad.

and to think there wasnt a way to make some armours ele and 15K druids more skimpyer...

No thanks.. this is just like the ammo suggestions ~_~

I think some are relating this to the Diablo degredation. This is an option of altered appearance over time on the armor. Key words are "option" and "appearance", not effect and quality.
I think it would be cool to see the armor degrade it's "appearance" over time. Maybe, as was said, with scratches or dings for metal and tears/shreds on leather and cloth.
Could be made simple such as being out in a zone and it happens quickly, then returning to town instantly resets it's appearance, or complex such as taking days to effect it.
/signed - cool idea
/not signed as a money sink, keep it optional to the player as a check box.
Will be funny to see my ranger cover her naughty bits after her 15k druid bra is ripped by an Oni that happens to walk with a sway... lol

It's an interesting idea, but I wouldn't want it, and I highly doubt it's gonna happen. In order to implement the system, an immense amount of new graphics work (and probably new programming code) would have to be put into place. Frankly, I don't think ANet is going to want to go to all that work so that people can have body-shop-ready armor.
And besides: what's the point of doing that to be different, when everyone will have the same kind of scratches and dents after a while?

Warrior - dents and scratches
Ranger - marks on a piece of leather for every 1000 kills (like counting days in prison or something similar)
Ele - add a gem or something similar for every 1000 kills
Mesmer - more sparkles or intricate stitching for every 1000 kills
Necro - more caked on blood? for scars, more background scars (where the actual scars aren't)
Monk - similar to ranger, but with some holy icon
Assassin - more daggers per 1000 kills
Ritualist - not sure, but someone out there that plays Rt could come up with something

kind of pointless.
Marty Silverblade
What's the point? all of the other peoples armors are reduced in quality in towns and outposts so it would just look horrible for scars and things (it'd look like necros have been in the sun waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long with all the red bits smudged around.)

This adition would add alot of reality to teh game

I don't know about you, but I suspect that my 2GB SLI system could EASILY handle that.
floppinghog
it could be turned off if you make it a title.
besides, all exp is good for is skill pts, might as well put some titles for it eh?

For any non-metal armor set, I'd be surprised if there was as much as a 'scratch' left after being set on fire and walking through lava pits.

Sounds cool, though I agree that after a while everybody would start to have the exact same scratches, scars, etc.
Degeneration over time would take a lot of power, it would probably be better to have it based on number of kills(but then it could be farmed easily) exp(could still be farmed, but would be a lot tougher) or maybe even character in game age. The last would be best, imo, but restrictions would have to be put in to stop afk'ers.
In the end though its all cosmetic, and once everybody has it they'll all stop displaying it, unless its insanely tough to do(say the higher levels of wear and tear are on par with the exp needed for legendary survivor or something)

My warrior wears 15k ascalon..... That thing already looks ruggard already
thats why I picked it

The Silver Star
well if tha had that feature people may want to keep there armor all nice and shiny, so you would have to be able to clean it up when you wanted and i presonally dread to think what the upkeep cost on maintaining your fow armor all shiny and enw looking would cost ><
Xenrath
So long as it's purely aesthetic and does not actually force you to grind for "repair kit" materials etc. then this doesn't hurt anyone and it's a nice idea for more eye candy. Optional of course.
Poison Ivy
I see no point...
Go out of some town, get attacked, die, repeat, die, repeat. Noobs can do that easily.
Get armor that looks more scratched if your so into it

ehh, with war gladiator, it means ur gonna bleed, a LOT cause ur armor barely covers anything
actionjack
Intersting idea, and a good one.
But question if will get implented due the the nature of the game.
Maybe good for a single player RPG game.
Would like to see it, if not too hard to make.

I think the armor changes on wow, if blizzard can do that on wow with graphics like that, then anet can do that on gw.

This would be cool, how does the age of your armor make you more or less experianced? Also people with less "dents and scratchs" on there armor aren't newbs. Their probably just people who just got NEW armor.
Some that has not a clue what there doing can what there doing can look more "experianced" than a a player that knows what hes doing who just got new armor...
