Guildless.

You don't need a PvP-Only character to participate in a guild battle.

The Black Hand Gang [BHG] and The Black Helm Gang [BHeG]

Your guild has to have a guild hall to do guild vs guild (GvG).

You may use PvE or PvP characters to GvG.

GvG only take place on guild hall maps. Each guild hall has its own features. Some have trebuchet you can repair and use to fire on the other team; some have ice which slows you; some have a guild thief to break into the other team's fort; some have quicksand.

Any character can play GvG, regardless of whether PvP or RP.
However, you need a guild hall and 7 more willing members to play GvG.
My guess is that you are too early in the game (whichever one it is) to get a hall. In Prophecies (The 1st game) you must reach Lion's Arch, but in Factions you must reach Kaineng Centre. In either town, find the Canthan Ambassador who will show you the halls you wish to see. You need a Celestial Sigil which you can buy at any of these "Show-Halls", as I like to call them, but they aren't cheap (Last I checked: 11,000g. And it varies). However, once you have one, a hall costs nothing more but that Sigil.

Guildless.

There's a Canthan Ambassador at the Great Temple of Bahaltzar, also. You may get there by clicking the picture of the boat on your world map.

Nope, a roleplaying character can GvG. All you have to do is go to your guild hall (if you have one), get your skills and stuff ready, get into a group, and have your guild leader click the Guild Battle button. Only the leader has a Guild Battle button, so that means all GvG's must have your leader involved. In guild battles you have to kill the other teams guild lord and avoid yours being killed. Each guild lord has its own defenders so it's not just sneaking in and soloing the guild lord. There is a flag stand in the middle of the ground, and if put your flag on it and keep it there for 2 mins, your team gets a morale boost, which is very important as it recharges your rez signet.

Well thats basically it, if you want more complicated info then you could wait for more responses or just watch GvG's

To do a guild battle, you need at least 4 members of your guild, one of which being an officer or the leader to start the battle. Any officer can start a battle, not just the leader. The other 4 members can be guests, alliance members, or henchmen.
