Swords / Axes / Hammers all have different uses in different situations.

Its better to look at the SKILLS you want to use, and use the weapon that those skills require.
If I want knockdowns I'd be looking at stuff like Hammer Bash - which means it'd be going into the Hammer Line.
if I want the biggest spike numbers those belong to stuff like Ex. Strike which would put me into axes for the Eviserate/Ex Strike hgih dmg.
If I like Final Thrust or need that huge last dmg, or want to use stuff like Riposte..Swords are going to be my weapon.

Because hammer skills have an obvious goal - Knocking something down, and In PvE its better to just PWN the monster with dmg instead of Knocking it down becuase stuff like Knockdowns are more for pressure and keeping things from running away.
In PvP:
They are used alot (sometimes on Ranger/Warriors called thumpers). This is because good Knockdowns on the enemies monk or something can leave their team open to get PWNT while they are knocked down. And Knocking down fleeing foes can get them dead quick.
Its just a difference in focus. PvE is more about "pwn the 1000 monsters that you have to track through to the boss" and pvp is more about outplaying and outsmarting 8 other humans that have nice builds and monks and will try to run and outsmart you.
Just like why noone has probably ever asked you to go Edenial+B-out mesmer in pve...

sword or axe? That depend on which chapter you own, and which chapter your character start from.
Ultimately, you want all three.
As for hammer PvE, it is just simply that most people dare not to fight mobs without a shield.
Faction hammer is more than good enough to just pwn the monster (enrage smash), but the prophecy mentality remain in majority of people playing warrior. Another reason is that hammer is one weapon you really want IAS along with it, and most warrior dare not to take frenzy in PvE, while tiger stance are not exactly the greatest thing there is; usually warriors with enrage smash are tactic instead of strength, which means tiger stance won't help.

for soloing fow like the cave, i find axe works better. but overall i like my swords cuz they look cooler and i like dragon slash >_>
Marty Silverblade
Racthoh uses a sword for both solo FoW and UW. You'll want to have all three though.

I use axes and would reccomend them to you. Conditions are of no real use here, and neither are skills like reposite. What you want out of your weapon is damage, and this is what axes do better than swords, raw damage.
And yes, while there are sword attacks like Galrath slash and Final strike, these have high adrenaline costs which greatly reduces your DPS.
With axe attacks like Cleave, penatration chop, or even Whirling axe, you can easly spam these skills and greatly increase your DPS.
Another HUGE advantage of axes is cyclone axe and tripple chop. I know several guides tell you that when the spiders clump up you have to run away and let them seperate, but with cyclone axe and tripple chop this is not true. All you have to do is grab a zealous mod, then spam cyclone axe/tripple cop when the spiders are in a clump and you can continually interrupt their healing springs. This is a big time saver, AND each attack is added damage, unlike 100 blades.
