Code=058 Still won't work.

Hey all,

I've been messing around with this error for bout 3-4 hours now with no luck. I recently bought the game and the installation went fine, etc. However when I tried to create my account and enter my activation key I would get the 058 error.

I went to the support site and scanned these forums, tried everything I could think of with my firewall... even deleting it. None of this helped. I don't use netgear, my connection is a wireless one on a campus. Nor do I use Norton or anything like that. However, I don't believe that the ports 6112 and 80 are blocked (is there a way to check?).

I thought I was getting somewhere last night when I basically disabled all use of my firewall (I had an NVidia FW that had some "anti-hacking" crap features that I turned off). When I did this it actually allowed me to create my account... Nonetheless once I went to choose RP char or PVP char it gave me a network error of 005. I restarted my computer thinking maybe it just needed to refresh GW or some crap... after restarting I am back to the 058 error when I try to log in.

Please help. I just bought the game and have not been able to play it yet. I am aware there are several threads here covering 058... I've read them all and they have not been helpful for me.

All i can tell you that though Anet doesnt seem to be willing to say it out loud, there seem to be problems with connections.

This sometimes turns that bad as that the automatic updates ruin your gw install.

When i get 58 for over a few hours, i reinstall GW, and i force the game to download _all_ updates and maps.

Rightclick your shortcut > Properties > Target > Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image

So add -image to that line, then start gw using that shortcut, it will start to download everything... and i mean everything. (1.2Gb'ish).

When its done remove the -image and try again.

I just tried your suggestion but am still getting 058. I've about exhausted everything I can think of to get this game to work. I dunno, maybe my ISP is blocking the necessary ports... but I doubt that would be the case. Anyhow, I will call my ISP tomorrow to check.

In the meantime is there any way that I can run a test from my machine to test TCP ports? Perhaps a way to have the machine try and communicate thru a port? If there is, someone please tell me how so maybe I can test to see if this is my problem.

Have you talked to the IT staff at your school?

Last year ours blocked all online gaming, and our college was actually behind other colleges in my area doing so. I wouldn't be surprised if yours has done the same thing. Best bet would be to talk to them about their stance on using their connection for gaming.

I really doubt this would be the case because I have been a longtime, hardcore WoW player and have been playing WoW from this same ISP on campus.

I needed a change from WoW, something different so I decided Guild Wars... so far my decision isn't looking like a positive one :/ I haven't even been able to get into the game at all... at most I was able to create my account, now I can't get past the log-in screen for the 058 error.

hey man, a similar thing happens to me. can't log in, get error 7's and occasional 58's, and i'm on a school network. i talked to my network admin and he said that ports 80 and 6112 were fully accessible. they're two of the most commonly used ports anyways. i seriously doubt its anything on your networks side, i think its ncsoft. hang tight.

reinstall GW

Well, this is day2 and still no access to the game. Believe me, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling GW numerous times... stilll nothing. I tried uninstalling it then doing that -image thing to update it before I even tried starting the game... again, still nothing.

I have tried tweaking my firewall, deleting my firewall (and just using the basic fw that windows xp provides, i figured if any firewall would let it through that windows would be the one ), updating GW, reinstalling GW, reinstalling GW then updating GW... I'm at a loss now on something new to try.

Nonetheless, if anyone has any ideas that haven't been used yet I'd love to hear 'em. Maybe its something simple that I'm overlooking... I dunno. Keep the ideas coming, one of them has to be correct.

Alright, sucky outcome sofar for you, i'm sorry.

Time to test your ports, and just about everything realy important (to running gw) that can be tested using the gw client itself.

Do the shortcut > Properties thingy again, this time u use the switch -diag

Start GW with the switch, and a info screen will open telling you what part of the tests is being run. (Can take several minutes, and you may have to tell your firewall to allow gw to connect to do these tests.)

When its done a file called NetworkDiag.txt will be placed in your GW install directory.

Open it, and scroll down to:

The IP's dont need to be the same, but if connections succeed on both ports 6112 and 80 you have ruled out that neither you, your network or your ISP is to blame.

This however does not mean that everything is alright. Because when i get an insisting error=58, and i run the test my ports 6112 and 80 are wide open. Then when i reinstall gw nothing but software changes and it fixes it... weird but true.

The tests include traceroutes to the differant servers, they maybe helpfull in case you find the problem not being your ports.

I realy hope you get it to work, and you should. If those ports are open there is no reason why a clean install shouldn't work

Obviously, there are serveral "connect failed" in there. However, it doesn't say which ports, etc. and there are serveral port 80s that worked and 1 for port 6112 that actually went through. I'm assuming this is my problem... Do you know any way to fix this?

ok, this could after all be a "problem" with your ISP, though if it is what i think it is, its not something you can blame them for. The game servers change IP's a lot, thats why they use them in the "readable" form : File1.ArenaNetworks.com for instance.

For instance your client tries to connect to: auth1.arenanetworks.com and because its not in the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx <nr's form it requests a special server at your provider (DNS server) to translate the auth1.arenanetworks.com into the numbers one. (Its like asking the operator what telephone number belongs to "that" _unique_ name.)

Now what happens when a server changes its IP ("telephone number") is that DNS servers need to update those details, till then its not able to tell you the correct IP.

This updating is done automaticaly, and though you would think this could not take longer then seconds, it could take days.

I had it 2 weeks ago, and it took over 3 days... I was going mad i thought, cus everything was working but i could not connect, till someone told me that they use ip's like auth1.arenanetworks.com. ^_^

So I spoke with my Network Admin on campus today..

He said that although it is an open network, they do block some incoming (not outgoing ports). He said it is done a bit different tho, he said that any port you use to send out from, you are allowed to receive from that same port. However, if you have nothing coming out from a port, you cannot receive from that port until you do. Therefore, if you have outgoing from one port.. say port 80, then you are blocked from incoming from port 6112 until you send outgoing from that port. So, i think GW is sending info out from port 80, expecting some info back through port 6112, which would be blocked because it did not first send outgoing from that port.

Now, my network admin said it is something he cannot change, however, he doesn't mind me trying to get it to work. He said if I can find a way to send outgoing from port 6112 before receiving from it then it opens port 6112 for incoming.

So, I suppose my question now is... is there a way I can make GW send outgoing through port 6112 before receiving incoming from that port. I'm almost certain this is the issue and if I can do this it will fix it. Or is this more technical where I would need to contact GW support and have them maybe walk me through a fix to get it to do that?

So if i understand correctly, what you need to do is send "something" over a port to open it up for incomming traffic?

That is just what you did, resulting in a connect.

Now i wonder how long a port stays open once it is open, because if all you need to do is open it, and it stays open for a few minutes... Then you can try starting the game with the -diag switch first, and let it run only the first 2 tests, (that should then open both 80 and 6112) then ctrl+alt+del to quit it > remove the -diag switch and run game.

Keep in mind though, these are manouvres in the dark for me to. If the guy knows what he's on about, and the ports once open stay open for a couple of minutes, this _might_ work.

I tried it several times, trying to be faster and faster with changing names etc. ik i got it down to a pretty quick change... prob under 15sec, still nothing.

I started thinking about what he said tho, and like you said, looking at my diagnostic, I had to have sent a connection out on 6112 and it had to hit for it to have had the:

206.127.146.41:6112 - connect succeeded

So, wouldn't that have opened the port for the rest of the diagnostic too? Shouldn't there have been no connection issues since there were no "connect failed" prior to this 6112 success. Before there were any "connect failed" there was at least 1 "connection succeeded" for both port 80 and port 6112.

lol, I'm at a total loss now... thanks for your help in trying to solve this, if you think of anything else keep the ideas coming. In the meantime I'll try to get in contact with their support team to see if they may know of a way to get it to work.

EDIT: The more I think about it, I wonder if it blocks incoming from all IPs to a port until something is sent to that specific IP from a port... for instance, "206.127.146.41:6112 - connect succeeded" so it opened 6112 to 206.127.146.41 only. I'm not sure if this is the case.. if it is, I may never get it to work.

Ah, been there lol. I struggled with this for weeks with ANet, multiple tickets and emails between their support staff. They were as baffled as I was. But one day, someone complained that they couldn't login to Lineage II, with seemingly the exact same problem as mine. Wait a minute? That's an NCSoft game as well right? The network admins began to investigate, and apparently all NCSoft games were blocked due to the way they login.. or something.

Well, now I can tell you that there is hope on the horizon, because it did get fixed on my campus. One day it worked again, and everybody was happy! But now the bad news - I have no idea how. They told us they'd sorted it, but didn't say how. All I cared was that it worked again, and I'm no longer at uni now anyway.

My advice to you, is talk to the tech guys again in charge of maintaining your campus network. Tell them that it can be fixed so that people can play Guild Wars without compromising security, and then hope that they are clever people, and work out the same thing that the guys at my campus did.

Well yeah that was my initial thought, but because: "he said that any port you use to send out from, you are allowed to receive from that same port."

But the game is not trying to connect to just one server. The game uses the form: auth1.arenanetworks.com and that's translated by your DNS into the numerical form.

One connection over port 6112 succeeds and the rest doesnt... Maybe it isnt allowed to have multiple connections over the same port? Sounds unlikely. (Thinking out loud here, bear with me.)

Those are the addresses you need to be able to connect to. Maybe your college network uses a filter that allows simply for those addresses to be added so connections are allowed?

I'm happy about Carth's post because it shows someone else got their network management team to solve it for him. Basicaly showing that it isn't seen as a potential network security hazzard. Anet is a reputable US based company, so i dont see why they wouldnt do the same in your case.

Well, I got a response from GW support. lol, I saw the exact reply somewhere on this forum. It was basically an automated response telling me to run the -diag again.

Tomorrow I am going to try to get back in touch with my network admin here and see if there is anything he can do about those connections. Maybe he can authorize communication with them regardless of port use... hopefully. I'll post back after I speak with him with an update.

Well, i talked to him and he said there was absolutely no filter on the network... only this security thing.

However, I got some software to test TCP ports and discovered something. I think that port 6112 is only allowing 1 connection at a time. I think that is why after the first 6112, no others could hit.

I think this because port 6112 would connect with all 3 of the IPs you listed... but it would only connect with 1 until I disconnected from the other (and had been d/c'd from it for bout 20sec). So, it would hit them... but only individually.

Is this a problem on my end that I need to fix or a network thing?

That program that u use to check connections with, does it also show the local ports used to connect to those IP's?

Here is mine again, and i left some things out so it fits on one line:

First number is PID (Proces ID, every running proces on your computer has its own number.)
2nd nr. my IP. (Local IP)
3rd. is Local Port.
4th. is Remote IP.
5th. is Remote Port.

The ports i send out from are not the same ports as GW listens on.
Actualy the local ports used per session change.

Now, if your network needs for you to open a port first to be able to receive on it... it will never work.. because you are sending from just about any port but port 6112, and thats the one you need opened.

You need to convince your network admin to allow incomming traffic on port 6112 to be always allowed. At least for your specific IP.

Than no matter what port you are sending out from, if GW is listening on port 6112 for replys, it will get them.

The very remote possibilily that u maybe not allowed to connect to multiple IP's on the same port.... Use that same programm you use to check connections. Open your browser and connect to a few differant websites. Then you'll find that all of them are connecting on port 80. This would pretty much would rule out that this is stopping you from connecting to GW.

Having the same problem, ran the test and everything is connecting fine. Like Zero, 2 days ago I was playing fine and then recently I unable to log on, receiving err=058. And it's not a routing issue cause I've tried connected directly and still get the same error.

Also having the same problem.

I've been playing GW for months without changing anything to do with my router at all. Wake up yesterday, run GW (don't even think there was a new update, may have downloaded quicker than I could see) and I've had error 58 ever since.

I have:
~ Put my computer outside the firewall, and then...
~ Deleted the firewall, and then...
~ Thrown several lengthy tantrums...

I've also got 6112 and 80 connecting fine all the way down. No connection failures at all. I guess we're destined to miss Wintersday. I hope whoever's responsible, if somebody is, contracts leprosy. Ho ho ho. (Oh yes, and I've just connected to my wireless router via the direct ethernet cable thingy, and while my internet connection is ever so slightly better, GW's still error 58'ing.)

Same problem too. It seems widespread and affecting European servers especially. Perhaps NCsoft cannot cope with all the connections, and is blocking european connections?

I did the -diag test and all my ports are open and connected successfully.
Im connected via ethernet cable.

I can tell that it doesn't work immedietely, because the window that USUALLY appears next to the login details window on the login screen, does not appear. It holds information like "register a new key" or "Take part in the wintersday festivities". When that window re-appears, the problems are solved. I blame the problem on something server-side.
