Will Paragon be able to exist without a spear?

Yes that example is valid, though I had hoped for a more pvp type of thing.
Pve Paragons are easy to put together. Blazing finale and "They are on fire!" on tanks or pets to improve damage and tanking. Then spam no spec watch yourself to activate blazing finale. Protection and damage at the same time.

I think this is alot of speculation.
We certainly haven't seen all the skills yet, some unknown skills could turn the paragorn into a nice support character.
Or perhaps they will only make it more offensive.
The future holds many secrets...:P

I was running a nice support P/Mo with an insightful staff during the last preview event...seemed to work fine against the CoP Dervish swarms.

The answer to your question is, yes, the Paragon can exist without the spear.
As for the "Why?", you probably won't like the answer.
The Paragon is not primarily designed to do damage. They can if they want, but it isn't necessary. If you have every played L2 in the roll of a blade-dancer you would know that the power of the class comes not from using the twin blades, but from the dances that give your party extra damage, healing, etc.
The paragpn is, like a weaponsmith rit, a buffer. In fact given that the rit had plenty of other rolls, I'd be tempted to say that the paragon is the first REAL buffer guild wars has. No, monks don't count, healers are a class and role of their own.
The power of the build comes in the form of things like "Anthem of Flame" which if you ask me is godly in the right circumstances. "Mending Refrain" gives your party a constant regen, and used in combination with the right shouts can easily last the length of the fight. The spear is there to give the OPTION of damage, just like a ranger and his bow, certainly a ranger is a damage dealer primarily, unlike a paragon, but the class does not need to carry a bow to be useful. An assassin did not need to carry daggers to be useful, critical barrage was shown to work well in certain situations.

So no, a paragon does NOT need his spear. In fact I'd not be surprised if at some stage there is a paragon build running around with a staff for the added energy.

I agree with what you said, but would just like to make a small correction here: I can picture the P wearing a +5 energy sword/axe instead of a staff, with a +30hp mod. Maybe with a "Deep Wound 33% longer" hilt/haft for skills like "Find their Weakness!", or perhaps A.NET will give us a "burning 1 extra second" hilt?

An axe/sword would also make it possible for an offhand, or a motivation/command shield.

Personally I can also see a condition-sword-wielding Paragon: Anthem of Flame, Gash, Sever Artery, Watch Yourself, They're On Fire, and maybe Soldier's Fury or VIM as Elites...

Or an axe user with Anthem of Flame + Cyclone/Triple Chop...

Ditto for a P/R with Barrage...
