Defrag, spyware scan, anti virus scan... and if you do a lot of installing/ uninstalling stuff clean your registry up a bit and see if that helps.

Ok, slow down, take deep breath, and start again...........
What is happening exactly?
Post your PC specs.
And any messages, or errors that occur......
My guess there is some application that is hanging on shutdown that is causing the problem, but what only you can tell us..

sometimes, the sounds get corrupted, and when it tries to play the shutdown sound, it cant and hangs on shutdown.
Try going to controll panel: sounds: then turn off the shutdown sound

Try unplugging all USB devices before shutting down and see if it gets better.
There are many problems related to windows not shutting down at all, and those are pretty difficult to track down. Terminating unneeded services, reinstalling windows, whatever...

I'd wager that it's not a memory leak at all, most probably a lack of memory.
Of your 512MB, Windows XP can easily eat up 200-230MB alone, then add on to that Guild Wars at around 300MB which leaves you with +/-12MB for all other running processes. Try closing down all non-critical processes before playing Guild Wars, that should free up some memory.
