anyone know a good, cheap bow that i could use?
Collectors are your friend, they have perfect max weapons without mods. Upgrade them as desired but note that you cannot salvage them to get upgrades back. The ultimate pet guide: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/content...ide-id1575.php

there's a good guide for weapons that includes a chart describing the different types of bows and there differences here:

Dyon Adell
This dude has the best basic bow without mods.

I like longbow because it has decent flight time, refire rate and a good range. Range means alot to me. If you intend to be a marksman, attacking from distance is a key. And only use bows with the <+15% damage when health is above 50%> mod.
This collector takes Dude Burrower Jaws. You can get each 1 for 100g. At most 200 if the seller is a scrooge. That's somewhere 500-1000g for the perfect bow(though lousy skin). Sundering 20/20 and fortitude bowgrip(30hp) each will cost 20-30k. So you can get your Urgoz's Longbow's equivelant for 100k less. Collectors are for people who want good but common bows. Real cheap, good stats, but not for showing off.

cheap bows equal crappy bows imho. And both equal ineffective ranger.
I would also recommend one of each, a long, a midrange, and a short bow. To really be a true marksman, you need to cover your bases. Long bow is nice but sucks for interrupts and things like choking gas and barrage.
As a ranger, you will be having to acquire a few bows because the profession's versatility requires it. Have only one bow and you limit yourself with your builds.
I would also disagree with distance as being key. Placement vs the opponent as far as height is much more important. A good ranger looks to have the height advantage against his/her opponent, not the distance apart. Distance is only restricted by your bow range. I'd rather be closer to my target and above them in height then farther away and below them.
Lots of times as a ranger you are using skills that increase your damage against your target. Being above them height-wise increases the damage even more and gives you a better chance at a critical hit.

Dyon Adell is right: Sanbert's Ascalon Long Bow is most excellent, and can be augmented with a short bow from Mourn Drakespur and a recurve bow from John Verado as Arturo02 suggests
(http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/General...stal_Desert%29)
You want the short bow for speed and accuracy (but greatly reduced range) and the recurve for accuracy at distance (although not as good as the long bow).

sorry, meant a bow that is subpar. My bad on not claryifying. I agree fully about collector bows.

No single bow can cover all your needs perfectly, though a Longbow is probably the best general purpose compromise.
longest range: flatbows and longbows
fastest refire: flatbows, halfmoons and shortbows
best accuracy: recurve/composite bow
highest damage: horn/ivory/dead bows

I personally use flatbows over longbows. The flight time and arc is a little longer, but the increased refire makes up for it. IMO anyway.

The problem with a longbow, is you are essential cutting your damage by 15%
If you opt for a Longbow, I'd take a short bow to suplement your damage once the mob was engaged. Personally, I do prefer the Flatbow.

shortbow is also the most accurate.
I like the flatbow as well but I'm not a big fan of the arc. But I got a urgoz flatbow drop during the event a few weeks ago and it has earned a place in my weapon 'bar'. Still, seeing the loopy arrow flight does burn my bacon hehe. But what can you do, everything has a downside.
These days I run a short, a composite, a long, and urgoz flat. Mods are a work in progress.

I like the flatbow as well but I'm not a big fan of the arc. Yea, I really only use the flatbow when either RtW or FW are glued to my skill bar. But with either or both of those skills, a flatbow is incredibly accurate, has a nearly flat arc, a very long range, and a very fast refire rate.
If I can't find space for RtW or FW then yea, I use a Longbow (or even the flatbow still) to pull and a short bow for most of the dirty work.
I only ever use a Recurve bow in PvP.
Horn bow's are fun to use in a quickshot build, or with a energy burning TF/Barrage build. But they're not widely useful.

Flatbows are good at any range, you just have to use either FW or RtW.
