WoW convert looking to find a new home :)
BellsBastion
Hi all, I'm a recent WoW convert whose wanting to learn more about the game and get to know some people .
First, I don't have the game yet but I'm browsing around trying to salvage some info. But I want to know if there is a profession that really has potential in PvP, cause i love to PvP
Second, I just wanna make some friends and maybe find a guild.
P.S. I ordered GW:P, all I'll prolly start playing friday if anyone cares.
Thanks in Advance.

well the tried and true profession most people start with is the wammo
BellsBastion
Is that slang for something...'fraid i don't no what a wammo is.
EinherjarMx
wammo IMO is a despective term for Warrior/Monk, one of the easiest characters to use in gw
whobitz
A wammo is a Warrior/Monk. It used to be a derogatory slang term, but now it's just general usage for most people. And it's the class a lot people start with because it's easy to play and helps you learn the game.
Sli Ander
Slang for Warrior/monk. A lot of new players use them for the monks healing power, so they have a bad rep for being idiots. At the moment, Assassins have the same problem because the difficulty in finding one that is good at it.
Back on topic: Warrior is a good way to go if you like dealing damage(with armor and whatnot you have room for error as you adjust to this game)
I'm told mesmer is tremendous at pvp, but it will take some work to get to that level. They require good timing and a bit of experience with what skills other people tend to use. If you decide to go that way, try using a prebuilt one and tweaking it as you learn.
See ya round the game...

Warrior is a great class to PvE through the game with. It's fun, resilient, and does a lot of damage. Just make sure you equip a lot of damage skills, and don't waste spots on 'tanking' skills which are more often than not a wate of space (Watch Yourself! is all you really need).

Like the others, I suggest a warrior as a starting class. The class is easy to step into and do carnage as long as you don't put too much trust into your self healing (or lack of it, which is where the term wammo is most often used). If you'd prefer a spellcaster I suggest you try an elementalist. They are a bit more difficult to step into then a warrior, but are pretty basic as well.
Note; even if the two classes I mentioned are easier to play doesn't make them any less powerful then others, every possible combination has possibilities so feel free to mix and match around. Just be aware that warriors shouldn't be using too many spells and elementalists shouldn't be charging into combat

Mesmer's the most unique class and has great potential in both PvE & PvP.
There's nothing quite like it in any other game, and for me it's the star of the core professions.
Core professions are Elementalist, Mesmer, Monk, Necromancer, Warrior and Ranger.
Elementalists are best equated with WoW mages.
Monks with Priests.
Necromancers with Warlocks (and a bit of D2 Necromancer).
Warriors is warriors.
Rangers are Hunters.
But there's no equivalent to the Mesmer in WoW.
And they get the most dapper armour too

For sure start the game as a Warrior/monk, or Warrior/ranger, both are lots of fun and easy to learn, then you can make the second most popular class a monk. and then casting class after that. I tryed ele first and got stuck, every party needs warriors and monks. with those you will enjoy the pve game the most, Come to think of it, PVP uses warriors and monks MOST of the time too...good luck have fun, and message me in game if you need help
FyrFytr998
Exactly, your playstyle will determine what class you'll play. And if you're looking for a class always in need. It'd be the Monk types that heal or protect other players.
Zinger314
What class did you enjoy playing in WoW? Play the class that's closest to it.
Kakumei
The most important thing is to not view GW as an alternative to WoW.
obsidian shard
currently a pvp player, i think eles are in high demand now, although mesmer is the best class for me.
wammo is for pve ffs
wammo is for pve ffs
Eviance
I know everyone here is saying wammo, but to be honest, you will NOT get a pvp group very fast being a wammo because as you can see a lot of people have wammos. HOWEVER if you intend to play through the game as many classes and only do pvp minimally till you get the majority of unlocks then wammo is just fine to go with and I would highly recommend it.... Or monk cause it makes getting a group easier ~_^
Warders (aka elementalists) & monks are something that pvp will want and need no matter what. It's unlikely to ever see a group without a monk unless its a complete damage build. And Warders are becoming a staple food of balanced and odd groups everywhere.
Mesmers are complex but very fun to play, as are necros - both these classes can easily get a group as well.
Rangers cannot find a pve group for nothing half the time, but its easier for them to find a group in pvp.
I would say play what you know you can handle and are comfortable with. Not everyone is cut out to play monk, mesmer, warrior and so on... If you start playing and can't get a handle on the class you picked.. start over or work harder.
(I can't play a monk to save my own life, let alone anyone elses, but let me at any other class and its heaven.)

In guild wars you can't jump to pvp right away, but try out the warrior class first since it's easy to use. There also a lot of terms in pvp. And yes yo'll really love the pvp in this game, except for the rude idiots you'll meet in it as well =P.
martialis
Warrior, monk, and ranger are the easiest classes to learn and also the most versatile for soloing and playing specialised roles. They have lots of depth to them, and they're popular in pvp, so if you want to complete the pve game with one or two characters and then keep them, those are good choices. Monks can see the actions of all party members, both the adept and the inept, which is educational and frustrating. Mesmers are easy to play in pve, and making a mesmer will let you try out all of their skills before you use them in pvp.
But all classes are pvp classes, so it doesn't matter much. (But I'd recommend one of those four.)

He can test out any of the premade builds and unlock skills with Balthazar faction and create any build with skills he unlocks.
For the original poster...
I would test out all the premade PvP characters and see if you like those. You will be able to unlock other skills for your PvP characters, as well as weapon upgrades and armor runes, with faction you earn from PvP battles.
You can also unlock those things for PvP in PvE by earning/buying those skills and finding items with runes/weapon upgrades on them.
There is also a new option to buy all prophecies skills for your PvP characters through the GW store that you can access after creating an account and get to the character screen. It costs $40 but gets you into PvP with any build you want quickly.
I suggest browsing the PvP forum here on Guru for character builds too.

I thought the equivalent to the mesmer was that warden guy... I havent played WoW, I think that's what they're called.

im my honest opinion i think making your first character a wammo is the WORST idea possible... it basically puts the game on very easy, and you dont get to learn alot other then put mending on and solo everything.
i suggest you pick the class that is closest to the one you had in WoW. or you can just create a char for each class and test em out and see which one you like the best.

Anyways, start the game with a character that doesnt need a lot of maintanence, aka a warrior or ele or necromancer (curses perhaps, or blood). MM is a bit harder to maintain properly.... and 90% of the MMs in the game ATM are terrible.
MirkoTeran
Anything but another wammo will be good. There is already way way to many of them.
torquemada
Wammo is fine and dandy, IMO, if played right.
For the OP, you should already be familiar with roles of classes, which to some degree correspond to those of WoW in PvE.
Play PvE for starters, learn, watch the aggro (there's no threat, but there's aggro range), follow called targets, etc. The build should not present a problem while learning PvE part, anything goes, you'll learn skills during your adventures.
As for PvP, play PvE for a while to learn game mechanics, then switch to PvP, but be mindful of the fact that tactics and builds are totally different than those in PvE.

Don't mind about people telling you "this is easy/to hard to start with". The best prof to start with is the prof that you like the most. If you want, you may play around with PvP template characters - they are viable builds and can give you some insight into proffesions of guild wars.
@Some people responding to this thread. OP wasn't asking about your oppinions on whammos, but asked for help with choosing his prof. Stay on topic pls.

A wammo is the same as a loladin in WoW.
It's more a state of mind than the actual class/profession.

Play a ranger and smite anyone who tells you otherwise.
Rangers are a well balanced class thats are well though out for both the PvP and PvE aspects of the game.

Don't start with a Wammo. They are largely reviled and, dare I say, rightly so. I'd go with a Necro honestly, as they are versatile and deal with many aspects of the game's mechanics. Ranger would be good as well, but they are less sought-after in most of PvE.
Legendary Battousai
skip pve and go to pvp!
Phrozenflame
If you want to get rich, get a Necro. There are many places where you can farm and earn money where a Necro is needed and Necro does some classy damage So I suggest you do that
Angel Develin
Agree on the necro, great class. also mesmers are very good and rangers this 3 can make a lot of cash and are very fun to play with both in pve and pvp.the rest should be as a 2nd character imo.

My first toon was a Mesmer, and I have never regretted it. The advantages of starting with a Mesmer are:
1) You learn all the other professions out of necessity; Mesmer is the counter class.
2) Mesmer is perhaps the most devistating profession in both pve and pvp, for any area or situation the Mesmer can be effective, speeding kills and preventing harm.
3) Mesmer primary attribute Fast Casting is helpfull for any casting secondary.
4) Riverdance, and the most stylish armor .
The disadvantages of starting as a Mesmer are
1) It can be difficult to get a PvE PUG esp. in Prophecies, many PvE players simply don't understand Mesmers, and why they own.
2) Mesmer is probably the most complicated profession.
Other good starter classes:
Monk: allways in demand, people might complain about your healing. This is especially true of Wammos who run far ahead of the group and die then complain about not being healed and harass you to rez them mid battle as if you had unlimited mana and no one else to use it on but them.
Ranger: The easiest class to play well imho. Many people say wammo is the easiest but there are far more really bad wammos then really bad rangers. Sort of a jack of all trades, ranged attacks and the ability to have a pet thats equivelent to a tank insulate the ranger from danger and allow more room for mistakes.
Necro: Many skills that hurt the enemy while healing you, you can raise minion armies(generally effective after level 10) and you have the best energy management in soul reaping(you get energy when stuff dies).

Welcome to GW
In my opinion Monk is a great place to start..... You'll learn alot about other classes/monsters/damage.
You'll always be needed in PvE & PvP.
In PvE you can farm and run very successfully.
You'll receive the Love
You'll receive the Hate
But thats just my view! Play whatever your comfortable with and have fun!

I recommend Ranger/Necromancer or Warrior/Necromancer for beginning players. Lots of build flexibility that lets you learn about the game. Also, when you create a casting-class character later on, you'll have some feel for it because of the Necromancer secondary.
Recommended strategies:
R/N: Good combination for weakening enemy combat classes and interrupting/shutting down casters. Marksmanship, Expertise, and Curses are good attribute lines to pull from.
W/N: The skill Plague Touch will be extremely useful for keeping yourself clean of conditions like Blind and Weakness--I never take my Warrior into PvE without it. All three weapon lines are useful, but I find Axes to be the best for PvE. Melee-range necromancer skills can also be effective.

For the OP: Welcome to Guild Wars! I think you're getting good advice on a profession, but as mentioned here, your choice really depends on your play style. I can play Warrior just fine, and I like it a lot, but for me, Ranger or Elementalist is a bit more my style of playing. Too, keep in mind that with Guild Wars, you are a two-profession character, so you have a lot of choices! I'd recommend that you choose what you like to play, based on the descriptions of the professions in this thread, or in the game manuals. Incidentally, you can obtain both manuals in PDF form here.
Overnite
Prophecies are rather dead these days, except for the grinding zones so I recommend rolling a monk to get the most of your 2 weeks worth of PvE content.
Markaedw
OP there is a lot of good advice here, but no one is telling you the other side of the game.
Don't play the assassin ever! No one likes the assassin, no one lets the assassin in their group.
Do your research, find the cookie cutter build for the class you want to play, thats the only way you can get in groups.
Learn to work with henchies, they are your best friends.
Forget about a place called Sorrow's Furnace, only famers live there.
I forgot about the Hall Of Heros (HoH) the peak, the in, of PvP battle. Of course you need to be rank 6 or above to get in, and you can't get rank untill you get in.
On that happy note, I'm off to join WoW, where everyone I know plays.

I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. I simply meant getting good at pvp as in, getting used to the game to be a good pvper. And no, I've been pvping for a long time now and had left pve since. I'm well aware of pvp created characters and pre-made builds.
