auction cheating or just coincidence?

I've seen several auctions already wich present kinda low s/bs but then someone else go and bid a much higher price in the first bid

This is an example of what I'm trying say:

http://www.guildwarsguru.com/auction...php/id=215060/

S/B 100k
First bid made for someone 200k

DOUBLE !!

I know it may be coincidence that someone just think that's a good offer so he bids that high in the first bid, but I've seen so many auctions with same pattern that I think those are bids from "friends" to increase the value of the item

Cheating or coincidence?

It's coincidence. I think it's important to keep in mind that users tend to enter their own maximum bids, assuming that the system will only use up what is "needed" to win an auction, effectively creating a buffer to automatically outbid future bidders. In this case, the total amount of the first bid was used because the auction included a reserve price that was not met by the maximum offer of the first bidder.

If there had been no reserve price, entering 200K by the first bidder would only have resulted in a 100K bid, but automatically increased bids if other bidders had bid 105K, 110K etc.

also some ppl enter a higher bid to deter others from bidding, those with a limited budget often set out with a price they are willing to pay..some ppl including me would offer higher just to decrease the chance of having to go into a bid war with someone that will eventually lose out..it saves time but does sometimes come back to bite you in the ass

having a friend bid tho it is frowned upon does increase the price..to be rich you have to play dirty once in a while

id just like to point out that you can actually outbid yourself.

the system wont tell you "oh you bid on that already".

=.= i accidentally jacked the price up on something against myself because my pc lagged and it went through twice. The second time it told me my bid wasnt enough, so i thought someone had bid the same time i did.

Admin's bane and Dralspire said the same thing in different contexts and slightly different reasons.

Its how auctions work.

If something is 100gp with 100gp increments, and I bid 1,000,000gp - I dont actually pay 1,000,000gp. My bid will show to the world as 100gp. Then anytime anyone trys to outbid me - It'll auctomatically outbid them for me to the next increment -up to 1,000,000gp of course.

so, if you have 2 friend and they both bid 200k on a the item, then they would both outbid each other constantly and end up on the 200k?

one would be told to bid higher by the system just like ebay

To Admins BAne ---> but even if you try to post higher than the s/b to avoid other bidders the system will post the s/b and not your highest bid. That's why I was suspicious about the first offer being so high

Of course the reserve thing has explained it all ^^

Yes!! Finally someone noticed this bull*hit!!
I just wanted to make my own thread about this when I noticed this one.
I can't believe the mods are not noticing this lately. There's is clear faking and cheating going on in the auctions. I contantly see people selling crappy items for outrageous prices that NOONE would ever bid.

Every day I see a guy selling a garbage shield for a very large sum.
Here's an example:

OMG!!!! LOOK!! AWESOME MAGMAS SHIELD!!

I look, and I see a shitty +28hp req 13 magmas shield with a bid of 600+k!!!!

Or here's a nother one:

OMG PERFECT ETHERNAL SHIELD!!!

I look, and see a shitty req 12 ethernal shield with 10 vs. piercing and 45 enchanted for 650k!!!! The funny part is that the person took his time to type up a bunch of nonsence explaining how this shield can be super good for this or that. He goes even further to lie about how he sees only one shield like this in the auctions, and it's 1.2mil!!! What a bunch of BS.
First of all, ethernal shields are NOT rare for a long time now. It is somewhat rare to see an ethernal shield with perfect dual mods, but even these are not that uncommon. the 10 piercing mod is crap, and it is NOT rare at all. I see these every day and I can easily get one for 2-5k. Yes piercing is useful for PvP and some farms, but it's not like that alone makes it worth 600k....
I honestly cant imagine any ethernal shield no matter how godly to be worth more than 300-400k with all this duo/solo UW farming going on.

I cant believe that noone notices that whoever bids these unreal amounts of gold almost ALWAYS has a feedback of zero or one!!! Isnt it obvious that the bidder's account is fake and made only to inflate the price? The seller of the item should be banned right there, just for that.

The sad part is that there's some clueless people that might be inclined to bid, just because they see a high price. There are some people that think that if the item is high priced, than it MUST be good.

Also, all these auctions above are a violation of the forum rules. Isnt it written somewhere in the rules that you cant use words like "SUPER" "OMG" "GODLY" "ULTRA RARE" and the like??

Before you get yourself all outraged There are thousands of auctions, reporting some would be great, have you taken the time? And the moderators do not oversee the auction system. Perhaps now would be a time to open up for discussion how widespread the problem is and we can take action such as seeing if we need to bring in 2 or 3 people to help moderate the auction system.

Hey man.. It's cool. If I'm giving the impression that I'm pissed at the mods or otherwise.. I'm sorry. I dont mean to sound this way.

I just wanted to point out a problem, and I'm hoping people take notice.

Thanks for all your feedback. I think there are really two issues. When it comes to prices, I agree that some sellers have slightly unjustified expectations. I would like to think that the market will correct those excessive expectations, and I don't see a need to act on that.

Having said that, some sellers then resort to fraud for the purpose of realizing their excessive expectations. Obviously that is not acceptable, and we both monitor for the problem as well as work on additional solutions to prevent such occurrences. The same applies to fraudulent bids from parties that either don't intend to follow through on their bids or intend to disrupt auctions of other users for the purpose of benefiting a third auction for a similar item. Either way, fake accounts get banned as quickly as we can verify their status.
