How to lvl a pet to an elder

Well I wanted a hog so I went a tamed a lvl 5 one but, I want it to be an elder not hearty or dire is there a certain way to kill monsters or something to make him to an elder, or is it just luck he becomes a elder? Thanks for any help

Somewhere between making it take lot of damage while dying often and making it take little damage while dying rarely.
Damage may be a factor as well so maybe let the pet tank, heal it, and use pet attacks.

So what is the difference between hearty, dire adn elder, and how do you know which your pet is?

heh, my advice to make elder would be level is to aggresive at level 11 on minotaurs using 'old skool dire training' THEN level him the rest of the way in tombs b/p with beastmastery at 1
