"use the search button"

I am sick and tired of people comming into a thread just to dismiss it and say some crap like that.

Do you realize how many threads are on these boards? If everytime someone wanted to post something, but didn't because SOMEONE posted something similar already, we'd have almost no community here at all.

Do you ever stop to consider maybe people have their own insight to add on a subject? Maybe they don't want to just post in a year-old thread where signifcantly fewer people will read it...

Yea, if there a thread right on the FRONT PAGE, go ahead and post in that, but if I have something I wana say I'm not gonna go digging around through dusty old posts and hop into a discussion that died long ago. Honestly, if these people constantly telling people to use the search really were so concerned about spam, they wouldn't be spending time telling other people what to do.

Do us all a favor and STFU about this. If it's seriously something that's over-posted, a mod will close it like they always do. No one needs your critizism and input.

(and no, I'm not ranting because people keep telling ME to use the search, I'm just sick of seeing it in every other thread.)

Oh and another thing that ticks me off... when people actually DO use the search button, they get critisized for bumping old threads! Seriously people need to mind their own damned buisiness.

We enjoy deleting spam posts just as much as we do closing threads, actually. Report the posts saying "use search" (which are, technically, spam unless they include a link to a relevant thread) and they won't be there too long.

Just be sure to read the stickies beforehand to avoid any potential embarassment, as there are often useful links to be found there.

My post definitley wasn't spam. I agreed with the OP and was simply adding my two cents.
So I added a jab at the mods, big deal, you guys can't take some good natured ribbing?
If you didn't wan't people to respond then why is the thread still open?

Your post was a mod complaint. I deleted it for that. I don't care if it's in good nature or not, it's rude and a disservice to those who try to keep the forums in order.

Oh and another thing that ticks me off... when people actually DO use the search button, they get critisized for bumping old threads! Seriously people need to mind their own damned buisiness. you do realize how often the same threads are repeated right? thread after thread about the same topic, each person thinking they're the first person to think of this on a forum with at least 400 members on at any one time? 100,000 registered users? 2 or 3 people will post a thread on the same topic, in the same forum, with the same comments within 1 or 2 days of each other or less. 99% of those people haven't searched, or looked through the titles on the first page, let alone the second.

You may be sick of people telling others to use search, the rest of us are sick of seeing the same threads posted over and over. And frankly mods often miss these threads. often. So fine, i'll start reporting the threads as bad posts, if you stfu and report my "use search" posts as bad posts.

My problem is that the advanced search is not specific enough, I tend to get way too many posts that are not relavent. Trying to sift through all the posts that come up can take a while, if I am lucky I might find what I am looking for. A lot of times I just give up. And with all the people that are saying "use the search button" I just don't post at all.

It's fine to encourage people to search, study, ponder, THEN post. BUT there is nothing wrong with looking for new, clear, and accurate information. One of the wonders of the online guru family is the collective experience and information availible. If you don't like 'reading the same posts over and over again' then don't read them. If someone has an intellegent question about a subject that has been discussed before, then there is nothing wrong or even hard about posting a link that you're aware of. It's much easier for me to look for a post I know is relevant and recent, especially when I already know where to look. But for someone who is bringing something new to them to the boards, it's a daunting task to shift through all the information that search produces.

Granted, people sometimes want things handed to them and are too lazy to read anything, and then I wholeheartedly agree that they deserve the lectures on searching, especially when a subject is already on the same page.
