Best Ranger pet?
Absolute Destiny
In your opinion, what animal is the best for a Ranger pet?
I'm currently using a Melandru's Stalker, and it's working fairly well...considering I'm barely in post-searing Ascalon.

To the Op.
All pets, Except bear, have the same attack speeds. The bear is slower because it uses a skill (brutal maul) which slows it down but adds no additional damage.
All pets do physical damage, althouth some do slashing, piercing etc...
Base your choice of pet on which you like to look at the best. I have a Black Widow (Prophesies) on my Ranger, a Black Mao (Factions) on my Monk, and I think I'll cap the Pheonix (Factions) next. I also like the Crab (Factions) and Crane (Factions) and regular Mao (Prophesies).
Dougal Kronik
Melandru Stalker from Pre-Searing! Had it since I started playing!
Doesn't really matter, thay are all pretty equivalent except for the attack speed of the Bear. Read up on Jenosavel's and Epiniphrine's Pet Guide.

The rabbit would be the best pet by far, but we're not allowed to cap it
On the other spectrum a lvl 20 Hearty Strider is by far the hugest pet you will ever see. It's fun to have. I have a lvl 20 Dire Strider and it's still amazingly huge. I dunno how big the Crane gets in comparison.
Basically, find something you like the looks of and use it.
If you're wondering in terms of Dire, Elder, or Hearty. Most ppl would be fine with a hearty, which just means your pet died a lot when it was lvling and now has more HP. See that Pet Guide on how to make it Dire if you want to use it for dmg, or Elder if you'd like to be in between the two and have balanced dmg/hp.

i prefer the black moa bird which you can cap during a quests on the Kurzick side. On the quest you have to kill the pet but if you cap the pet it is counting "killing"
- btw if you have henchies with you they will attck the pet while you are caping it ( as henchies will attack any thing hostile ) but the black moa is lvl 20 and you should be half way or 1/3 done with the capping by the time the henchies attack it.
- FYI the black moa will always be there after just incase you thorw it away and then want another one
- the black moa as far as i know isnt dire, elder or anything like that

Elder Crab On the Boreas Seabed. It starts at level 20 no wait for leveling it, Two run at you right away in the begining of the mission. Tame it while a couple henchies fiight other things then leave. There are Elder Tigers out there but not sure where.
Electric Sky
if i had a ranger i would go for a white tiger

Truong
I have a Phoenix at the moment, but I've had a Melandru's Stalker & a White Tiger before. Those made great pets.
Mournblade
I had a white tiger but I found I actually prefer a regular tiger. I guess I just like the bright orange. =)
Shadowfox1125
I have a Dire White Tiger on my Warrior, and a Hearty Snow Wolf on my Ranger.
You can find an Elder White Tiger outside of Jade Flats; you can also find a Dire Tiger(orange) outside of Boreas. You can charm then granted you get there before the Ranger bosses charm them.

the pets that give some symbol of status are:
1. Black Widow - I sign that the owner either is experienced, or payed someone to get them there (shrug)
2. Phoenix - Only available if you can beat Factions
3. Melandru Stalker - Rare, however there is one single stalker in Post-Searing, so I guess its not really THAT special - still it has a certain nostalgia to it, and they look cool.
4. Bears - Taming one in pre-searing is an achievement. Sometimes they will 'whoa' ppl because they arent too common. As far as brutal mauling goes, I dont think it 'only' slows the attack speed. Its unconfirmed what it does... otherwise its dumb to have a bear. You can cap a bear in S.Shiverpeaks anyways. I have one on my warrior
5. Strider - Nothing special, but there are no striders outside presearing (only Moas) Looks just like a moa anyways- above poster suggests that they are slightly larger than their moa counterparts, which is kind of neat.
6. Black Moa - You spent a lot of time running back and forth for Kurz quests. Either that, or you team up with someone who already did the quest (shrug, theyre kind of common and they remind me of 80s metal bands) I have one on my rit.
basically, in the end, its all just what looks good to you. Personally, I really enjoy the Dune Lizard.

I have Dire White tiger on my ranger called Shar, and a specifically un-evolved (so he didnt grow) lvl 20 Warthog called Snapple on my monk (goes well with my cute lil fungal wallow ^_^).
As the other posters have said, base the choice on your favourite appearance, since their difference in stats is so minor that most people wouldn't notice them

The 'best' pets are what I call 'ascended' pets. These pets are Black Widows (prophecies), and Pheonixes (factions).
I think theres not that much difference so I have a bear. If you don't like me having a bear then you can leave and get another group thats obsessed with being absolutely perfect and no 14^50, health +29 weapons are allowed.

Crabs are the coolest. End of discussion.
Lol! I love my crab, I really do.

I agree I like my pet crab. I used to have a Melandru Stalker but got bored of him so now have a crab. caped at boreas sea bed of course
My Rit/Ranger has a Tiger.

http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Animal_companion -- do not use bear, spider, dune lizard if you gunna pvp with the pet;
bear: slow attack speed, worthless
spider, dune lizard: piercing damage, crappy [nercos armor, shield's up, geoffer's bulwark, etc]

Nothing special about a Strider, it's simply a level 1 Moa. If you charm a Strider in pre the name will change to Moa Bird at level 2 or 3 or something like that.
Since I've trained my Phoenix to Dire that is the status I hold most vallue to in regards to pet because it's a lot of (mindnumbing) work.

You know this sort of rmeinds me about that time I was in HA and we were in one of those 'get your hero to the platform and make sure he doesnt get kicked off maps'. We were against a b-spike, but a few mins after the fight started an enemy crab came up to me. I was like, WTF? B-spike with a crab?!?!
I know that's a bit off topic but crabs are funny.

lol the crab b-spike thing made me laugh :P
ye my ranger got widow from uw, long long long time ago i joined a 4 man trapping group, talked with em and we decided to get some widows, 3 out of 4 needed a spider, well we made all 3 runs, took us like 6 hours coz we also visited some smites, and ye that was some nice time :P and as far as i remember i got all 3 ecto drops ^^
so ye, paying for a spider is kinda lame in my eyes :/, its a rare pet just go and do something for it if u really want one, my opinion....

dire strider, dire phoenix

meh...i think most ranger pets are useless in terms of just haivng one BUTIf your a beast master...they can do some damage, plus no one expects a ranger to use a pet unless you make it obvious.I use a necro staff for energy so they think im a touch...then my lil white tiger(Bob Marley)Mauls them to death

Plushie Penguin
anything other then a bear, they may look good to some people, but they have a slower attack speed then the rest[all the other pets are the same in stats, excluding damage type]
stalkers

Trvth Jvstice
@ Plushie penguin~ about bears, I took a character through pre recently just to get a good no-req longbow for pulling. Every time I went into Foibles Fair, there were people there asking for help to charm a bear or people offering to help with charming a bear. I always let them know in all chat, "bears have the slowest attack rate of all the pets, but do the same dmg." I was ignored.
This has been going on every since I started playing GW. Why do people in pre insist on charming bears?

Other wise, its really just about which one you think looks better, because they all have teh same stats, exept the bear that attacks slower and the few that do peircing damage.
dgb
Bears are unconditionally the worst pets. Slow attack speed for stupid animations.
Black Widows and Dune Lizards are second worst, their piercing damage means that they are going to do less against bonelace and shields up than any other pet.
The rest are all on an even footing, although I don't know of any research into the Factions pets.

The Black Moa is considered Elder for stats purposes, which is the same as saying it's unevolved. It gains no bonus or penalty to it's health and damage. Since it is already level 20 it cannot be trained out of this. It's purpose is to just look cool.
N E D M
interestingly i believe the warthog is the only pet who does blunt damage.
and "brutal mauling" does seem to do more damage than a standard attack, but bears are slow and kind of dumb (dont rush in as readily as the others)
crabs are good because they are sneaky with the low profile.

crabs are good because they are crabs, and you can name them "I pinch" or "Mr Snips".

Crabs!! (aka reef lurkers) are the most adorable! I have a red one, my guildee has the blue (so we dont get them confused in a battle).....and I wish they would have gotten bigger, my wolf was the biggest pet I had seen in quite sometime......and always got the comment "thats a mightly big wolf you have"....
