Of course, why wouldn't you be able to? It's a regular weapon after all.

It already has one upgrade automatically on it, so you can only add a pommel. I made the mistake on mine about forgetting and buying a hilt instead :/

you can just override the hilt though, cant you?

correct me if i'm wrong but as far as i know u cant replace the fiery hilt on FDS and the icy hilt on IDS

No, the icy hilt is static and irreplaceable. That is the inherent negative to these (and the fiery versions) fine looking weapons; you cannot change the damage type from the fixed elemental damage it drops as.
