The first thing you should know about Guild Wars is that it's a balanced game. There is rarely an overall 'best'.

As a necromancer, Monk is a popular choice. Heal Area is useful if you play an MM, and Soul Reaping can help to power utility skills like Extinguish.

If you want to be a minion master pick nec/monk otherwise pick nec/mes

Being a MM-(minoin master) you have to sacrifice health to keep your minions alive/ so monk is the best secondary to keep your health up after you sacrifice health. All of the other popular nec builds requires mesmer as the seconndary.-----except the 55 necro. This is solely a farming build though.

Mesmer is the best hands down - at times your biggest problem as a necro is lack of energy and the mesmer gives you an easy way to get energy.

how much soul reaping do you use that energy would be a problem? I can see that in random or team arenas, but everywhere else a good 9 or 10 in soul reaping is amazing.

Well casting a spell that costs 25 energy is a problem for most necros with the "default" energy pool - soul reaping requires something to die, so it's very situational and having energy giving skills greatly adds to your spellcasting.

Obviously it completely depends on your build, if you don't use any high energy cost spells it obviously is less of a problem.

EDIT: And I'm not suggestion NOT to take 9-10 in soul reaping, I just think it's a pain to be standing around waiting for energy to recharge and thus Mesmer makes it easy to get some energy quick when nothing is dying.

just say "kill things plz" to your team. works for thumpway.

and OOB is always nice.

I can't think of many 25 energy necro spells besides well of the profane (falls into the kill things plz category) and minions, which now recycle themselves for energy.

"Kill things plz" works for all aspects of the game.

and if you play PVE like PVP, you remember PVE is really easy and then you remember why you don't do it and your ranger is still two missions away from beating the game and has been for 2 months.

Well PvE often means mostly henchies

Btw. there are five 25 energy spells, 3 Death Magic and 2 Curses - personally I like Vampiric Horrors and they are 25 Energy.

To answer your first question, the "best" profession is the one you like to play most. Each one has its merits and disadvantages. Try a few different ones to see which one you like.

I'm enjoying my relatively new necro/ranger using a couple of traps with either blood spells or MM. For PvE you don't need any type of uber build to beat the game, play something you enjoy.

In PvE energy is no problem for a Necro. Particularly if he brings energy management skills. Wink wink.

I have, personally, always had monk as my first secondary profession on all my existing characters. I highly recommend it.

I'd say Ranger is my "best" primary profession.

Secondary profession would be monk for the hard res.

Go with either N/Mo or N/Me.

Please do not become one of those Blood/Fire Necros nor a "Meleemancer."
