That "virgin" feeling
Tark Alkerk
Despite the slightly dirty conatations from the title,
i am talking about the fact that everyone seems to want to make the lastest instalment of guild wars more like the original.
well i say you can't.
i remember playing guild wars for the first time, and thinking that conjure phatasasm was an effect to keep me wondering off the path, heh silly me, i continued playing and game had a almost dream like quality, as i stumbled around ascalon city talking to gwen and that sort of ilk,
my first few days of were certainaly the most i have ever come to playing a story through any of these games.
but after a while i wised up to the fact conjure phantasm was actually a spell for mesmers and everything took a violent turn to cold hard precision.
its like the first time you go on a brillant holiday to a certain place abd have a great time. you go again and again over the years and although the place hasn't changed, you think it has.
so in essance A-net isn't changing the game radically everytime.
you are changing, great becomes the norm after a while.

I haven't seen that many people wanting expansions to be like Prophecies. Certainly not enough to warrant a whole thread to counter it....

I know what you're talking about, it's good to be a noob. One can think that with each chapter you can have that feeling again, but no you know too much to be innocent again.
Nexium
well the longer you have played and still get an expansion it's still nott the same ''Wow'' Factor like it was when you just started to play the game since in the expansions you pretty much now how things work nothing mystical...

I thought that was just people being pissy because you can't be run around the map like in Proph.

yes, yes, I remember that time, when the mechanics of the game weren't apparent, and the story brought some surprise and progression. When I first played factions, it seemed the whole thing was a lot less... mysterious. Not only I knew how the game worked; the whole skill, experience and wealth progression seemed very rushed. Maybe if nightfall brings a stronger storyline and more deliberate pace, it'll bring back that sense of discovery. Here's one hoping it does.

Not going to happen on the time scale They have to stick to, if you dont like the first few weeks, wait 3 weeks before you play

actually i just read the feature on nightfall in pc gamer last night and i have i hopes that even if my first virgin romantic weeks with prophecies aren't recreated, that it may be just as exciting and fresh,.
the story this time sounds pretty interesting, involving a 5th hereto unknown god. the dervish has some sort of skill that allows him or her to transform into an avatar of a god and also wield some godly powers. a larger world to explore, some how linked to elona - i always found the desert quite beautiful and mysterious. who doesn't remember the challenge of trying to get past all those mesmer floating squid mobs outside of that one town.
plus mini games involving ale, dancing, riding wurm mounts and fighting flying enemies with wings or floating trees. what could be cooler? the scenery looks awesome.. i love floating castles.
then there's a really desolate realm that looks quite a challenge, and another area that you can't map - sounds like uw/fow =)
i mean with a monster caled "realm of tormet mesmer" how can i not be excited?
here's to another "first time"!

Yeah my first run through factions, I was actually AMAZED at how COOL the city was....
Now im like everyone else "get me outta this SH hole!"
I got that feeling again the first time I got to Boreas Seabord and that first run across the Jade Sea. I knew at that time that I was destined to be luxon.

painful but great good feeling after.

i want nightfall to be more like prophesies in that it is longer PvE wise, more intersting in its story line, and well I dont wanna be able to beat it with my 6 characters(2 of which started after the release) in under a week. THATS what i want to be more like prophs. cause i dont care what ANYONE says, factions was a lot shorter than prophosies. there were less missions and most of the missions took less than 15 minutes to beat. NO missions took as long as any of the RoF missions and half of them were as quick as the ascolon missions. LUCKILY, the developers have already told us that nightfall will sport 20 new missions(factions had a whole 13) each of which taking 45 minutes to a couple of hours. as long as thats true, i WILL be buying chapter 4

Insightful thoughts.

Here's hoping that we all get that feeling again.

Well.. thats what reapeating activity of doing the same thing do to you... it bore you. Just like most are bore of our every day life, and need to escape into a game.
What I really miss are the E3fE (the first public beta).... that was like 4 day of heaven... and it was so fun because you know you only get 4 day of it. That is when game start be more like a game, and not like a life-choice.

i remember when i very first logged on the game...My friend got me to play it and was trying to figure out what district to meet me in...and for some reason it keept seeming like i changed district A LOT because i keep going in and out and it would randomlly stick me in a district (I laughed about this for a bit after i figured it out) Well after 2 hours of trying to find her she just stayed put and i finally ran into her in one of the random districts...ahh the good old time...How i miss them

Its fun to learn stuff. And we all learned to play the guild wars game model with prophecies. Factions was partially a disappointment due to the fact everyone now knew how to play (ok, most of us) and there was very little of the learning component. Without anything to learn there was just the business portion of the game. Leveling a character, finishing the game, making money to buy armour etc.

would you share it?
I read the OP's post several times and still made no sense.

There recently was a thread called "the true reason for the factions hate" or something like that and I really do think the "virgin feeling" many people had with prophecies is a reason for some people not liking factions as much.

Yeah I agree =P
Factions wasn't that bad but not only was the whole "new amazing game" feeling gone...but the story was kinda weak too (with only 13 missions and stuff). However...who knows what a stronger storyline would do? =p (seeing as the team that did proph is doing nightfall)

lol @ OP...........i thought conjure phantasm was a spell that brought those devours up from the ground. because they pop up at about the same time as the gargoles would cast it, bear in mind that at the time you couldnt just read the spell off the enemy casters...anyway, good times, i to would spend all my gold to start over and feel that rush of new areas, and new enemys, new weapons..........thank God for updates/expansions

i spent about a month in pre-searing with 2-3 characters, trying to figure out which one I liked best. Then I finally went to post-searing. The place was huge! And I absolutely couldn't find my way around the new partially destroyed Ascalon.
I ran outside alone (hadn't figured out henches yet lol) and after about 45 seconds met with a gargoyle. I was dead within a few moments (my poor wammo!). I immediately deleted that char and went back to pre for another few weeks.
Eventually I figured out post searing and had 3 lvl 20 chars and had beaten the game with 2 of them when Factions came out.
While Factions is certainly a beautiful game. I never had that feeling of awe that Tyria had given me (my first mmorpg). I pretty much knew how to play my assassin just by looking at the skills and attributes. I zoomed through most of the quests and missions and was at lvl 20 in no time. Same with my Rt.
I wonder if players that started with Factions had the same the feelings of awe and discovery when they first started the game? I kinda doubt it.
