Hours of farming? Try months of farming. I've only had 4-5 black dyes drop for me in the ~2,500 hours I've played Guild Wars.

I've had 5 black dye drops in the 11 months I've been playing. It's probably been 6 months since my last drop. Sold one gave the others to friends.

the fastest one of my characters got one is 19 minutes in presear while i was looking for skale fins to do the belt pouch trade
my best drop was a group of stone elementals outside the sanitarium that dropped a black/silver
after the black/silver the next best was a silver/silver
the rarest was a worthless tripple of blue/orange/green

OK ignore these noobs this is how you do it:
Buy 100 ecto and 100 shards from the trader. Go outside, drop them and logg off. When u come back on youll ahve one black dye.
