How long did you wait? Many, including me, have noticed slower connections lately, but the longest it has taken me to connect is about 10 seconds.

Well reinstalling the game isnt the solution. Maybe a program is blocking it like PeerGuardian or some AV, or you have the needed ports disabled on your router.

connecting that was my big problem when that big update came... what I did was very simple and very easy to do open guild wars once your at the log in screen look at the upper right hand side of your screen you should see a lightning bolt symbol that is saying its uploading files for the guild wars sever (if you see numbers going up that is) if you see that happening just go watch T.V. and then come back in about 10 minutes and it should be done then try login in you shouldnt have any problems.... If this doesnt help for you then it might be something els but give this a try worked for me and a few of my guildies/friends..good luck

Edit... if your on the screen that shows your chars and when you click on a char and it says connecting for longer than a few seconds another thing you can do is go to the gw store when that loads up exit it and then try again that has also helped me when I was stuck at the char selction screen but liek I said above if its happenign at log in screen just let it upload the files first.

I'm having the same issue. It's not a firewall issue - I use AVG free and kaspersky, both of which ask before blocking if set as such. I even completely disabled them just to be sure. I played for a few minutes yesterday afternoon with no problems and only had the game get stuck at the update screen after the latest update. It's not my connection - I can play other online games just fine. I'm thinking the latest update haxored the connect screen.

This is not the first time (at least in Europe) that A-net has tried to host "events" on sub-par bandwidth/hardware.

I have no problems and most likely neither do you. Long "connecting... 0%" times - often followed by err7 or err5 is caused by Anet trying to do too much with too little... Dont spend a lot of time trying to debug their lack of investment/bad planning...

Exactly the same thing happening to me though I kinda found a fix for mine.

I have a 1mb NTL connection and it just stays at 'Connecting to Arenanet' trying to get an update, I tried disabling my firewall as so many other threads about this said and still nothing.

I also have a 512k Pipex line - and it works fine, it connected and downloaded the updates straight away.

Pipex works, NTL doesnt.
