I would start in Prophecies and play thru pre sear (I love that place)
Then I would either do missions all the way to LA or just run myself to LA.
And then head to Cantha to get max armor and such and play there for a bit before going back to Tyria.

The thing that bugs me about starting a character in Tyria is that i cannot get material storage until i reach lion's arch (travel to kaineng and back).

Used to be Tyria just for the free skills. Now that I've unlocked most of them, I see which one offers the best looking character of the profession I want.

Cantha is much faster at bringing up a new character, but consequently more expensive, since every skill bar about six needs to be bought at skill trainers. Prophecies takes a great deal longer, although it can be a bit faster now since you can pop over from LA and grab all the 3k exp fedex quests, although you might have a problem with the double damage bosses though.

If you want to play the pve game...Chapter 1 is your choice (You can just hop over at Lion's Arch to get the good quests in Kaineng Center that give 3-4k exp each, then hop back over)

Chapter 2 characters will go to lvl20 with both attribute quests in probably your first day of playing...This is better if you are just making the character to buy skills, or be PvP ready.

I like having more lvl 20 content. Everything before the desert in Prophecies is crap.

I don't like factions since the day i bought it, don't like the feeling to it unlike the original.. even though i got 3 lvl 20 canthan characters 1 in FOW armor and 95% explored of cantha ^^.

Why not just wait for Nightfall?

But, I think other people have it right:

Prophecy is longer, but in some ways, more fullfilling. More freedom to explore, less linear if you choose.

Factions is faster, and much easier to get Max weapons and armor. (Not to mention, you get nice Greens when you finish Factions). But it's very linear and forced.

Hopefully, Nightfall will combine the best elements from both.

I alternate between the two - but lately Prophecies has become a pain to do... it's waaay too slow and some areas have very few quests (like the jungle and the desert - obviously there are quite a few missions there though).

Factions is superior to Prophecies in every aspect of character development. The only thing people can come up with to say Prophecies is better is skills through quests (you can do at least 50% of those with a Canthan character), story/plot (neither are worth bothering with, so who gives a shit), and other relatively meaningless aspects.

It's up to the individual to decide which campaign is better suited to their taste, and that's greatly influenced by _why_ they're playing through the content.

i agree that you can make a fast level 20.

aside from that i think the fun factor of Factions is below the bottom of the barrel.

Prophecies for fun. I have fond memories of everything in it.

Factions for power leveling a PvE character. The content and storyline was very forgettable.

factions for those easily bored and who want to rise quickly to lvl 20 with both attribute quests.

prophecies is better if u prefer to do every side mission and enjoy the full game(and the free skills=D) and more suited for beginners than factions
mainly:
prophecies = PvE
factions = PvP

Prophecies was imo much better both pvp wise and pve wise. Factions wasn't bad, I just think it served better as an add-on to Prophecies rather than a stand alone like ANet advertises it as.

The PvE is far superior, the only reason I bought Factions was for the 12V12 and they screwed that up.

^ Yeah, that.

I was never too fond of PvP, but it's all a matter of preference. Prophecies has excellent lore, and is more about PvE than PvP. Factions is the opposite. The best choice? Get both. Though if you want to level a character faster, Factions is the way to go. Still, you can't beat the classic.

I like the storyline in Prophecies better as well, but really it feels drawn out when you've played 10 chars thru it to get to 20

Pre-sear, Ascalon, Northern Shiverpeaks, Kryta Province == noob island
jungle+desert = fed-ex quests around the marketplace, palace
Southern shiverpeaks, islands = main cantha missions/quests + one faction
which leaves the "optional" faction as an extra.

I don't like factions over prophecies, but it's a nice change I certainly wouldn't be playing if I was had been stuck with only Prophecies for all this time and I think that's true even a lot of the Factions "haters".

I enjoyed Prophecies more than Factions. I still have fond memories of Prophecies, but Factions is just a blur. I don't hate Factions, it's a good game and I've enjoyed it, but I just feel that I was more drawn in by the Prophecies storyline.

I just find myself being able to go back and have replayability in Prophecies much more than factions. I can take a char all the way through factions in less than a day capping all primary skills for the profession along the way. Once I am done with shiro, I need never touch it again, but I can go through areas of Prophecies many more times over and spend a nice leisurely week going through all of prophecies and doing the quests.

That's the other nice thing. Apart from the quests to get your 10k faction, there is no incentive (beyond huge xp to earn skill points) to do anything but primary quests.

Prophecies gave you skills with the quests and the quests, even when not primary, were more a part of the storyline than factions.

I am not a factions hater, I think it is a fun and challenging expansion, just kind of boring and too small.

Cantha, I like the looks better and perfer the accelerated pace and has more > lvl 20 content.

I perfer the greater xp gold rewards and choose the skills I want vs being spoonfeed specific paths and limiting you 2/3 of the game.

I'd create a Tyrian char, get ran to LA, Goto Cantha, Buy armor, do factions PvE (which is shorter) and hurray, I'm done

In fact, i already did that.

I like Factions more than Prophecies because Factions upgraded the game with many new systems.

However, with these benefits carrying over, I think that Prophecies became the superior game for its really cool and much longer storyline.

That's just me though.

imo

factions >>> prophecies

I enjoyed playing factions over and over with different characters, tyria was just darn boring. (and I know what I am talking about, got 3 characters born in tyria and 3 in cantha, all 6 have beaten both games)

It's just how you feel like playing the game. If you want to go through those boring pre lvl 20 content, prophecies is the place to be.

For shear looks, Tyria. Hands down, no debate necessary.

For play...depends. I like the linearity of the Tyria missions, but the "brevity" of the Canthan. It can take 45 minutes to smoke a mission like Aura Glade, and 20 minutes for a comprable Canthan mission. The flip side of that is that even though Factions is far from old, alot of the mission cities are BARREN of people, much less people with a clue. The're all 10 sheets to the wind. So many choices.

For Hench, Cantha. Hands down, no debate necessary.

If I could, I would wish for a a land as vast and "mission linear" as Tyria, but with missions as fun/short as Cantha. I just hate in Cantha how you have to go back and forth to the same old places to do primary missions to progess the game, rather than the co-op missions.
