I've been looking back lately and realizing that there are a lot of items that were given away early in the game that I overlooked at the time and now realize have some unique value. I thought it might be nice to compile a list of items new players/characters may come across that are worth keeping. What follows is a compilation of what others who have posted here and I have found useful that are obtainable early in the game:
Prophecies:
Presearing:
Starter Armor:
Since it has the minimum armor level, this armor works well with protective spirit/spirit bond farm builds (http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Mo/any_Spirit_Bonder)
Poor Tenant:
http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Poor_Tenant
This quest gives a -20 health divine symbol that is often used by 55 monks (http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/55_Monk) when they get death penalty. While this item is handy, it generally has little to no monetary value compared to the -50 health item that usually sells for around 5k.
The Prize Moa Bird:
http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/The_Prize_Moa_Bird
The sword given offers +5 armor while casting, halves cast time of spells 5% and gives +5 unconditional armor. Good for melee style casters.
Dyes:
Often new players are fooled into selling black and silver dyes for low prices in presearing since there is no dye trader to base the price off of. While most dyes sell at the trader for about 100-250g, silvers can sell for around 900g and black dyes can sell for 9-10k at the trader, depending on price fluctuations.
Post Searing:
Fire Wand from collector Wain Hughes:
http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Wain_Hughes
for 5 charr carvings, you can get a fire wand with a +5 unconditional mod at a collector just outside Nolani Academy. This holds the same advantage of using a +5 energy melee weapon, except you cannot mod it, but it is still a much less expensive alternative.
Cities of Ascalon Quest:
http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Cities_of_Ascalon
-50 health cesta that is given is generally worth about 5k and is used in the 55 monk build (http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/55_Monk)
-energy stone scroll that is given is used in monk builds in PvE to hide energy and counter energy drain mesmers
Fires in the East:
http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Fires_in_the_East
The Inscribed Staff can be modded with a +5 energy insightful mod to give the wielder +18 energy when health is above 80%. This is useful for trapper rangers who want as much energy available as possible.
Blankets for the Settlers:
http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Blankets_for_the_Settlers
The longbow given in this quest reduces physical damage by 2 while in stance.
Factions:
Starter Armor:
This armor is just like Presearing Starter Armor in that it can be useful for people using Spirit Bond farming builds.
Naga Pelts:
These should be saved in order to be exchanged for Plague Remedies that are used in the Naga Oil quest
http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Naga_Oil
Feel free to add anything I missed.
Items new players should keep as they progress...

Well personally I would suggest keeping the sword you get from doing the quest The Prize Moa Bird - it looks like a Crystalline.
http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/The_Prize_Moa_Bird
It obviously have terrible damage but an inherent +5 armor, I use it for my melemancer and have modded it to a Icy Long Sword of Defense (use it for spinal shivers), these are the stats
Icy Long Sword of Defense
Cold damage: 6-9
Armor +5 (while casting)
Halves casting time of spells (Chance: 5%)
Armor +5

The Blankets for the Settlers Longbow. Has dmg -2 in stance and another mod. Used in Solo Ranger FoW Forest farming.
I also like to keep the early rewards with different skins that are rare in post sear. There is a pre sear sword with the cyrstalline skin and a axe with the dwarven axe skin that I think you get from the Helping the Dwarves quest. I use them for IW builds.

Black and Silver dyes - this is a no brainer for most but there are a lot of new players that have no idea of the value of them due to merchants only offering 1-2g for them when they are worth butt loads more
No Req Weapons - usfull for many non-typical caster and solo builds for their secondary mods and having no req allows them to use their dmg

Another unusual quest item is a Poisonous LongBow from a Quest in the Jungle. It has a Dead Bow skin and stats as follows:
14-26 Req 8 Marksmanship
Lengthens Poison Duration 33%
Reduces Poison duration on you by 20%
I guess you could throw a grip of your choice on this and have a decent poisoner bow.

The quest "The Hunter's Horn" has a decent Longbow for pulling (with any non-ranger class) in Pre.
Stats:
7-10 damage (no req.)
Health +10
15^50

Maybe the Fiery Flame Spitter or the +5 Energy Wands if you ever get the collector's items
