Nightfall without factions?
slyde
Hi guys,
I recently got back into GW and have been slowly levelling mostly solo (as an aside, i am level 14 now, and looking for a good, active pvp guild where i can meet some friends).
I have not bought factions yet, because quite honestly i havent heard much about it that sounds like it would enhance my play experience.
Keep in mind my MMO playstyle has always been to just create one character and make it the best it can be. In all the MMO's i have played (and ive played alot), i have never made a second character. Doing the same quests and grind over again in the same game just has never appealed to me, so although the new classes sound cool, i probably wont play them.
But some stuff on nightfall sounds cool.
So my question: If i skipped factions for now, and just bought nightfall, would i be missing out on anything, and if so, what?
thanks!

Not really. Factions was rather short.

i am PVE only and got little out of Factions but am drooling over Nightfall.
skip Factions now as you can always add it later if you want

Both chapters have their strong and weak spots. Factions seems to be shorter, but that doesnt mean it cant be enjoyable. Factions also has some useful skills/spells not found in Prophecies, so when you skip faction you will be missing that.
I agree that doing the same quests over and over again isnt very appealing, but when you have all 3 chapters it will be easier to switch when you are bored with chapter X.

There are some nice skills available in factions, some cool armors and some of the missions are fun.
Read up on all it has to offer and decide if it's for you.

For me the top 5 reasons for buying factions are:
New skills
New armor*
New weapons
New story
Something to do after finishing most of Prophecies 5 times
Top 5 things I saw as detractions from the game as a franchise:
Inability to run from area to area without finishing specific quests (gates)
The game, by comparison to Prophecies, is short...even with the gates
Inherent problems with some faction battle areas (lack of interest/leechers)
Meaningless non-story driven FedEx quests seem more prevelent
Maze-like maps with too many dead-ends in the city gets old quick...(makes you REALLY appreciate getting out of it.
*addendum: wish someone would come up with truely unique, and sleek/cool looking ranger armor that took black dye better...
That's only one player's perspective, though...some really love it, some really hate it...I am glad I bought it, even if it lacks some of the charm and wonder of Prophecies.

If you ever wish to form a guild, Alliances will be off limits without Factions. I doubt the trick of getting someone with access to Cantha to do it will work either

thanks for the comments guys.. i will probably lay off factions for now and go right to nightfall..

I'm actually in the same situation, except that I just started Prophecies last week. I'm thought about skipping factions as well as I'm into PvE more than PvP. This thread definitely helped

I personally like Factions
A. You can level characters very fast if you want to
B. It does not take you very long to make some money. You break the 1k mark much faster many quests that give gold
C. Extra storage for materials!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
D. Some of the quests are very challenging
E. Dual Group Missions (2 missions with 8 players on each side) Some people hate them but if you get good groups they are fun.
F. 15k Armor is pretty cool
G. Chest runs all over the place
H. Celestial skills for last two areas
I. With the right group you can finish the final mission in less then a minute.
J. You are rewarded for completing the game
K. Some repeatable quests if you wish to do them over and over (They earn faction points)
L. Challenge Missions area in PVE
M. Elite Skill Flesh Golem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
N. Ranger pets Tigers, White Tigers, Crabs, Moa Birds, Phoenix
O. Did I mention Flesh Golem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P. Some cool new weapon skills
Q. Did I mention Flesh Golem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In my opinion, you can't make your monk the best it could be without factions. You are missing quite a few skills which add to the array of options you have for your character.
Factions also allows you to get quite a few skill points quicker, which means you can expand your skill list even more. But overall, I didn't get into Factions as much as I think I will get into Nightfall.

I actually thought that Factions had a cooler storyline, and I like the general feel of the game a lot more than Prophecies. It has a sleeker look to it.
Anytime I have been playing in Cantha for awhile and I go back to Tyria, it feels like I've hopped a ship straight into the ghetto and I don't have hydrolics...
There are no annoying dwarves trying to hack at your knees in Factions. A huge plus for me. I probably wouldn't mind the dwarves so much if you had the option to play one, but as is, they piss me off.
IMO the 15k armors of Cantha are vastly superior to those in Tyria.
You can weild a katana (though you do so with one had and a shield, which I'll never get used to).
Alliance battles. Very unique compared to other content.
A vast amount of skills that are required to make many of the most superior builds. And some that are just plain fun.
You can become closer to the stars... oooooooooh.
No Liches.
No White Mantel.
No Gwen.
No Ice Golems.
No icy places.
No firey places.
No dessert.
No Rurik.
But yeah I agree, skip it and go straight to NF if you are inclined to do so.
